Mechanism of the Ne-22 (d, Li-6) O-18 reaction

1984

As part of a systematic study, the (d,Li6) reaction has been measured at a bombarding energy of 80 MeV on Ne22. Angular distributions were obtained in an angular range of 8° to 35° (lab). In the framework of finite-range distorted-wave Born approximation calculations, alpha spectroscopic factors were extracted. The strong collectivity of the low-lying states suggests the necessity of employing a coupled reaction channels formalism in the analysis. Indeed spectroscopic information arising from one-channel distorted-wave Born approximation calculations reveals significant differences between experimental and theoretical results. Furthermore, the shapes of some experimental angular distributio…

Charge-Induced Deformation of the 4He Solid-Superfluid Interface

1984

The interface between solid and superfluid 4He has revealed unusual dynamic properties. Characteristic of this quantum system are the very high thermal conductivity of the superfluid phase, and an extremely small heat of fusion below temperatures of about 1 K. As a result, equilibrium at the solid-superfluid 4He interface is established quite rapidly, which gives rise, e.g., to melting — crystallization waves [1,2] — similar in appearance to surface waves on a free liquid surface — and to anomalous transmission of sound [3].

Towards a Neofunctionalist Theory of Psychology?

1984

The contemporary study of human activity comprises various levels of description. Three levels are distinguished for the purpose of the present paper: (1) single acts and interaction episodes; (2) individual activity structures; (3) life process. Regardless of the level of analysis the theoretical models correspond to each other. Activity is examined in relation to goals and conditions which include both situational and environmental inputs. It is suggested that different types of explanations are fruitful for each aspect of activity, but they do not exclude each other. The action-oriented approach represents a continuation to the functionalist tradition while emphasizing intentional activi…

Evidence for Impaired Hepatic Vitamin K1 Metabolism in Patients Treated with N-Methyl-Thiotetrazole Cephalosporins

1984

SummaryIn 8 patients on no oral intake and with parenteral alimentation, administration of cephalosporins with N-methyl-thiotetrazole side chain (moxalactam, cefamandole), was associated with prolongation of prothrombin time, appearance in the circulation of descarboxy-prothrombin (counter immunoelectrophoresis and echis carinatus assay) and diminution of protein C. Acute administration of 10 mg vitamin Ki was followed by the transient appearance of vitamin K1 2,3-epoxide, indicating an impaired hepatocellular regeneration of vitamin K1 from the epoxide. Impaired hepatic vitamin K1 metabolism, tentatively ascribed to the N-methyl-thiotetrazole group, is one (but possibly not the only) cause…

Una nueva inscripción latina de Bejís

1984

The Influence of Brassinosteroid, a Growth-promoting Steroidal Lactone, on Development and CO2-fixation Capacity of Intact Wheat and Mustard Seedlings

1984

In 1970, Mitchell et al. isolated a lipoidal complex from the pollen of rape (Brassica napus L.). This complex, called “Brassins” was found to have partly powerful growth-promoting properties. The novel growth response of young bean plants in the second internode assay (Worley, Mitchell 1971; Mitchell, Gregory 1972) and other physiological changes following Brassin-treatment have been studied under several aspects (Krizek, Worley 1981; Gregory 1981).

Frequency-Analysis of Precursors of Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes in Radiation Chimeras: Enumeration of Antigenspecific CTL-P Restricted to Thymic MHC- and…

1984

The mechanisms controlling the acquisition of T cell restriction specificity and immunocompetence are, despite of numerous investigations, not well understood. From studies of the CTL-immune responsiveness in thymus- and bone marrow-grafted chimeric mice, it became apparent, that it is the thymus which is crucial not only for the maturation or T cells, but also for the specificity repertoire of the T cells (1,2). From these data it was suggested, that during intra-thymic maturation both mutational events and positive selection mechanisms influence the repertoire such that only T cells restricted to thymic epithelial cell MHC determinants mature and will be exported to the peripheral lymphoi…

Sprachlenkung oder Sprachpflege? Zur Situation der germanistischen Sprachpflege heute

1984

SUMMARY Directing a Language or Cultivating It? On German Language Cultivation Today The cultivation of the German language outside Germany is, as is well known, the task of the Goethe Institute. But how is German cultivated at home, that is, within the German-language area? Indeed, is there any need to cultivate a language internally, "intralingually"? And if so, how can language cultivation be organized? In Germany there is no institution corresponding to the Académie française. Finally we may ask the basic question as to the meaning of "language cultivation." What is it? Cultivation of the German language within the large, self-contained community of people whose native language it is? T…

The rheological behaviour of HDPE/LDPE blends. II. Die swell and normal stresses

1984

Die swell data are presented for different high-density/low-density polyethylene blends. The data relating to samples with frozen-in stresses are represented, collected as a function of the usual operational parameters (L/D ratio, flow rate, temperature). Data obtained with annealed samples are used to derive, through a theoretical approach, normal stresses. The glucose-dependent transport of L-malate in Zygosaccharomyces bailii.

1984

Zygosaccharomyces bailii possesses a constitutive malic enzyme, but only small amounts of malate are decomposed when the cells ferment fructose. Cells growing anaerobically on glucose (glucose cells) decompose malate, whereas fructose cells do not. Only glucose cells show an increase in the intracellular concentration of malate when suspended in a malate-containing solution. The transport system for malate is induced by glucose, but it is repressed by fructose. The synthesis of this transport system is inhibited by cycloheximide. Of the two enantiomers L-malate is transported preferentially. The transport of malate by induced cells is not only inhibited by addition of fructose but also inac…

Crystal and molecular structures of hexaaquazinc(II)isonicotinate n-oxide and catena-diaquabis-μ-(isonicotinato n-oxide)cadmium(II)

1984

Abstract [Zn(H2O)6](N-inicO)2 is an ionic compound made up of hexaaqua metal cations and isonicotinate N-oxide anions. It forms an isomorphic series with the corresponding Mg2+, Fe2+, Co2+ and Ni2+ compounds. In [Cd(N-inicO)2(H2O)2]n complex, coordination takes place through the NO oxygen and one of the (COO) oxygens with ligand forming thus a double bridge between Cd2+ ions. The structure is an endless chain stretching diagonally through the unit cell. The coordination polyhedron in both compounds is almost undistorted octahedron.

Polymeric Monolayers and Liposomes as Models for Biomembranes and Cells

1984

Conventional model membrane systems based on natural lipids usually lack long term stability. Polymer chemistry can help to overcome this disadvantage introducing polymerizable lipids into these systems. Polymerizable lipids used are diacetylenes, butadienes, acrylates or lipids which can undergo polycondensation.

Thermotropic polyesters with mesogenic groups based on substituted hydroquinone units and highly flexible siloxan spacer in the main chain

1984

New thermotropic Polyesters having mesogenic groups based on substituted hydroquinone units and highly flexible oligosiloxan spacer in the main chain, are synthesized and characterized. The mesophase formed at low temperature are studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized light microscopy. The liquid crystalline behaviour of these polyesters, particulary their transition temperatures and the mesophase width could be explained on the basis of their structural features.

Microelectrode Measurements of Oxygen Tension Distributions in Multicellular Spheroids Cultured in Spinner Flasks

1984

Since multicellular spheroids were introduced into cancer research by Sutherland et al. (1970, 1971), they have been widely used for studying the susceptibility of cancer cells to various treatment modalities. Many of these investigations provided evidence for a major role of oxygen in controlling the metabolic and cell cycle state of the tumor cells, thus modifying the responsiveness of the cells to therapy. Several investigators have measured O2 tension (PO2) distributions in spheroids with O2-sensitive microelectrodes (Carlsson et al. 1979; Kaufman et al. 1981; Mueller-Klieser and Sutherland 1982a, b, 1983; Mueller-Klieser et al. 1983). The measurements produced PO2 values that varied co…

A Singular Multi-Grid Iteration Method for Bifurcation Problems

1984

We propose an efficient technique for the numerical computation of bifurcating branches of solutions of large sparse systems of nonlinear, parameter-dependent equations. The algorithm consists of a nested iteration procedure employing a multi-grid method for singular problems. The basic iteration scheme is related to the Lyapounov-Schmidt method and is widely used for proving the existence of bifurcating solutions. We present numerical examples which confirm the efficiency of the algorithm.

Narratividad clásica y poética de la modernidad

1984
