Tumor Blood Flow and O2 Availability during Hemodilution

1984

An insufficient and heterogeneously distributed nutritive blood flow leads to an inadequate and nonuniform supply of O2 and substrates in many solid tumors (Vaupel, 1977, 1979, 1982). This deterioration of the supply conditions, which already occurs in very early growth stages and which is superimposed by a deterioration of diffusive transport during advanced growth stages, is paralleled by a decrease in the therapeutic efficacy of various cancer treatment modalities such as irradiation and chemotherapy with antiproliferative drugs. In the case of anticancer drugs, the efficiency may be reduced by affecting both pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. In the latter case this is due to the de…

Abnormal Haemostasis and Blood Viscosity in Malignant Hypertension

1984

SummaryWe have previously shown abnormalities of haemostasis suggestive of intravascular coagulation in patients with malignant hypertension, a condition associated with retinopathy and renal fibrin deposition. To determine whether such abnormalities are specific to malignant hypertension, we have measured several haemostatic and haemorheological variables in 18 patients with malignant hypertension (Group 1), 18 matched healthy controls (Group 2), and 18 patients with non-malignant hypertension (Group 3) matched for renal pathology, blood pressure and serum creatinine with Group 1. Both Groups 1 and 3 had increased mean levels of fibrinogen, factor VIIIc, beta-thrombo- globulin, plasma visc…

Zur Kristallchemie der Urate

1984

Interrelations between globus pallidus and hippocampal epilepsy in the cat (1)

1984

AbstractElectrically induced afterdischarge (ADs) were evoked in the cats' dorsal hippocampus. The action of the conditioning prestimulation of the pallidus nucleus on AD duration was studied. A significant facilitatory influence was observed when pallidal conditioning stimulation immediately preceded hippocampal test stimulation. The time course of the phenomenon showed a decrease of the conditioning action when the interval between the two stimulations increased: complete disappearance of the effect occurred after about 800 ms. Results are discussed as far as functional relationships between basal ganglia and rhinencephalic system are concerned.

Zur Temperaturabhängigkeit polarographischer Ströme

1984

Perpetual proliferation of LYT-1 cells requires repetitive signals for IL-2 receptor induction by antigen-presenting cells.

1984

Abstract T cell lines with specificity for bovine insulin and ovalbumin were maintained by serial stimulation with antigen presented on irradiated syngeneic spleen cells, alternating 3 days later with subculture in IL-2 containing medium (CM). When the cultures were repetitively split in CM, with concomitant dilution of antigen-presenting cells, a gradual loss of proliferative capacity of the cells in the presence of CM was observed. Absorption studies revealed a 20-fold reduction of IL-2 receptors on the surface of T blasts assayed 12 days after antigenic stimulation as compared with day 5 blasts. This decrement in the number of IL-2 acceptor sites reflected an actual decrease in cell surf…

Effectiveness of Respiratory Hyperoxia, of Normobaric and of Hyperbaric Oxygen Atmospheres in Improving Tumor Oxygenation

1984

A restriction and an inhomogeneous distribution of diffusive and convective oxygen supply is considered the main cause for pronounced radioresistance in solid tumors (Thomlinson and Gray, 1955; Tannock, 1972). One way to alleviate this crucial problem in tumor therapy is the direct enhancement of oxygen delivery to the cancer cells. This can be performed either by the tumor host breathing pure O2 (respiratory hyperoxia, RHO) or by whole body exposure to pure O2 atmospheres at normobaric or hyperbaric pressures (normobaric oxygenation NMO, and hyperbaric oxygenation, HPO, respectively). Numerous investigations have been undertaken both in animals and in man using RHO, NMO, or HPO as an adjuv…

Ornithophily on the Canary Islands

1984

(1) On the Canary Islands and Madeira typical bird-flowers occur in at least twelve species of six genera, although true flower-birds are absent. This inconsistency is in part elucidated by field observations on exotic and wild plants of Tenerife. —(2) In the Botanical Garden of Orotava it could be observed that various ornithophilous plants, which were introduced there, were visited by indigenous birds for nectar and in one case (Orthostemon) for food tissue. Of the three bird species involved, an endemic race of Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita) and resident Blackcaps (Sylvia atricapilla) exploit, and pollinate, flowers legitimously, while the Wild Canary (Serinus canaria) is predominan…

Investigations of Superheavy Quasiatoms via Spectroscopy of δ Rays and Positrons

1984

There exists a long-standing and very interesting problem in atomic physics, namely, the question: What is the binding energy of an electron if the strength of the Coulomb potential exceeds Zα = 1? According to the Dirac-Sommerfeld fine-structure formula for a point charge $$E = {m_e}{c^2}{[1 - {(Z\alpha )^2}]^{1/2}}$$ (1) the total energy of the lowest bound Is-state becomes imaginary for Zα > 1. But even as early as 1945 it was realized(59) that this property of Eq. (1) is caused by the singularity of the Coulomb potential at the origin. Assuming a realistic charge distribution of the nucleus there is no restriction suc as Zα < 1 for the binding energy. Recent calculations show (cf., e.g.…

Functional Analysis of Alloreactive Helper T Cells Involved in the Induction of Cytolytic T Cell Responses In Vitro

1984

When T-responder cells are sensitized in vitro to foreign antigen presented on syngeneic cells or towards allogeneic stimulator cells, a proliferative response is initiated in which antigen specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) are generated. The induction of CTL, however, requires the collaboration between functionally distinct T cell subpopulations1–5 and accessory cells from the macrophage lineage, including dendritic cells. The experimental data accumulated so far reveal a cascade of T-T cell interactions and distinct functions of their soluble products resulting in the “Interleukin concept”6 (Fig. 1). Upon receptor-antigen interaction, the “antigen-selected” clones of CTLp become sens…

Trapped Ion Spectroscopy

1984

A single particle, at rest in free space, free of uncontrolled perturbations and at hand for infinitely long times would be the ideal subject for spectroscopic investigations. If the techniques for the preparation of such a particle are available, it becomes feasible to orient the system by a variety of reactions with photons, atoms, and electrons. Line broadening due to Doppler and observation time effects would be minimized.

Electrodermal habituation speed and visual monitoring performance.

1984

Previous research has suggested that speed of habituation of the electrodermal orienting response is related to auditory vigilance performance. The present study investigated the relationship between habituation speed, nonspecific response frequency, and detection performance in a complex visual monitoring task. Two levels of task difficulty were employed. In the visual monitoring task, correct detections declined across blocks, and fewer signals were detected in the difficult task condition. Slow habituators detected more signals than fast habituators, but NSR-frequency was not significantly related to the number of correct detections. The implications of these findings for different model…

Gas—liquid chromatographic analyses

1984

Abstract The gas chromatography (GC) of n -alkyl acetates (CH 3 COOR), chloroacetates (CH 2 ClCOOR), dichloroacetates (CHCl 2 COOR) and trichloroacetates (CCl 3 COOR), where the alcohol chain length (R) varied between 1 and 8, and certain of their monochlorinated derivatives, 176 compounds altogether, has been studied on SE-30 and OV-351 glass capillary columns under the same operating conditions. The isomeric monochlorinated esters are eluted in direct order from the 1- chloro to the ω-chloro isomer, the separation of the isomers being complete on OV- 351. On SE-30, however, the peaks of the 6- and 7-chlorooctyl esters are partly overlapped. The separation of the mixtures of odd- and e…
