The kinetics of the bromination of six differently substituted 2,6-bis(hydroxybenzyl)phenols having only one reactivepara position at the phenolic unit in the middle of the molecule were studied in acetic acid at 22°C. The reaction rate decreases if intramolecular hydrogen bonds between one or two hydroxy groups of the adjacent phenolic units and the hydroxy group of the reacting unit become possible, and it is especially low, if these hydrogen bonds are directed to the middle by bulky substituents inortho position. Small angle neutron scattering on periodically deformed polymers

Small angle neutron scattering from periodically deformed samples is a useful extension of the methods presently available for the study of molecular dynamics of polymers. In this paper we describe apparatus that has been used to produce large cyclic deformations at frequencies upto 10 Hz and the principles by which data is collected to give spectra corresponding to different states of strain of the sample. Some data on model polydimethylsiloxane networks is given as an illustration of the value of this technique.

El objetivo de esta nota es informar brevemente acerca del estudio sedimentológico efectuado en los cortes de la excavación arqueológica practicada en la partida de Benivaire (Carcaixent) durante el verano de 1982. Dentro de la secuencia estratigráfica ofrece especial interés el desarrollo de un potente suelo hidromorfo sobre los niveles romano- imperiales. La situación de estos cortes dentro del ámbito sedimentario del llano de inundación del Xúquer, así como la serie de trabajos realizados en el mismo, aconseja la publicación de estas notas, que pueden aportar algunos datos de interés complementario.

The concept of the photosynthetic unit (PSIT) was introduced by Gaffron and Wohl (1936) on the basis of Emerson and Arnold’s flash light experiments (1932). The PSU was defined as the minimum of chlorophyll molecules required for the evolution of one O2. Later on, the PSU was considered to be the complex of one reaction center and its appropriate antenna of light harvesting chlorophyll molecules. Assuming that there is an equal number of the PS I and PS II reaction centers the PSU was mostly expressed as Chl/P-700. Mechanisms for the Dynamics of Phase Transformations

An introductory review of the dynamics of (first- order) phase transitions is given. Concepts describing the initial stages of the transition, such as nucleation, spinodal decomposition (in the case of unmixing) are introduced, and their validity is critically discussed. The theoretical results are compared to recent computer simulations and pertinent experiments. Then the scaling concepts describing the late stages of domain growth are discussed, and open problems are outlined.

A limiting dilution culture system based on stimulation with concanavalin A (Con A) has been used to study the quantitative distribution of helper and of cytotoxic precursor cells in Lyt-2-defined subpopulations of murine T cells. Virtually all of the selected Lyt-2+ and Lyt-2-T cells grow and expand to large clonal colonies within an 8-9-day culture period. Our data show that upon stimulation with Con A, 90% of the Lyt-2-T cells were capable to produce interleukin 2 (IL 2) activity. In addition, IL 2 activity is produced by 8-10% of Lyt-2+ T cells. Male NMRI-mice were subjected to exhaustive treadmill exercise. 3 and 6 days after the exertion, quadriceps femoris muscles were examined histologically and analyzed for acid hydrolases in order to follow the degree and progress of injuries. Prednisolone (PRED), an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid, was given to some of the animals in order to modify the exercise response. The paper deals with the influence of the epicentral direction on the displacement and stress response of multistorey asymmetric buildings to earthquake horizontal ground motion. A method is given for computing for each plane frame of the complex structure a particular direction of the bidirectional stationary random input for which the horizontal floor displacement of the given frame is maximized. It is shown that this direction can be considered conservative for the corresponding non-stationary process.
