The Au, Pt and Pd contents of the sediments of Ginsheimer‐Altrhine River, a channel of the Rhine river which drains one of the most industrialized regions of western Europe, have been determined by flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The abundances of these noble metals range from 96–460 ppb Au; 734 ppb‐31 ppm Pt and 32 ppb‐4 ppm Pd. The extremely high concentrations, particulary those of Pt and Pd, are attributed to their use in industry and are due to the formation and concentration of metal‐organic complexes, mainly at the interface between an extremely reducing and an oxidizing aquatic environment. Since arterial hypocapnia causes a cerebral blood flow decrease, hypocapnic conditions are induced in patients with severe traumatic brain injury by controlled hyperventilation in order to reduce the intracranial pressure (Gordon, 1971). Beneficial effects on the clinical course of patients, however, can be observed only under conditions of moderate hypocapnia. As shown by animal experiments severe arterial hypocapnia results in insufficient oxygen supply conditions in brain tissue (Grote et al., 1981), which subsequently influences the brain metabolism (Granholm et al., 1969, 1971) and counteracts the influence of hypocapnia on cerebral blood flow regulation (Grote et al., 1981). Abstract The gas chromatographic retention behaviour of the propanoyl and monochloropropanoyl esters of saturated C3C5 branched-chain and unsaturated C3C6 alcohols on SE-30 and OV-351 capillary columns at several temperatures is reported. Retention index increments at 80 and 120°C show the effect of branching in the alkyl chain and also the effect of unsaturation and of its position in the chain with chlorination at the two possible positions in the acyl chain. The various incremental effects are discussed and compared with the behaviour of the corresponding n-alkyl esters.

Anisotropic muon Knight shift in the HCP single crystals of Cd, Zn and Be

In single crystal samples of Zn, Cd and Be (hcp structure) stroboscopicμSR measurements successfully revealed anisotropies in the muon Knight shift (Kμ). An anisotropic Kμ can provide information on the amount of non s-electrons screening the charge of the muon implanted in these metals as a light hydrogen isotope. In Cd, the anisotropic part depends strongly on the temperature and shows a change in sign at roughly 110 K. In Zn, the anisotropic part below 10 K turns out to comprise 4th order contributions in the direction cosines of the external field. This can be understood on the basis of an anisotropicg-factor of the conduction electrons or spin-orbit coupling, respectively.

Spontaneous Endoreduplication, Tetraploidy and Chromosome Breakage in Lymphocyte Cultures from Healthy Subjects

SUMMARY42,703 metaphases of peripheral lymphocytes from 20 healthy subjects (10 women and 10 men) were examined in order to establish the frequency of endoreduplicated cells and of tetraploid cells without diplochromosomes. Frequencies were found to be 0.016% and 0.112%, respectively. The two sexes did not differ as to the frequency of tetraploid cells, with and without diplochromosomes (about 0.13% in either sex). In a total of 2,135 well spread metaphases examined, 26 cells (i.e. 1.2%) with chromosomal breaks were found. Again, no significant differences between the two sexes were found as to such chromosome abnormalities.

Three experiments were designed to study the lysosomal changes associated with the development and maintenance of the endurance training induced resistance against exercise injuries in mouse skeletal muscles. The activities of arylsulphatase, cathepsin C, cathepsin D, and beta-glucuronidase were assayed from the red part of mouse quadriceps femoris muscle 4 days after prolonged strenuous running of 4-9 h duration. Exercise injuries were characterized by necrotic fibers and focal inflammation. Strenuous running of untrained mice induced necrotic lesions and a 4-5 fold increase in the activities of lysosomal enzymes. Nach A.C. Guyton ist das Kennzeichen der renalen Hypertonie ein, im Rahmen der Regulationsstorung erhohtes Herzzeitvolumen. Diese Hypothese, am sog. Guytonschen Modell gezeigt, konnte weder an Ratten, die einen durch DOCA bzw. einen durch NaCl-reiche Diat induzierten renalen Hochdruck aufwiesen, noch an Kontrolltieren nachgewiesen werden. Daher wurde ein mathematisches Modell zur Simulation der Hypertonie entwickelt als Sonderfall das Guytonsche Modell enthalt. Mit diesem Modell kann das hamodynamische Verhalten bei Hypertonie eindeutig nachgebildet und die Signifikanz beteiligter Mechanismen untersucht werden.

The repetitive ventricular response (RVR) to three stimulation techniques (bipolar, cathodal and anodal) was investigated in 35 patients. 26 patients suffered from coronary heart disease and 9 patients from dilative cardiomyopathy. The stimulation study was performed at a ventricular driving rate of 120/min with one and two premature ventricular extrastimuli.
