Quenched and annealed free energies
1984
This paper gives a simple exposition of the Nishimori method to solve certain quenched, random bond spin-glass models. It allows a transparent physical interpretation in terms of annealed systems. As an application a special solution of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model with a discrete probability distribution is obtained and shown to agree with the solution for the Gaussian case. This substantiates the claim that the averaged free energy does not depend on the details of the probability distribution Expose simple de la methode de Nishimori pour resoudre certains modeles de verres de spin avec interactions aleatoires. Effect of Localized Hyperthermia on Tumor Blood Flow and Oxygenation
1984
Hyperthermia has been shown to have a lethal effect in tumor cell cultures, particularly at temperatures above 42°C.1 Moreover, it has been demonstrated that hyperthermia retards the growth rate of certain types of malignant tumors and can be effective in completely eradicating some tumors without any major damage to normal tissue.2,3,4 The differential response of solid tumors in vivo to heat treatment in comparison to normal tissue probably results from several factors. Among these the in vivo micro-environment seems to play a decisive role. In general, the interstitial milieu of solid tumors is characterized by tissue hypoxia and anoxia5,6 and by severe tissue acidosis.7 These unfavorabl…
Tissue Polypeptide Antigen in Patients with Breast Cancer and Gynecological Cancer
1984
Abstract The serum concentrations of TPA were determined in 67 patients with primary breast cancer, in 70 patients with metastasizing breast carcinoma and in 20 patients with ovarian cancer of stages III and IV (FIGO). Elevated TPA levels (>85 U/L) were found in 54% of patients with primary breast cancer, in 81% of the cases with disseminated disease and in 86% of patients with an ovarian carcinoma stage III. Preoperative TPA values in patients with primary mammary cancer were found to correlate well with tumor size and axillary lymph node involvement. Perioperative course controls in 10 patients exhibited an increase of TPA serum levels. The observation of the patients with metastasizing b…

Mean field methods in large amplitude nuclear collective motion
1984
The time dependent Hartree-Fock method (TDHF) is reviewed and its success and failure are discussed. It is demonstrated that TDHF is a semiclassical theory which is basically able to describe the time evolution of one-body operators, the energy loss in inclusive deep inelastic collisions, and fusion reactions above the Coulomb barrier. For genuine quantum mechanical processes as e.g. spontaneous fission, subbarrier fusion, phase shifts and the description of bound vibrations, the quantized adiabatic time dependent Hartree-Fock theory (quantized ATDHF) is suggested and reviewed. Realistic three-dimensional calculations for heavy ion systems of A1+A2<32 are presented. Applications to various …
Measurement of the Lifetime of Neutral Charmed Mesons
1984
Abstract The lifetime of neutral charmed particles photoproduced in emulsion has been measured. The lifetime value presented here was obtained from a sample of 22D 0 mesons, 18 of which have their charmed partner seen in emulsion. The sample is essentially background-free. The result obtained is τ D 0 =(2.11 +1.21 -0.63 )×10 13 s The D 0 mass derived from 8 3C events is m D 0 = 1856 ± 36 MeV/ c 2 .
Autoinhibition of noradrenaline release from the rat heart as a function of the biophase concentration. Effects of exogenous alpha-adrenoceptor agoni…
1984
1. Rat isolated perfused hearts with the right sympathetic nerves intact were loaded with 3H-(-)-noradrenaline. The nerves were stimulated with trains of 180 pulses at 3 Hz and at 10 min intervals. The overflow of 3H-noradrenaline and 3H-metabolites was determined by liquid scintillation spectrometry. 2. Clonidine (IC50 17 nM), oxymetazoline (IC50 63 nM), and α-methylnoradrenaline (apparent IC50 35 nM, determined in the presence of cocaine and propranolol) decreased the stimulation-evoked overflow of 3H-noradrenaline by 26, 49, and 78%, respectively, but not methoxamine up to 100 μM (propranolol present). Oxymetazoline and α-methyl-noradrenaline did not cause desensitization of the presynap…
Reproducibility of aerobic and anaerobic thresholds in 20-50 year old men.
1984
The reproducibility of the aerobic (AerT) and the anaerobic (AnT) threshold was studied in 33 men aged 20–50 years. They completed two maximal exercise tests on a bicycle ergometer. The thresholds, as $$\dot V_{O_2 }$$ (l·min−1), were determined visually by two investigators using both the blood lactate and the respiratory indices. The respiratory variables were measured with a computerized breath-by-breath method; samples of venous blood were drawn every 2nd min and analysed enzymatically for lactate. The reproducibility of the AerT (r=0.94) and of the AnT (r=0.96) were equally good. The AnT can be determined either from blood lactate concentrations (AnTLa) or from ventilatory and gas exch…
Charged charmed particle lifetime
1984
Abstract We present the lifetime values obtained for D ± and Λ c + , photoproduced in nuclear emulsion in the WA58 experiment. In photohadronic interactions, pairs of charmed particles are produced. Out of 20 charged charmed particles used for lifetime evaluation, 17 have their charmed partner seen emulsion, being then essentially free from any background. The values of the lifetime are τ D ± = (3.91 −1.25 +2.35 ) × 10 −13 s, τ Λ c + = (2.22 −0.75 +1.34 ) × 10 −13 s.
Correlative Analysis of the Photosynthetic Capacity and Different Components of the Photosynthetic Apparatus
1984
The majority of higher plants is able to adapt to the ecological factor light in a wide range. Depending on the light intensity and the light quality during growth, plant with an equal genotype develop into so-called low light and high light forms. The photosynthetic adaptation to different light conditions involves complex, balanced changes of many leaf features. The changes of physiological factors of photosynthesis includes differences in the CO2 conductance, in the Calvin cycle enzymes, the capacity of electron transport, the photophosphorylation and the pigments (Boardman, 1977; Wild, 1979; Bjorkman, 1981; Lichtenthaler et al., 1981). The adaptation of individual plants or leaves to lo…
Cytokeratins in normal lung and lung carcinomas
1984
The various epithelial cells of the lower respiratory tract and the carcinomas derived from them differ markedly in their differentiation characteristics. Using immunofluorescence microscopy and two-dimensional gel electrophoresis of cytoskeletal proteins from microdissected tissues we have considered whether cytokeratin polypeptides can serve as markers of cell differentiation in epithelia from various parts of the human and bovine lower respiratory tract. In addition , we have compared these protein patterns with those found in the two commonest types of human lung carcinoma and in several cultured lung carcinoma cell lines. By immunofluorescence microscopy, broad spectrum antibodies to c…
HPLC: a tool for the analysis of T-2 toxin and HT-2 toxin in cereals.
1984
An analytical procedure for the determination of trichothecenes in various cereals is described. HPLC was performed with a reversed-phase (C18) column eluted with methanol:water (60:40, v/v). Compounds were detected with a refractive index detector. The elution patterns of free and contaminated samples were compared. The recovery of added T-2 toxin (2 and 5 micrograms/g) in rye and wheat was approximately 80%. The application of this method allows for combined use with other sensitive methods such as mass spectrometry and gas chromatography. The described method is operationally simple, relatively inexpensive, and requires no derivatization.
Electron microscopic observations on primary hepatocyte cultures infected with herpes simplex virus Types I and II
1984
The replication cycle of the Herpes simplex virus (HSV) strains I and II has so far been described mainly in established proliferative cell cultures. Most of the biochemical data and ultrastructural cell changes regarding the virus-cell interaction have been obtained from ‘permissive’ cells which allow almost unrestricted viral multiplication. It seems obvious, however, that the in vivo viral infections are not represented adequately by these experiments. In order to achieve a more realistic view of the ultrastructural events during HSV infection of adult tissue, cell cultures were prepared from adult mouse and rat livers and infected with several HSV strains. Established ‘permissive’ cell …
Comparison of the Effects of Indole-3-Acetic Acid and Kinetin on the Photosynthetic Apparatus and on the Cell Metabolism
1984
External and internal factors can exert a regulatory influence on growth and differentiation within a reaction norm determined by the genetic material. As to the internal factors, the phytohormones intervene in the most development processes in a regulatory manner. In a number of publications it was pointed out that there is a far-reaching accordance between the effects caused by I.4A and the effects induced by red light and low light conditions (Zerbe, Wild, 1980 a; Holzapfel et al., 1982 a). Plants of Sinapis alba grown under low light conditions but additionally treated with kinetin show changes in their metabolism that are characteristic of plants grown at higher light intensities (Zerb…

Determination Of Pulmonary Parameters (V̇A, $$ {D_{{L_{{O^2}}}}} $$ ) From Arterial O2 and CO2 Partial Pressures During Exercise
1984
The arterial O2 and CO2 partial pressures mainly depend on the ventilation-perfusion ratio VA/Q and on the O2 diffusing capacity-perfusion ratio DLO2/Q. According to RAHN’s VA/Q concept, the dependence of the alveolar O2 and CO2 partial pressures on the ventilation-perfusion ratio can be determined graphically, and displayed in the form of a diagram (2,3). However, the application of the RAHN diagram is limited by the fact that during the passage of the blood through the lung capillaries, a complete adjustment of the capillary O2 partial pressure to the alveolar value frequently does not occur. This is particularly valid for gas exchange during exercise. For this case, the alveolar-endcapil…
Equilibrium and transport properties of ion-exchange membranes
1984
Abstract Specific properties (ion-exchange capacity, water content, pore volume fraction) and transport properties (counterion transport number and electrical conductivity) have been measured in four commercial cation-exchange membranes loaded with a variety of cations of different nature and charge. Not surprisingly, equivalent conductances are lower than in free solution and transport numbers decrease with valency of the counterion. This behavior is explained by taking into account a “tortuosity factor”, due to a lengthening of the pores across the membrane, except for a membrane with a lower water content and for ions of higher charge, in which electrostatic interactions between mobile a…
