Time-dependent monomerization of bacteriorhodopsin in triton X-100 solutions analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography

1984

Abstract Bacteriorhodopsin from Halobacterium halobium was monomerized in Triton X-100 solutions. The process of delipidation was monitored by size-exclusion high-performance liquid chromatography under conditions that preserved the native conformation of the protein. The effects on the process of monomerization of the concentration and pH of the Triton X-100 solutions were investigated. The monomeric bacteriorhodopsin separated was active in light-dependent proton translocation when incorporated into soy bean lecithin liposomes.

Volumes of certain small geodesic balls and almost-Hermitian geometry

1984

Let D be the characteristic connection of an almost-Hermitian manifold, V D m (r) the volume of a small geodesic ball for the connection D and C C D 1 the first non-trivial term of the Taylor expansion of V D m (r). NK-manifolds are characterized in terms of C C D 1 and a family of Hermitian manifolds for which ∫ M C C D 1 dvol is a spectral invariant is given and one proves that C C D 1 and the spectrum of the complex Laplacian, together, determine the class in which a compact Hermitian manifold lines.

Spherical multiquark states in the chiral bag model

1984

Abstract We study n-quark systems (n = 3, 6, 12) in the chiral bag model. In order to handle the non-linearities of the model, the hedgehog ansatz for the Goldstone pion field is used. It is found that due to “warping” of the quark orbits in the presence of mean-field pion clouds, a strong repulsion is developed when more than three quarks are put in a bag. This repulsion mechanism turns out to be close to the soliton mechanism discovered by Skyrme two decades ago. Even the magnitude of the repulsion agrees with his. It is also possible to relate the repulsion to the effective quenching of the axial charge of the multiquark system and a suggestion is made that the recently observed quenchin…

Endokrinologische Untersuchungen bei Patienten mit Prostatakarzinom unter Palliativtherapie mit dem Gonadotropin-Releasing-Hormon Analog Buserelin

1984

Gas—liquid chromatographic analyses

1984

Abstract The gas choromatographic retention behaviour of veratrole and all nine chlorinated veratroles was studied on SE-30 and OV-351 capillary columns. Temperature programming from 100°C at 6°C min−1 and isothermal operation at 140, 160, 180 and 200°C were used. The complete separation of a mixture was obtained on SE-30, the isomers being eluted in order of their degree of chlorination. On OV-351, however, the 3,4,5-trichloro and tetrachloro isomers overlap with temperature programming, being separated at 140, 160 and 200°C. Retention indices and increments of retention indices for each position of substitution are examined and the effect of increasing temperature on retention is discusse…

3H-uridine labelling patterns and chromosomal polymorphism inDrosophila subobscura: J and U chromosomes

1984

The3H-uridine labelling patterns in J and U polytene chromosomes ofDrosophila subobscura were determined. The analysis was carried out in two developmental stages and in two strains proceeding from the same geographical origin whose genotypes were: Jst/Jst; U1+2/U1+2 and J1/J1; U1+2+8/U1+2+8 respectively. It was observed that the labelling pattern coincided very approximately with the puffing pattern in the same stages and chromosomal arrangements. Comparison of the3H-Uridine incorporation patterns between chromosomal arrangements showed light quantitative differences. These results are discussed in relation to the inversion effect.

Normal Values of Oxygen Concentration in Human Blood

1984

Under physiological conditions, the oxygen supply as the product of O2-concentration (mlO2/dl; %(v/v)) and perfusion is influenced by many factors (cf. Fig. 1): perfusion on one hand, oxygen partial pressure (pO2; mmHg), haemoglobin (Hb) concentration (g/dl) and O2 binding power of Hb on the other hand. Under pathological conditions, oxygen supply disturbances are related to hypoxemia, i.e. reduction of O2-concentration in the blood. The differential diagnosis of hypoxemia includes normoxic, hypoxic and circulatoric disturbances of oxygen supply (cf. Fig. 1). Thus it is necessary to describe a NORMOXIC HYPOXEMIA (anemic or toxemic), a HYPOXIC HYPOXEMIA (decreased O2-concentration caused by …

Recent Developments in our Approach to Multiple-Criteria Decision Making

1984

Approximately ten years ago we began a study of multiple criteria decision making at the European Insti tute for Advanced Studies in Management in Brussels. The project started as a way of finding a multiple objective linear programming method that would work better than those tested by Wallenius (1975). We did a substantial amount of work on the problem and came up with such a method (Zionts and Wallenius, 1976). Wallenius’ (1975) thesis, one of the first outputs of that project, comprises a rather significant piece of research in the multiple criteria area. Since that time our work has continued. We have worked together on a great deal of it; some of it has involved students and other fac…

Comparison of the activity, selectivity and decay properties of lay and hyultrastable zeolites during the cracking of alkanes

1984

Abstract The cracking of n-heptane on LaY ultrastable zeolite has been studied in a continuous glass flow reactor, at atmospheric pressure, up to 470°C. The initial selectivity to cracking, isomerization and disproportionation, kinetic rate constants, activation energies and decay parameters have been calculated and compared with those obtained using a HY ultrastable zeolite as a catalyst. It has been found that the HY ultrastable zeolite is about 7 times more active for cracking, and about 10 times more active for isomerization and disproportionation than the LaY ultrastable zeolite. The protolytic to β-cracking ratio is higher for the HY ultrastable zeolite. The deactivation takes place b…

The Electric Field Gradient and the Quadrupole Interaction

1984

The Mossbauer effect has become a popular method in analytical chemistry. In contrast to other techniques such as x-ray spectroscopy, NMR, EPR, and MCD where highly sophisticated evaluation procedures are applied to obtain reliable information on the chemical compound, the Mossbauer effect is generally used on a low level concerning the evaluation of quadrupole split spectra. This procedure on a low level is favored by the structure of the spectra especially the simple doublet of the 3/2 → 1/2 nuclear transitions in paramagnetic and diamagnetic compounds. The separation of the two absorption lines, the quadrupole splitting ΔE Q and the center of the two lines, the isomer shift, are easily d…

Kapitza resistance of laser-annealed surfaces

1984

Our understanding of the phonon processes at the interfaces between two media is still quite rudimentary. Particularly notorious is the helium-solid interface, where the accoustic impedances differ by a large amount. It is well known that the Kapitza resistance, i.e. the thermal boundary resistance between helium and a solid, is usually up to 100 times smaller than predicted by the acoustic theory as formulated by Khalatnikov [1]. However, it was shown by J. WEBER et al. [2] that there was no discrepancy at surfaces of freshly cleaved crystals, i.e. at surfaces of exceptional good quality. Thus it is clear that surface irregularities must be responsible for the anomalous Kapitza resistance.…

Synthesis and mössbauer studies of some aquo complexes of tin(IV) with crown ethers

1984

Abstract The preparation, characterization, and 119Sn Mossbauer spectra of a number of tin(IV) complexes with cyclic polyethers are presented. With tin(IV) chloride and methyltin(IV) trichloride, 1:1 and 2:1 metal-to-crown-ether complexes are formed, while dimethyltin(IV) dichloride forms only 2:1 complexes; in every case, two water molecules are present in the solid state structure. An octahedral coordination geometry around the tin(IV) center is proposed on the basis of Mossbauer and IR spectra.

Selected enzyme activities in mouse cardiac muscle during training and terminated training

1984

We studied the effects of running-training, heavy exercise and termination of training on the heart weight, the ratio heart to body weight and the cardiac muscle activities of actomyosin ATPase, citrate synthase, succinate dehydrogenase, cytochrome c oxidase, malate dehydrogenase, adenylate kinase and beta-glucuronidase with adult male NMRI-mice. Stable hypertrophy (6-7%), estimated by the ratio heart or ventricle weight to body weight, was achieved by 28 exercises and it was dependent on the running speed (20 vs. 25 m X min-1). The withdrawal of training for 5-61 days did not permanently decrease the heart weight or the heart to body weight ratio to the level of sedentary controls. The act…

Provided a polymer is soluble, i. e., molecularly dispersed in another polymer irrespective of the molecular weight of the components, the solution is exothermic. By increasing the temperature two effects, both unfavourable to mixing become larger: (i) the excess entropy of mixing caused by contact interaction and (ii) the total effect from the difference of the free volumes of the pure components. So, an upper miscibility gap occurs. The thermodynamic properties of the mixture cannot be derived from the properties of the pure components. They can be described by the corresponding states theory of Prigogine, Flory, and Patterson with suitable values for the contact energy and contact entrop…

Ethics of sport : junior football players as cross-national interpreters of the moral concepts of sport

1984

In competitive sport the expression "fair play" often stands as a very important symbol. M.J. Borotra has eloquently stated: "The defense of sport implies on the first place the defense of fair play". However, in the real world of modern sport, what is the valid meaning of fairness in terms of overt behavior? To what extent does it have any instrumental implication in the heat of the contest? What do athletes mean by fair, or right, behavior in sport? Are they unanimous in their notion about what is right or wrong in a contest?

Quantitative determination of moniliformin in vegetable foods and feeds

1984

A suitable and simple method for the quantitative determination of moniliformin in vegetable foods and feeds is described. The mycotoxin was extracted by Soxhlet extraction with methanol from mouldy maize, rice, rye, oats, wheat and barley samples. Moniliformin was determined by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) using N-methylbenzthiazolon-2-hydrazone (MBTH) as a new derivatization reagent for this mycotoxin. The moniliformin derivative was assayed at 518 nm. Quantification could be performed after calibration. A linear relationship between mycotoxin amount and peak area was found from 100 to 400 ng/spot. The detection limit is 75 ng/spot.
