Abstract Let q be an integer ≥2 and Ω a suitable subset of {0,…,q − 1}2; C (q; Ω) denotes the set of natural integers, the pairs of successive q-adic digits of which are in Ω. If P is an irrational polynomial, the sequence (P(n): n ∈ C (q; Ω)) is uniformly distributed modulo one.
Pathogenesis of circulatory reactions triggered by nervous reflexes during the implantation of bone cements.
1983
Circulatory and respiratory reactions during the implantation of joint endoprostheses have been observed for years. The components of the bone cements used for anchoring (methyl methacrylate monomer) or the outpour of bone marrow substances from the affected bone marrow cavity are thought to be chiefly responsible for these effects. However, our previous investigations demonstrated unambiguously that reactions of this type can be attributed to direct nervous-reflex mechanisms triggered by the pressure rise in the medullary canal, and that, in addition, bone marrow embolism plays a part in serious circulatory incidents. The investigations on which the present paper is based have confirmed th…

Abstract Primary amines with an optical active ligand add to vinyl- and propenylphosphonium salts according the reaction schemes (5) and (6), forming compounds of the type E and F. F contains a new asymmetric center in the bridge giving rise to the formation of a mixture of diastereomers, which can be resolved. Phosphonium salts of type E and F with a benzyl group on the phosphonium center are cleaved reductively by alkali amalgams (Li/Hg; Na/Hg; K/Hg) forming tertiary phosphines with an aminogroup in the β-position. The reductive cleavage with alkali amalgams is superior to the cathodic cleavage. Application: The synthesis of Ni(O)- and Pd(O)-complexes of type J fails. Bis-phosphine comple…
UV-photometrische analyse kationisch erzeugter polystyrole, 1. Nachweis des covalenten einbaus von acylresten aus aromatischen acylperchloraten
1983
Polymerization of styrene was found not to take place with 4-phenylazobenzoyl perchlorate in benzene solution. 4-Biphenylcarbonyl perchlorate, however, initiates styrene polymerization under the same conditions leading to a product not containing acyl groups as indicated by UV spectroscopic analysis. 4-Phenylazobenzoyl, 2-naphthoyl, and 9,10-dioxo-2-anthracenecarbonyl perchlorate (6b, 7b, and 8b), prepared form silver perchlorate and the corresponding acyl chlorides 6a, 7a, and 8a in styrene, were found to initiate the polymerization of styrene under anhydrous conditions at −25°C in the dark. By UV spectroscopy it could be shown that the resulting polymers contain covalently bound acyl grou…

Solutions of poly (decyl methacrylate) in isooctane (2,2, 4-trimethylpentane) show lower critical solution temperatures (LCST) that lie well below the thermal degradation of the polymer. The corresponding exothermal theta-temperature (from the Shultz-Flory plot) amounts to 210°C. The increase in solvent quality by pressure turns out to be very pronounced (d Tc/dp ≈ +1 K/bar). With solutions of the polymer in motor oils, high temperature demixing is unlikely to occur below their boiling point. The theoretical evaluation of published experimental data for 11 different systems exhibiting LCSTs demonstrates the following: Under the equilibrium vapour pressure of the solution high temperature de…
Angioma-Like Pseudometamorphosis in Wilms' Tumors Subjected to Preoperative Radio- and Chemotherapy
1983
Six Wilms' tumors (stage III-V), which had undergone preoperative irradiation and chemotherapy, were examined histologically. While mesenchymal and differentiated epithelial tumor elements were preserved to a large extent, blastemic tumor structures were almost completely lacking. Instead, pseudoangioma-like structures similar to cavernous hemangioma prevailed. As demonstrated by transitional pictures, the pseudoangioma-like pattern is a result of the fact that blastemic tumor elements are replaced by blood after therapy-induced necrosis and lysis. The clinical advantages of preoperative treatment are briefly discussed, especially for patients with advanced tumors.

Potential Off-Flavour Compounds from Chloro-Bleaching of Pulp and Chlorodisinfection of Water
1983
Chlorobleaching of pulp is the most important source of organochlorine pollutants in the Finnish aquatic ecosystems. Similar types of pollutants are formed during chlorodisinfection of water. The model compound approach employed in our laboratory has revealed the structures and amounts of pollutants formed and has made the interpretation and assay of individual organochlorine compounds in the environment possible. Tainting of fish near chlorination plants is frequently observed. Especially chlorinated phenols and anisoles (microbial metabolites of the former) are chlorination products which are known to have a strong odour and taste at very low concentrations. Other chlorinated products, wh…
Thermodynamics of binary mixtures: Volumes, heat capacities, and dilution enthalpies for then-pentanol+2-methyl-2-butanol system
1983
The densities, heat capacities, and dilution enthalpies ofn-pentanol+2-methyl-2-butanol mixtures have been measured, in many cases as a function of temperature, over the complete mole fraction range. Excesses thermodynamic properties, apparent and partial molar heat capacities, volumes and expansibilities were derived. The concentration and temperature dependences of these functions are discussed in terms of the variations of the structure of the system caused by the participation of the two alcohol molecules (with quite different steric hindrance of the alkyl chain around the-OH group) in the dynamic intermolecular association process through hydrogen bonding.
FEEDFORWARD CONTROL SCHEMES FOR CHEMICAL PROCESSES: AN ALGORITHMIC APPROACH
1983
Abstract A procedure for the systematic determination of feedforward control schemes for chemical processes is presented and an algorithm is derived. The proposed method makes use of the structural features of the process to be controlled and can be applied to linearized process models. Worked examples show how the algorithm can be a handy tool that systemizes the choice of manipulative and measuring variables in feedforward control schemes for multivariate processes.
Detection of mitochondrial antibodies directed against the primary biliary cirrhosis (M2) antigen by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)
1983
An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed for the detection of 1 subtype of mitochondrial antibodies (AMA) specific for chronic cholestatic inflammatory liver diseases. AMA were detected by ELISA in 16 of 16 patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and in 2 of 31 patients with chronic active hepatitis. These 18 positive sera were positive for AMA by indirect immunofluorescence (IF) and by radioimmunoassay (RIA). No AMA were detected by ELISA in 2 patients with the pseudolupus erythematosus syndrome, who were positive for AMA by IF, 2 patients with secondary syphilis, positive for cardiolipin antibodies, 1 patient with systemic lupus erythematosus, positive for AMA by I…
Mutagenicity of glutathione and cysteine in the Ames test.
1983
Postmitochondrial supernatant from rat liver and kidney homogenates transformed cysteine into a mutagen that reverted bacteria of the strain Salmonella typhimurium TA100 to histidine independence. Glutathione was also activated by kidney postmitochondrial supernatant but not by liver preparations. Hence, important endogenous compounds of mammals are positive in the most commonly used short-term test for carcinogenicity and mutagenicity. Glutathione is positive in the test even at concentrations found in mammalian tissues.
Chlorophyll-protein-complexes of thylakoids of wild type and chlorophyll b mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana
1983
Pigment-protein-complexes of two chlorophyll b deficient mutants of Arabidopsis and from the wild type were separated electrophoretically. Light-harvesting proteins were absent in the chlorophyll b free mutant ch(1) and their amount was reduced in the mutant ch(2) which has a reduced content of chlorophyll b. The ratio of CPa:CP I increased with decreasing chlorophyll b content which indicated that the stoichiometry of photosystem II to photosystem I is not constant.
Influence of digoxin on sinus node function after pharmacologic autonomic blockade.
1983
The effect of iv digoxin on normal sinus node function was studied after pharmacologic autonomic blockade (AB) in ten patients. Sinus cycle length (SCL), sinus node recovery time (SNRT) and sinoatrial conduction time (SACT) were determined before and after AB with propranolol (0.2 mg/kg body weight) and atropine sulfate (0.04 mg/kg body weight) iv, and 15 min, 30 min, and 45 min after 1 mg iv digoxin. AB resulted in a significant decrease (P less than 0.01) in SCL (916 +/- 158 to 716 +/- 120 ms), in SNRT (1,229 +/- 221 to 871 +/- 190 ms), and in SACT (79 +/- 34 to 44 +/- 10 ms). Fifteen minutes after iv digoxin there was no significant change observed in SCL (716 +/- 120 to 708 +/- 92 ms), …

3H-estradiol and3H-R5020 binding in cytosols of normal and neoplastic human ovarian tissue
1983
High-affinity cytoplasmic estrogen and progesterone receptors in normal and abnormal ovarian tissues were studied. Estradiol receptor was detectable in 65% and progesterone receptor in 36% of the malignant tumors; 39% of all malignant ovarian tissues were estradiol- as well as progesterone-receptor-positive. Tumors were said to be receptor-positive when the receptors bound greater than 5 fM steroid/mg cytosol protein. No correlations were found between receptor status and histopathological diagnosis. In normal ovarian tissues collected at various phases of the menstrual cycle no changes in [3H]-estradiol and [3H]-R5020 binding could be detected. Analysis of the receptor concentration for bo…

Secondary structure of peptides. 4:13C-Nmr CP/MAS investigation of solid oligo- and poly(L-alanines)
1983
Primary and tertiary amine-initiated polymerizations of L-alanine-N-carboxyanhydride (L-Ala-NCA) were conducted at 20 or 100°C in a variety of solvents. The 75.5-MHz 13C-nmr CP/MAS spectra of the resulting poly(L-alanines) revealed that all samples contain both α-helix and pleated-sheet structures. Depending on the reaction conditions the α-helix content varied between ca. 1 and 99%. Reprecipitation from aprotic nonsolvents does not change the α-helix/β-sheet ratio, indicating that this ratio is thermodynamically controlled. Since relatively large amounts of oligopeptides of degree of polymerization (DP) 4–6 can be extracted by means of acetic acid, it is concluded that (a) most poly(L-alan…
Improvement of the butyl methacrylate-paraffin embedment.
1983
The excellent butyl methacrylate-paraffin method as an embedment for light microscopy has been technically improved. More uniform and reproducible polymerization has been obtained by using a vacuum oven to degas the polymerizing mixture and to replace the air with nitrogen at 650 Torr. The amount of benzoyl peroxide required must be determined for each batch of butyl methacrylate. A teflon lined, reusable metal mold and a method of one-step blocking of tissues in preparation for sectioning are also described.
Effects of an artificial magnetic field on serotonin N-acetyltransferase activity and melatonin content of the rat pineal gland
1983
In the present study the effects of artificial magnetic fields on pineal serotonin-N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity and melatonin content in male Sprague-Dawley rats were investigated to study the secretory activity of the pineal gland. Experimental inversion of the horizontal component of the natural magnetic field, performed at night-time, led to a significant decrease of both parameters investigated. During day-time, this effect was less conspicuous. During night-time, inversion of the horizontal component is followed by a reduced pineal secretory activity for about 2 h. After 24 h exposure to the inverted horizontal component, return to the natural condition was followed by a renewed …
Histoincompatibility reactions in the hydrocoral Millepora dichotoma
1983
The xenogeneic- and allogeneic immunological specificity of the hydrocoral Millepora dichotoma has been investigated. Xenogeneic histoicompatibility reactions have been observed between this hydrocoral and a series of species belonging to the Demospongiae and to the Anthozoa (both Hexacorallia and Octocorallia). The xenogeneic histoincompatibility reactions proceed in the following sequence: (a) Species-unspecific sensitization; (b) necrosis formation, which is very likely due to an autolytic process; (c) callus formation, due to an hyperplastic growth of stolons; and (d) formation of a contact barrier in form of a barrier layer or a restored stolonial layer. Allogeneic histoincompatibility…
Antidiabetic Behavior of Biguanides
1983
The existence of active electron pairs on some nitrogen atoms in phenformin hydrochloride is inferred from the presence of a hydrogen catalytic polarographic wave. This finding emphasizes the ability of biguanides to form hydrogen bridges with other molecular species such as amino acids and proteins, as well as to form coordination complexes with zinc and other metallic cations by means of these electron pairs. The antidiabetic action of phenformin and other related biguanides can be explained in terms of competition between these molecules and insulin to coordinate cationic oligoelements together with their ability to form hydrogen bonds between the biguanide moiety and insulin itself.
Effects of amsacrine (m-AMSA), a new aminoacridine antitumor drug, on the rabbit heart.
1983
There is emerging clinical evidence that amsacrine (m-AMSA) administration may be associated with cardiotoxic effects such as severe, even fatal, ventricular arrhythmias and impairment of the inotropic performance of the heart. Information on the cardiac effects of m-AMSA in animals is scanty. Studies on mice, dogs, and monkeys have not evidenced the cardiotoxicity of the compound. The data presented in this paper show that m-AMSA causes acute ECG alterations in normal rabbits and a dose-related negative inotropic effect on the isolated rabbit heart, suggesting that this species may be a useful model for the study of the cardiac actions of this antiblastic.
Comparative study of the arterial and lacunary systems of the ventricular myocardium of elasmobranch and teleost fishes.
1983
The typical fish heart has a spongy trabeculated ventricular myocardium (spongiosa) supplied by the venous blood of the intertrabecular spaces (lacunae); hence it is called a "venous heart." However, in some fishes a more complex ventricular muscle is found (mixed type), in which the spongiosa is covered by an outer layer of densely arranged myocardial bundles (compacta). The compacta receives oxygenated blood from the coronary vessels. The objective of this study was to investigate relations between myoarchitecture and blood supply with an emphasis on the hitherto unexplored, putative vascular connections between the arterial and the lacunary circuits. Using histological methods combined w…
Sound conversion phenomena at the free surface of liquid helium. II. Experimental determination of acoustic coefficients and surface absorption coeff…
1983
The acoustic coefficients of reflection, transmission, and transformation of first-, second-, and gas sound waves incident normally on the free surface of liquid helium have been determined. The experimental results are compared with the theory developed in Part I of this paper. It is shown that equilibrium theories of boundary conditions disagree with the experiments. Nonequilibrium theories, however, which take into account that mass and energy transport processes occur at the liquid-vapor interface of helium II, lead to a very good description of the experimental data below 2 K. Within experimental accuracy the measurements fully confirm several kinetic models of evaporation and energy t…
Permittivity Measurements of Lossy Liquids at Millimeter-Wave Frequencies
1983
A measurement system is described which allows the determination of the complex permittivity of high-loss liquids at millimeter waves. Basically, the setup consists of a waveguide interferometer whose unknown arm embodies a liquid holder irradiated by an open-ended rectangular waveguide. The sample thickness is varied by means of a piston driven by a micrometer screw. The bridge output then is read as a function of the liquid thickness. Best fitting between experimental and computed data through a suitable model of the system enables the permittivity to be determined. The system can operate, with high sensitivity, over the whole frequency range of the dominant mode propagating in the wavegu…

An Interactive Multiple Objective Linear Programming Method for a Class of Underlying Nonlinear Utility Functions
1983
This paper develops a method for interactive multiple objective linear programming assuming an unknown pseudo concave utility function satisfying certain general properties. The method is an extension of our earlier method published in this journal (Zionts, S., Wallenius, J. 1976. An interactive programming method for solving the multiple criteria problem. Management Sci. 22 (6) 652–663.). Various technical problems present in predecessor versions have been resolved. In addition to presenting the supporting theory and algorithm, we discuss certain options in implementation and summarize our practical experience with several versions of the method.
Some biomechanical aspects of the foot and ankle in athletes with and without shin splints
1983
Thirteen adult male athletes (long-distance runners and orienteerers without foot problems) and 35 male ath letes with shin splints were compared with respect to: 1) the position of the lower leg and the heel while standing, 2) the passive range of mobility in the subtalar joint, and 3) the angular displacement between the calcaneus and the midline of the lower leg (Achilles tendon angle) while running with bare feet on a tread mill. In standing, the two groups differed statistically significantly in the Achilles tendon angle, which values were greater in the shin splint group. With respect to passive mobility, the athletes with shin splints had significantly greater (P < 0.05-0.01) ang…

A novel synthesis of 2-aryl-4-piperidones by mannich cyclization of iminoketals
1983
2-Aryl-4-piperidones have been synthesized by condensation between an aromatic aldehyde and a β-aminoketone ethylene ketal, and further cyclization of the resulting iminoketal with dry hydrogen chloride or anhydrous p-toluensulfonic acid. Alternatively, reaction of the above iminoketals with methyl fluorosulfonate followed by dry hydrogen chloride treatment and acid hydrolysis gives directly N-methyl-4-piperidones. The application of these reactions to the synthesis of some 2-aryl-3-acetylpyrrolidine systems is also described.

SPECTRAL ANALYSIS WITH TAPERED DATA
1983
. A new method based on an upper bound for spectral windows is presented for investigating the cumulants of time series statistics. Using this method two classical results are proved for tapered data. In particular, the asymptotic normality for a class of spectral estimates including estimates for the spectral function and the covariance function is proved under integrability conditions on the spectra using the method of cumulants.
