Publisher Summary Recent experiments using glass microelectrodes have demonstrated that very low tissue pH-values are prevalent in C3H mouse mammary carcinomas. The acidification of the tumor tissue is the result of an elevated lactic acid production and its inadequate removal. As a consequence of heterogeneities in tumor blood flow and in substrate supply, tissue pH values are distributed heterogeneously within solid tumors. Although glass microelectrodes with tip diameters of about 1 μm and a sensitive length of 10–50 μm have been used, the spatial resolution can be improved utilizing glass coated antimony microelectrodes the sensitive areas of that are restricted to their very tips. Finite element approximation of vector fields given by curl and divergence

In this paper a finite element approximation scheme for the system curl is considered. The use of pointwise approximation of the boundary condition leads to a nonconforming method. The error estimate is proved and numerically tested.

Many solid tumors disturbances in the vascularization and in the microcirculation generally lead to distinct restrictions in the convective and diffusive transport. Beyond that, a heterogeneous distribution of the transport conditions develops causing an insufficient and heterogeneous substrate supply as well as an inadequate drainage of wastes. Abstract The configurations and conformations of torreyol (6; “δ-cadinol”,10α-hydroxy-4-muurolene), α-cadinol (7; 10α-hydroxy-4-cadinene), T-muurolol (8; 10β-hydroxy-4-muurolene), and T-cadinol (9; 10β-hydroxy-4-cadinene) have been determined by an extensive PMR study using lanthanide-induced shifts. Characteristic mass spectrometric fragmentation patterns of muurolols and cadinols are briefly discussed.

Fatty acid composition of mutants of the moss Physcomitrella patens

Abstract The fatty acid composition of various mutant strains of the moss Physcomitrella patens has been compared to the wild-type. These included strains defective in their responses to auxins and/or cytokinins, one which releases much more cytokinin into the medium than the wild-type, and two aphototropic strains. The lipids of the aphototropic mutants were also studied after culture in different light regimes. Although some differences in fatty acid composition have been found between strains, these alone are probably not responsible for their physiological differences. Following a lecture delivered by Herglotz in 1925/26 we briefly treat acceleration waves in hyperelastic materials. Our main result is a divergence equation for the squared Euclidean norm of the so-called ‘wave vector’. We then apply Herglotz’ method (devised for acceleration waves) to the propagation of such first order discontinuities in elastic bodies as were treated by Christoffel in [1].

Zahlreiche CT-Scanner erlauben das Studium der knochernen Strukturen der Schadelbasis und der Schadelkalotte. Durch Wegfall einer Wasserbox und Vergroserung der Offnung der Gantry ist heute eine freie Lagerung des Kopfes des Patienten und damit die Abtastung sehr tiefer Schadelschichten ebenso wie eine coronare Schnittfuhrung moglich. Durch eine hochauflosende Matrix (z.B. 320 x 320 bei dem fur die meisten hier gezeigten Untersuchungen verwendeten CT-Scanner EMI 5005) wird ein sehr prazises Bild erzeugt.

Determination of Phenols from Automobile Exhaust by Means of High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)

Abstract The paper describes a procedure to determine ten representative phenols (phenol, m-, p-, o-cresol, 2,4-, 2,6-, 3,4-, 3,5-xylenol, 2,3,6-, 2,4,6-trimethylphenol) in engine exhaust. Sampling was performed by a conventional Grimmer device. A sample of the water condensate collected was extracted with ether. After concentration of the ether extract phenols were isolated from other interfering compounds by stepwise elution on a Lobar column packed with LiChroprep Si 60 under controlled conditions. The disposition of azapropazone 600 mg i.v. was investigated in 6 healthy subjects, 13 patients with cirrhosis and 8 patients with renal failure. In healthy subjects the elimination half-life was 12.2±2.1 h (mean ± SD), the volume of distribution 10.6±3.31 and the total clearance was 597±135 ml·h−1. Renal clearance accounted for about 62% of the total clearance. The free fraction of azapropazone in the plasma was 0.0045±0.0006. The patients with cirrhosis were divided into Group I with modest and Group II with severe impairment of liver function. Abstract Microcomplement fixation analysis of albumin relationship shows that the Balearic green toad (Bufo viridis balearicus) is not an original, autochthonous member of the basically Miocene fauna of these western Mediterranean islands, but a quite recent newcomer. This paper includes the case of branching from the trivial solution at simple and multiple eigenvalues and perturbed bifurcation at simple eigenvalues.
