Determinants of Board Size, Composition and Leadership

Using a 14-year panel data set on the Standard and Poor’s 1500 firms, this chapter examines the trends and determinants of corporate board structure (Board size, independence and CEO duality). Our hypotheses lead to predictions that firm complexity and advising requirements, the costs of monitoring and advising, ownership structure and CEO characteristics are important determinants of board structure. Our findings provide strong empirical evidence in support of these hypotheses. We also find some evidence that the Sarbanes–Oxley Act has had an impact on board structure and its determinants.

Prudential Supervisorss Independence and Income Smoothing in European Banks

We investigate the role of prudential supervisors’ independence in affecting income smoothing behavior in European banks. Powerful national supervisors are predicted to influence the accounting practices of their supervised entities, shaping the properties of the accounting numbers they prepare. In particular, we study whether greater independence of powerful supervisors from the government and from the industry is associated with lower income smoothing. We use the mandatory adoption of a single set of accounting standards in Europe as a shock to the influence of prudential supervisors over national banks’ accounting practice. In this study, we investigated for the first time the anti-proliferative and antioxidant properties of D. mezereum and D. striata. The aerial parts were extracted by maceration with n-hexane, dichloromethane, and methanol. MPLC, GC, and GC-MS were used for the phytochemical study. The anti-proliferative activity was tested against MCF-7, A549, LNCaP, ACHN, and C32 cancer human cells. Genome-scale analysis of evolutionary rate and selection in a fast-expanding Spanish cluster of HIV-1 subtype F1.

Abstract This work is aimed at assessing the presence of positive selection and/or shifts of the evolutionary rate in a fast-expanding HIV-1 subtype F1 transmission cluster affecting men who have sex with men in Spain. We applied Bayesian coalescent phylogenetics and selection analyses to 23 full-coding region sequences from patients belonging to that cluster, along with other 19 F1 epidemiologically-unrelated sequences.
