Interesterification of rapeseed oil catalyzed by tin octoate

2014

The interesterification of rapeseed oil was performed for the first time by using tin octoate as Lewis acid homogeneous catalysts and methyl or ethyl acetate as acyl acceptors in a batch reactor, within the temperature range 393e483 K. The yields in fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEE) and triacetin (TA) after 20 h of reaction time increased from 8% and 2%eto 61% and 22%, respectively, when the reaction temperature increased from423 to 483 K. An optimum value of 40 for the acyl acceptor to oil molar ratio was found to be necessary to match good fatty acid alkyl ester yields with high enough reaction rate. The rate of generation of esters was significantly higher when methyl acetate was used as acyl …

Role of non-neuronal and neuronal acetylcholine in the airways

2001

It is well known that acetylcholine represents a dominant neurotransmitter within mammalian airways and that airway functions, like smooth muscle activity and secretion, are under a continuous cholinergic tone. However, the teleology of this basal cholinergic tone, assumed to originate from neuronal activity, appears difficult to understand, whereas neuronal cholinergic reflex activity can be regarded as a rational regulatory pathway to protect the airways from injury [1-3]. Based on recent experimental observations, both phenomena may reflect two different biological roles of acetylcholine, acting first as a universal cytomolecule (non-neuronal) and second as a classical neurotransmitter (…

Implication of three isoforms of PLA2in human T-cell proliferation

2002

We observed that human (Jurkat) T-cells constitutively expressed the mRNA, encoding for the four isoforms of phospholipase A(2) (PLA(2)), i.e. two secretory (type IB and type V), and two cytosolic (type IV, Ca(2+)-dependent and type VI, Ca(2+)-independent). In order to assess whether these PLA(2) isoforms are active, we labeled Jurkat T-cells with [(3)H]arachidonic acid ([(3)H]AA) and determined its release into the extracellular medium in the presence of phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) and ionomycin. The three PLA(2) isoforms seem functional as aristolochic acid and bromoenol lactone (BEL), the respective inhibitors of type IB/type V and type VI PLA(2)s, significantly inhibited the r…

Simultaneous determination of bisphenol A, octylphenol, and nonylphenol by pressurised liquid extraction and liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectr…

2011

Abstract A new analytical method, using pressurised liquid extraction (PLE) and liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS), was developed for the simultaneous determination of bisphenol A (BPA), octylphenol (OP) and nonylphenol (NP) in powdered infant formulas (IF) and powdered skimmed milk (PM). The analytes were extracted by PLE, using this optimised conditions: ethyl acetate as solvent, 70 °C of temperature, reversed-phase silica C18 as dispersing agent and three cycles of extraction. The extracts were then injected in LC–MS/MS using a Gemini C18 column and a mixture of 5% water and 95% methanol/acetonitrile, both with 0.1% ammonia, as a mobile phase. Recoveries at differe…

Effects of oral contraceptives on metabolic profile in women with polycystic ovary syndrome: A meta-analysis comparing products containing cyproteron…

2017

Abstract Background Although oral contraceptives (OCs) are the most common treatment in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), their effects and safety on the metabolic profiles of these patients are relatively unknown. In this meta-analysis the effects of the different durations (from 3 months to 1 year) of OC treatment using cyproterone acetate (CA) or third generation progestins on metabolic profile of patients with PCOS were assessed. Materials and methods PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar and ScienceDirect databases (2001–2015) were searched to identify clinical trials investigating the effects of OC containing CA or third generation progestins on metabolic profiles of women with PC…

Effects of marine 2-polyprenyl-1,4-hydroquinones on phospholipase A2 activity and some inflammatory responses.

1995

Three 2-polyprenyl-1,4-hydroquinone derivatives (2-heptaprenyl-1,4-hydroquinone: IS1, 2-octaprenyl-1,4-hydroquinone: IS2 and 2-[24-hydroxy]-octaprenyl-1,4-hydroquinone: IS3) isolated from the Mediterranean sponge Ircinia spinosula, were evaluated for effects on phospholipase A2 activity of different origin (Naja naja venom, human recombinant synovial fluid and bee venom), as well as on human neutrophil function and mouse ear oedema induced by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA). IS1 interacted minimally with these responses. In contrast, IS2 and IS3 inhibited human recombinant synovial phospholipase A2 in a concentration-dependent manner, with minor effects on the rest of the enzymes…

Inhibition of inflammatory responses by epitaondiol and other marine natural products

1995

The marine metabolites pacifenol, stypotriol triacetate and epitaondiol were tested for their effects on a number of inflammatory responses. Epitaondiol exhibited a potent topical anti-inflammatory activity related to inhibition of leukocyte accumulation. The other compounds showed a lower potency, similar to that of indomethacin. None of the compounds affected superoxide generation by human neutrophils but pacifenol effectively inhibited the degranulation response. This compound and epitaondiol decreased the release of eicosanoids with a higher potency on the cyclo-oxygenase pathway. Only epitaondiol inhibited human recombinant synovial phospholipase A2 activity in a concentration-dependen…

The effect of hormone replacement therapy on Ca2+ mobilization and P-selectin (CD62P) expression in platelets examined under flow cytometry.

2004

A series of events, such as increase of cytoplasmic free calcium (Ca 2+ ) and expression of P-selectin (CD62P), an adhesion molecule, on the platelet surface, are significant indicators of platelet activation. We have used flow cytometry to examine Ca 2+ mobilization and CD62P expression in platelets in whole blood obtained in women prior to, and after, different forms of hormone replacement therapy. Thirty-two women completed a protocol consisting of two consecutive 1-month periods under oestradlol (E 2 ), administered orally (2 mg/day) or transdermally (50 μg/day) in random order, followed by a 4-week transdermal sequential regime, in which, during the last 14 days, either progesterone (3…

DNA methylation and histone acetylation of rat methionine adenosyltransferase 1A and 2A genes is tissue-specific.

2000

Methionine adenosyltransferase (MAT) catalyzes the biosynthesis of S-adenosylmethionine (AdoMet). In mammals MAT activity derives from two separate genes which display a tissue-specific pattern of expression. While MAT1A is expressed only in the adult liver, MAT2A is expressed in non-hepatic tissues. The mechanisms behind the selective expression of these two genes are not fully understood. In the present report we have evaluated MAT1A and MAT2A methylation in liver and in other tissues, such as kidney, by methylation-sensitive restriction enzyme digestion of genomic DNA. Our data indicate that MAT1A is hypomethylated in liver and hypermethylated in non-expressing tissues. The opposite situ…
