Recent aflatoxin survey data in milk and milk products: A review

2017

Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) occurrence in human and animal milk, infant formula, powdered milk, cheese and yoghurt represents a risk for health. The last four years (2010–2014) of data, as well as the most frequently and updated analytical methods applied for AFM1 quantification, are evaluated. Aflatoxin B1, considered the most potent toxic aflatoxin, is metabolised to form the monohydroxy derivative AFM1. This metabolized, expressed in the milk, is relatively stable, and it is not eliminated by heat treatments or pasteurisation, and thus represents a serious health concern.

High Pressure Processing Impact on Alternariol and Aflatoxins of Grape Juice and Fruit Juice-Milk Based Beverages.

2021

High-pressure processing (HPP) has emerged over the last 2 decades as a good alternative to traditional thermal treatment for food safety and shelf-life extension, supplying foods with similar characteristics to those of fresh products. Currently, HPP has also been proposed as a useful tool to reduce food contaminants, such as pesticides and mycotoxins. The aim of the present study is to explore the effect of HPP technology at 600 MPa during 5 min at room temperature on alternariol (AOH) and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) mycotoxins reduction in different juice models. The effect of HPP has also been compared with a thermal treatment performed at 90 °C during 21 s. For this, different juice models, or…

Occurrence of aflatoxins in feedstuff, sheep milk and dairy products in Western Sicily

2003

Samples of feedstuffs (15), milk (40), and cheese (30) coming from sheep and dairy farms (23) or market in WesternSicily were analyzed for their respective content of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and M1 (AFM1) to evidence any possible indirectmycotoxin contamination risk to the consumer. Analyses using HPLC and fluorescence detection were performed afterimmunoaffinity column sample extraction and cleanup; AFM1 was detected in 30% of the milk samples at levels rangingfrom 4 to 23 ng/l and in 13% of the cheeses from 21 to 101 ng/kg; in the feed the AFB1 ranged from None of the contaminated samples exceeded the legal limits set down by the European Union for milk (50 ng/l) and feed(5 μg/kg ), or tha…

In vitro antifungal activity of lactic acid bacteria against mycotoxigenic fungi and their application in loaf bread shelf life improvement

2016

Food spoilage caused by mycotoxigenic fungi represents an important food safety problem. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are used as starter cultures in a larger number of food products. In this study, 16 strains of LAB were cultivated in MRS broth under anaerobiosis. Then, cell free supernatants were obtained by centrifugation and their antifungal activity against Aspergillus parasiticus and Penicillium expansum was tested using the disc-diffusion method. Furthermore, the LABs that showed in vitro antifungal activity were used in bread fermentation with yeast in order to study fungal growth inhibition and aflatoxin (AF) reduction in processed bread previously inoculated with A. parasiticus. The…

Recent advances in Nanomaterial-mediated Bio and immune sensors for detection of aflatoxin in food products

2017

Abstract Aflatoxin is the most harmful mycotoxin which is ubiquitous in foods and agricultural supplies. Since the health of human population is largely determined by the condition of food-producing, contaminated foods and agricultural supplies with aflatoxin can put the safety of people in jeopardy and lead to some fatal disease. In 2003 estimated the annual cost of aflatoxin contamination in the U.S. at about $500 million strong concern for human life. There are a great demand for development of rapid, sensitive and specific methods for detection of aflatoxin at trace levels. The purpose of this review is limited to novel aflatoxin biosensors, paying special attention to those based on th…

Occurrence and risk assessment of mycotoxins, acrylamide, and furan in Latvian beer.

2018

This work reports data on the occurrence of nine mycotoxins and two food processing contaminants - acrylamide and furan - in a total of 100 beers produced in Latvia. Mycotoxins were detected by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry, acrylamide by HPLC coupled with quadrupole-Orbitrap mass spectrometry, and furan by headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The most frequently occurring mycotoxins were HT-2 and deoxynivalenol (DON), which were detected in 52% and 51% of the analysed samples. The highest content was observed for DON, reaching the maximum of 248 µg kg-1. Furan was ubiquitous, and 74% of the samples contained acrylamid…

Sensitivity optimization with cladding-etched long period fiber gratings at the dispersion turning point

2016

This work presents a refractive index sensor based on a long period fiber grating (LPFG) made in a reduced cladding fiber whose low order cladding modes have the turning point at large wavelengths. The combination of these parameters results in an improved sensitivity of 8734 nm/refractive index unit (RIU) for the LP0,3 mode in the 1400-1650 wavelength range. This value is similar to that obtained with thin-film coated LPFGs, which permits to avoid the coating deposition step. The numerical simulations are in agreement with the experimental results. This work was supported in part by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science-FEDER TEC2013-43679-R. J.L. Cruz also acknowledges financial s…

Suitability of 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium ionic liquids for the analysis of pharmaceutical formulations containing tricyclic antidepressants

2018

Abstract The reversed-phase chromatographic behaviour of six tricyclic antidepressants (amitryptiline, clomipramine, doxepin, imipramine, nortryptiline and maprotiline) was examined in this work with acetonitrile-water mobile phases, in the absence and presence of the ionic liquids 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, which have interesting features for the separation of basic compounds, in terms of peak shape combined with reduced retention. Tricyclic antidepressants are low polarity drugs that strongly associate to the alkyl chains of conventional stationary phases. They are also positively charged in the usual working pH range (2–8) in r…

Micelles of the chiral biocompatible surfactant (1R,2S)-dodecyl(2-hydroxy-1-methyl-2-phenylethyl)dimethylammonium bromide (DMEB): molecular dynamics …

2017

Rationale The study of self-assembly process of surfactant molecules in gas phase is of actually interest for several theoretical and technological reasons related to their possible exploitation as drug carriers, protein shields and cleaning agents in gas phase. Methods Stability and fragmentation patterns of singly and multiply charged (either positively or negatively) aggregates of the surfactant (1R,2S)-dodecyl(2-hydroxy-1-methyl-2-phenylethyl) dimethyl ammonium bromide (DMEB) in gas phase have been studied by ion mobility mass spectrometry and tandem mass spectrometry. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of positively and negatively singly and multiply charged DMEB aggregates have been …
