Determination of key odorant compounds in freshly distilled Cognac using GC-O, GC-MS, and sensory evaluation

This aim of this work was to identify the odorant compounds responsible for the typical sensory descriptors attributed to freshly distilled Cognac spirits, not matured in barrels. Panelists were first selected and trained for gas chromatography−olfactometry. Among the 150 volatile compounds identified by gas chromatography−mass spectrometry analysis, only 34 are mainly responsible for the odors detected in the spirits. Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME) of Orange Juice Flavor:  Odor Representativeness by Direct Gas Chromatography Olfactometry (D-GC-O)

The sensorial quality of solid phase microextraction (SPME) flavor extracts from orange juice was measured by direct gas chromatogrphy-olfactometry (D-GC-O), a novel instrumental tool for evaluating odors from headspace extracts. In general, odor impressions emerging from SPME extracts poorly resembled that of the original orange juice. In an attempt to improve the sensorial quality of extracts, sample equilibration and exposure times were varied on Carboxen/polydimethylsiloxane (CAR/PDMS) and divinylbenzene/Carboxen/polydimethylsiloxane (DVB/CAR/PDMS) SPME fibers. Influence of packaging on the aroma stability of strawberry syrup during shelf life

Different types of packaging (glass bottle, PVC, and PET) were compared for the preservation of aroma quality of a strawberry syrup during shelf life. Esters, alcohols, and aldehydes were analyzed by solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME) and solvent extraction. During storage, hydrolysis of esters in acids and alcohols led to a modification of the aroma profile which can be explained by the replacement of “fruity” and “fresh” notes by “dairy note” in the syrup. Multi-residue determination of organic micro-pollutants in river sediment by stir-disc solid phase extraction based on oxidized buckypaper

This paper describes a procedure for the isolation of 20 organic micro-pollutants among pesticides, drugs, recreational drugs, flame retardants from river sediments. After a solid-liquid extraction with a methanol:water (50:50, v/v) solution, the supernatant was diluted with water and cleaned up by stir-disc solid-phase extraction (SPE). The disc was made of buckypaper, a self-supporting entangled assembly of carbon nanotubes, which was used as a highly porous, two-sided, sorbent membrane. Comparison of surfactant-mediated liquid chromatographic modes with sodium dodecyl sulphate for the analysis of basic drugs

In reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC), basic drugs are positively charged at the usual working pH range and interact with free anionic silanols present in conventional silica-based stationary phases. This translates into stronger retention and tailed and broadened peaks. A rapid and sensitive method for the control of selected regulated and emerging mycotoxins in beer

A fast method using automated online solid-phase extraction (SPE) coupled to liquid-chromatography/high resolution mass spectrometric (LC-HRMS) detection for the determination of 12 mycotoxins in beer was developed and fully validated according to the performance criteria set in the European Union (EU) guidelines. Mycotoxin detection was achieved by full-scan HRMS with electrospray ionisation in positive ion mode within 13 min. No significant matrix interferences were observed. Mycotoxins in cereals and pulses harvested in Latvia by nanoLC-Orbitrap MS

Twenty-seven mycotoxins in unprocessed cereals (n = 110) and pulses (n = 23) harvested in Latvia were analysed by nanoflow liquid chromatography combined with Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry. One or more mycotoxins were found in 99% of the cereals and 78% of the pulses. Deoxynivalenol, zearalenone and T-2 and HT-2 toxins were prevalent in 9 to 86% of the cereals, mostly below their maximum levels as set by the European regulations. Non-regulated type A and B trichothecenes were prevalent in 5 to 87% of the cereals, at concentrations of 0.27–83 µg kg−1 and 1.7–4,781 µg kg−1, respectively.
