Dietary Fatty Acids in Metabolic Syndrome, Diabetes and Cardiovascular Diseases

2011

In the last few decades, the prevalence of overweight and essential obesity has been undergoing a fast and progressive worldwide increase. Obesity has been in turn linked to type II diabetes, with the total number of diabetic patients worryingly increasing, in the last fifteen years, suggesting a pandemic phenomenon. At the same time, an increase in the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases has been also recorded. Increasing evidence suggests that the diet is involved in such escalation. In particular, the progressive globalization of food industry allowed massive supply, at a relatively low price, of a great variety of pre-packed food and bakery products, with very high energy content. Mos…

2015

Additive Manufacturing of Multi‐Scale Porous Soft Tissue Implants That Encourage Vascularization and Tissue Ingrowth

2021

Medical devices, such as silicone-based prostheses designed for soft tissue implantation, often induce a suboptimal foreign-body response which results in a hardened avascular fibrotic capsule around the device, often leading to patient discomfort or implant failure. Here, it is proposed that additive manufacturing techniques can be used to deposit durable coatings with multiscale porosity on soft tissue implant surfaces to promote optimal tissue integration. Specifically, the “liquid rope coil effect”, is exploited via direct ink writing, to create a controlled macro open-pore architecture, including over highly curved surfaces, while adapting atomizing spray deposition of a silicone ink t…

Infrared microspectroscopy of biochemical response of living cells in microfabricated devices

2010

Abstract First experiments demonstrating the suitability of novel microfabricated fluidic devices for measuring living cells in physiological environment by synchrotron radiation (SR) Fourier Transform Infrared microspectroscopy (μ-FTIR) are presented. The devices were fabricated on CaF 2 windows, using the photoresist XARP 3100/10 to define the liquid cell lay-out. Therefore, the sample holder is transparent to both visible and infrared light, robust, completely recyclable and with a precise spacing. Using prototype devices of thicknesses 9, 5 and 3 μm, we studied the response of the U937 monocytic cell line to mechanical compression. The temporal evolution of the FTIR spectra, characteris…

Microbiological Profile and Bioactive Properties of Insect Powders Used in Food and Feed Formulations

2019

Microbiological, nutritional and bioactive properties of edible powders obtained from Acheta domesticus (house cricket) and Tenebrio molitor (mealworm) were investigated. Except for the enterobacteria, viable bacteria were at a higher concentration in mealworm flour. The diversity evaluation carried out using MiSeq Illumina that mainly identified Citrobacter and Enterobacteriaceae in mealworm powder and members of the Porphyromonadaceae family in house cricket powder. Enterococci were identified and characterized for their safety characteristics in terms of the absence of antibiotic resistance and virulence. Both powders represent a good source of proteins and lipids. The fatty acid profile…

Biomarkers for diagnosing sepsis in the emergency department: A consensus document by SIBioC-Medicina di Laboratorio and the Academy of Emergency Med…

2018

This article is drafted as a consensus document involving eight members of the Italian Society of Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine (SIBioC) and eight members of the Academy of Emergency Medicine and Care (AcEMC), to whom a questionnaire was submitted for obtaining opinions on some recommendations about the use of biomarkers for diagnosing sepsis and managing antibiotic therapy in the emergency department. These recommendations were drafted following the National Guidelines Program (PNLG). According to the cumulative consent, three "A" recommendations (strongly recommended indication) emerged, which include biomarker availability (always available on prescription), clinical use …

Therapeutic monitoring of autoantibodies Tumor Necrosis Factor α inhibitor drugs: Efficacy and benefit for patients with autoimmune diseases

2018

Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) is a proinflammatory cytokine involved in the pathogenesis of chronic inflammatory disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Chron's disease and ulcerative colitis. TNFα inhibitors (anti-TNFα) are monoclonal antibodies drugs directed against TNFα (i.e. adalimumab, infliximab, etarnecept, golimumab and certolizumab). Their effect consists in reducing the inflammatory response of autoimmune diseases. Several randomized controlled trials and observational studies evaluated the therapeutic efficacy of these drugs and reported a clear benefit for patients affected by chronic inflammatory disease treated with anti-TNFα, …

Esami di laboratorio in Pronto Soccorso: una proposta di consenso SIBioCMedicina di Laboratorio e Academy of Emergency Medicine and Care

2017

Laboratory diagnostics in the emergency setting encompasses the identification of appropriate testing according to specific acute conditions. Since the pathway of ordering tests in the Italian Emergency Departments (EDs) is rather heterogeneous, SIBioC-Medicina di Laboratorio and the Academy of Emergency Medicine and Care designed a survey aimed to generate consensus pertaining to appropriate laboratory tests in most frequent acute conditions. A questionnaire including a panel of laboratory tests was administered to 8 representative members of each of the two societies, who were asked to provide a score between 1 and 3 for the various tests, where a score of 1 entailed "highly recommended",…

Identificazionee caratterizzazione di mutazioni in regioni regolatorie del gene malattia della fibrosi cistica

2013

Mutation epidemiology is crucial for cystic fibrosis (CF) diagnosis and counselling. ~6%-7% of alleles from CF patients do not bear mutations in the coding regions of the Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Regulator (CFTR) disease gene. In these patients, mutations may be present in non-coding, regulatory regions of the gene as i) intronic regions (particularly in high conserved sequences), ii) the promoter region or iii) the area at the 3’ of the gene, which is the target of microRNA regulation. We studied these regions by gene sequencing in a group of CF patients with one or both unidentified mutations after the analysis of CFTR coding regions, and in a group of CF patients with a different cl…

Acute troponin i increase in absence of obstructive coronary disease: A case of takotsubo syndrome

2017

A 66-year-old woman was admitted to the Emergency Department of Policlinico P. Giaccone, in Palermo, for non-radiating chest pain that occurred after an emotional stress. Her medical history included a positive family history for cardiovascular disease, arterial hypertension, gastro-esophageal reflux disease, and anxiety-depressive syndrome. Upon admission, the electrocardiogram showed diffuse ST-T abnormalities with an elevation of the ST segment; Troponin I was 3790 ng/L, creatine phosphokinase was 374 U/L, which became normal within 48 hours. No evidence of significant coronary artery stenosis was detected on the angiography. The echocardiogram showed apical akinesia and hyperkinesia of …
