ESP

The “manna” extracted from the ash trees still cultivated in Sicily from mythical food to pharmaceutical and nutraceutical resource

2022

“Manna” is the product obtained from the solidification of the elaborate sap that comes out of the incisions made during the summer season on the stem and on the main branches of some species of the genus Fraxinus (Oleaceae). The cultivation of manna ash trees dates back to ancient times in Sicily and elsewhere ash trees – known as sacred trees, a symbol of abundance and therefore auspicious – was increasingly widespread until the middle of the last century. Subsequently, however, the crop underwent a progressive decline, remaining relegated to restricted areas of Sicily, in particular in the Madonie district (Palermo, Italy). In this brief review, the essential characteristics of the manna…

EFFECT OF Γ-AMINOBUTYRRIC ACID (GABA) EXPOSURE ON EMBRYOGENESIS OF PARACENTROTUS LIVIDUS AND IDENTIFICATION OF GABA-RECEPTOR GENES IN SEA URCHINS

2015

Developmental processes are controlled by regulatory genes encoding for transcription factors and signaling molecules. Functional relationships between these genes are described by gene regulatory networks (GRN), models which allow integration of various levels of information. The sea urchin embryo is an experimental model system which offers many advantages for the analysis of GRN. Recently, the GRN that governs the biomineralization of the sea urchin embryonic skeleton has begun to be deciphered. Preliminary evidence suggest that the γ- aminobutyric acid (GABA) signaling pathway is involved in skeletal morphogenesis during development of the sea urchin. GABA is a molecule synthesized by n…

Age-related differences of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic transmission in human colonic smooth muscle.

2021

Background: Enteric neurons undergo to functional changes during aging. We investigated the possible age-associated differences in enteric γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic transmission evaluating function and distribution of GABAergic receptors in human colon. Methods: Mechanical responses to GABA and GABA receptor agonists on slow phasic contractions were examined in vitro as changes in isometric tension in colonic muscle strips from young (<65 years old) and aged patients (>65 years old). GABAergic receptor expression was assessed by quantitative RT-PCR. Key Results: In both preparations GABA induced an excitatory effect, consisting in an increase in the basal tone, antagonized by th…

ANALISI FUNZIONALE DI GENI REGOLATORI DELLO SVILUPPO EMBRIONALE DI PARACENTROTUS LIVIDUS

2012

C7(P32) and C6(P34) PR proteins induced in tomato leaves by citrus exocortis viroid infection are chitinases

1990

[EN] Two chitinases induced in tomato leaves (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill cv. Rutgers) by citrus exocortis viroid (CEV) infection were purified. Their molecular masses determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-gel electrophoresis were 32 kDa and 34 kDa and by filtration through Sephadex G-100 were 23 kDa and 25 kDa, respectively. These chitinases (P32 and P34) have been shown to be identical to the tomato pathogenesis-related proteins C7 and C6. They were purified in three stages: ammonium sulphate fractionation, chitin affinity chromatography and CM-Sepharose chromatography. The characterization of P32, the major component of the CEV-induced chitinase activity, revealed a basic protein (pI, 8·…

Metallothionein family in sea urchin: Genes and their expression during embryo development and following exposure to stressors

2017

Echinoderms represent a very fascinating phylum belonging to deuterostome superphylum, including also hemichordates, tunicates and vertebrates. Among echinoderms, sea urchin species are studied worldwide as excellent model organisms for the study of developmental biology, and are suitable as bioindicators. During a study on the defense strategies activated by Paracentrotus lividus sea urchin embryos in response to CdCl2, we isolated five metallothionein (MT) cDNAs. Two of the five MT genes were constitutively expressed, whereas the other three genes appear to be specifically switched-on in response to cadmium treatment. With the aim of better understanding the evolutionary relationships, fu…

The “Janus” Role of C/EBPs Family Members in Cancer Progression

2020

CCAAT/enhancer-binding proteins (C/EBPs) constitute a family of transcription factors composed of six members that are critical for normal cellular differentiation in a variety of tissues. They promote the expression of genes through interaction with their promoters. Moreover, they have a key role in regulating cellular proliferation through interaction with cell cycle proteins. C/EBPs are considered to be tumor suppressor factors due to their ability to arrest cell growth (contributing to the terminal differentiation of several cell types) and for their role in cellular response to DNA damage, nutrient deprivation, hypoxia, and genotoxic agents. However, C/EBPs can elicit completely opposi…
