Optimal control in models with conductive‐radiative heat transfer

In this paper an optimal control problem for the elliptic boundary value problem with nonlocal boundary conditions is considered. It is shown that the weak solutions of the boundary value problem depend smoothly on the control parameter and that the cost functional of the optimal control problem is Frechet differentiable with respect to the control parameter. End-Triassic Extinction in a Carbonate Platform From Western Tethys: A Comparison Between Extinction Trends and Geochemical Variations

The Triassic/Jurassic boundary section cropping out at Mt Sparagio in north-western Sicily (Italy) consists of a thick and continuous peritidal succession typical of a Tethyan carbonate platform. The combined chemostratigraphic and biostratigraphic study of this section allowed us to parallel the environmental variations inferred by the isotopic records and the extinction trends recorded by the benthic organisms. A fast hierarchical dual boundary element method for three-dimensional elastodynamic crack problems

In this work a fast solver for large-scale three-dimensional elastodynamic crack problems is presented, implemented, and tested. The dual boundary element method in the Laplace transform domain is used for the accurate dynamic analysis of cracked bodies. In the present paper a fast solver for dual boundary element analysis of 3D anisotropic crack problems is formulated, implemented and tested. The fast solver is based on the use of hierarchical matrices for the representation of the collocation matrix. The admissible low rank blocks are computed by adaptive cross approximation (ACA). Finite element approximation for a div-rot system with mixed boundary conditions in non-smooth plane domains

The authors examine a finite element method for the numerical approximation of the solution to a div-rot system with mixed boundary conditions in bounded plane domains with piecewise smooth boundary. The solvability of the system both in an infinite and finite dimensional formulation is proved. Piecewise linear element fields with pointwise boundary conditions are used and their approximation properties are studied. On FE-grid relocation in solving unilateral boundary value problems by FEM

We consider FE-grid optimization in elliptic unilateral boundary value problems. The criterion used in grid optimization is the total potential energy of the system. It is shown that minimization of this cost functional means a decrease of the discretization error or a better approximation of the unilateral boundary conditions, Design sensitivity analysis is given with respect to the movement of nodal points. Numerical results for the Dirichlet-Signorini problem for the Laplace equation and the plane elasticity problem with unilateral boundary conditions are given. A fast Fourier transform based direct solver for the Helmholtz problem

This article is devoted to the efficient numerical solution of the Helmholtz equation in a two‐ or three‐dimensional (2D or 3D) rectangular domain with an absorbing boundary condition (ABC). The Helmholtz problem is discretized by standard bilinear and trilinear finite elements on an orthogonal mesh yielding a separable system of linear equations. The main key to high performance is to employ the fast Fourier transform (FFT) within a fast direct solver to solve the large separable systems. Spherical harmonic expansion of fundamental solutions and their derivatives for homogenous elliptic operators

In this work, a unified scheme for computing the fundamental solutions of a three-dimensional homogeneous elliptic partial differential operator is presented. The scheme is based on the Rayleigh expansion and on the Fourier representation of a homogeneous function. The scheme has the advantage of expressing the fundamental solutions and their derivatives up to the desired order without any term-by-term differentiation. Grain boundary ridges slow dawn grain boundary motion: In-situ observation

Abstract The impact of grain boundary (GB) ridge on motion of high-angle GB in Zn was studied. The steady-state motion of faceted GB half-loop with [ 10 1 ¯ 0 ] tilt GB and GB ridge was recorded in-situ. The temperatures of faceting–roughening transition were experimentally defined for three GB half-loops. Above the transition temperature GB half-loops had GB “rough-to-rough” ridge with continuously curved GB segments. Below the transition temperature a facet appeared and coexisted with two “facet-to-rough” ridges. [1] Earth’s lithosphere is characterized by the relative movement of almost rigid plates as part of global mantle convection. Subduction zones on present-day Earth are strongly asymmetric features composed of an overriding plate above a subducting plate that sinks into the mantle. While global self-consistent numerical models of mantle convection have reproduced some aspects of plate tectonics, the assumptions behind these models do not allow for realistic single-sided subduction.
