A mathematical approach to model diffusion properties of sedimentary rocks relevant to Sicily cultural heritage
2007
Cultural heritage vestiges represent complex physical systems, able to interact with the environment through continuous exchanges of heat and fluids (water, air). In this wide context, particular relevance is assumed by transport phenomena and diffusion of pollutant, vehiculated inside the considered structure by water itself. Interaction mechanisms can be considered at various observation scales, depending on the material provenance and on its geometry and location. Involved materials are commonly constituted by porous rocks - more or less altered - belonging to geological sedimentary formations, as limestone, calcarenite and travertine. Their appreciable porosity affects significantly liq…
2007
This study aim to improve knowledge about individual and contextual factors of success in music education during elementary level's first year. There are three main subjects : acquisitions' social inequalities, teacher-effect and children' interest about in class musical activities. Two musical tests (one at the beginning of the year, another at the end) were administrated to 1184 students living in Burgondy. Questionnaries completed by various actors (teachers and students) gave a lot of data. Data were analysed with multivariate models. Our results demonstrated that 1°) musical practices develop abilities and explain social origin's effect on musical acquisitions at the beginning of the y…
Quando i corpi svelano lo spazio
2020
Living means transfiguring the place and loading it with meanings that transcend its pure objectivity, allowing our body to feel itself among "its things", close to itself. The path of "transfiguration" inherent in living interprets the complementarity between man and his environment and reveals the poetic capacity of architecture. Thus, it may be interesting to understand how the interaction between body and space can make us regain possession of the most problematic places, within a mental and transcendent dimension.
ON THE CALCULATION OF THE HEAT CAPACITY IN PATH INTEGRAL MONTE CARLO SIMULATIONS
1992
In Path Integral Monte Carlo simulations the systems partition function is mapped to an equivalent classical one at the expense of a temperature-dependent Hamiltonian with an additional imaginary time dimension. As a consequence the standard relation linking the heat capacity Cv to the energy fluctuations, <E2>−<E>2, which is useful in standard classical problems with temperature-independent Hamiltonian, becomes invalid. Instead, it gets replaced by the general relation [Formula: see text] for the intensive heat capacity estimator; β being the inverse temperature and the subscript P indicates the P-fold discretization in the imaginary time direction. This heatcapacity estimator…

Absorptive Capacity and Social Capital: Innovation and Environmental Regulation
2010
Norwegian paper and pulp mills are subject to strict environmental regulation. The mills conduct research and development for reducing pollution. Absorptive capacity indicates their competence. Firms are part of a social network of connections with external actors that include other paper and pulp mills, suppliers, customers, research institutes, and universities that help them in developing technologies. These relations represent their social capital. Some firms have access to more and better resources than other firms. Measuring firms’ absorptive capacity and access to social capital, we analyze their success in reducing pollution levels. There is a strong interaction effect between absor…
Abusivismo e capitale sociale

Unauthorized building is mostly concentrated in the southern regions of Italy and regards every social class. It often involves political interests at election times. Due to the distinctiveness of its distribution on the Italian territory, unauthorised building raises complex issues of a sociological, anthropological, political and legal nature concerning public spirit, the relationship that the citizen has with institutions and with lawfulness, the means through which political consensus is aggregated, and the capacity of the state to ensure governance through laws. Agrigento is an emblematic case, not only because of the diffusion of the phenomenon over time and space, or for the relevanc…
