Boreal fishes and ultraviolet radiation : actions of UVR at molecular and individual levels
2005
Eeva-Riikka Vehniäinen on väitöskirjatyössään tutkinut UV-säteilyn vaikutuksia siian, hauen ja muikun poikasissa. Ihmisen aiheuttama otsonikerroksen ohentuminen on lisännyt maan pinnalle saapuvan ultravioletti-B-säteilyn (UVB) määrää viime vuosikymmenten aikana, ja lisääntymisen odotetaan jatkuvan vielä noin 2050-luvulle saakka. UVB-säteily on haitallista eliöille, koska se aiheuttaa vaurioita solun keskeisissä rakenteissa: DNA:ssa, proteiineissa ja lipideissä.Vehniäinen arvioi lisääntyvän UVB-säteilyn aiheuttamaa riskiä taloudellisesti ja ekologisesti tärkeille makeanveden kalalajeillemme, siialle, muikulle ja hauelle, niiden herkimmässä elämänvaiheessa välittömästi kuoriutumisen jälkeen. …
Surveillance of spontaneous breast cancer metastasis by TRAIL-expressing CD34⁺ cells in a xenograft model
2012
Tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), delivered as a membrane-bound molecule expressed on the surface of adenovirus-transduced CD34+ cells (CD34-TRAIL+), was analyzed for its apoptotic activity in vitro on 12 breast cancer cell lines representing estrogen receptor-positive, HER2+ and triple-negative (TN) subtypes and for its effect on tumor growth, vascularization, necrosis, and lung metastasis incidence in NOD/SCID mice xenografted with the TN breast cancer line MDA-MB-231. Mesenchymal TN cell lines, which are the richest in putative tumor stem cells among the different breast cancer cell subtypes, were the most susceptible to apoptosis induced by CD34-TRAIL+ cel…
Pili Annulati Coincident with Alopecia Areata, Autoimmune Thyroid Disease, and Primary IgA Deficiency: Case Report and Considerations on the Literatu…
2012
Pili annulati is a rare autosomal dominant hair disorder clinically characterized by a pattern of alternating bright and dark bands of the hair, the bright bands appearing dark if observed by transmitted light. This pattern is due to the periodic occurrence of air-filled cavities along the hair cortex which scatter and reflect the light while precluding its transmission. A susceptibility region, including a possibly responsible Frizzled gene, has been mapped to the telomeric region of chromosome 12q, although a specific mutation has not been identified. The condition has sometimes been observed in concurrence with alopecia areata, and in this paper we report a case in whom the concomitant s…
Interstitielle Nephritis bei atypischer Manifestation eines Sjgren's Syndrom
1980
A patient was observed with interstitial nephritis which resulted in renal tubular acidosis (distal type), tubular proteinuria and defective urinary concentrating ability in the absence of edema, elevated arterial blood pressure, glomerular proteinuria or abnormal urinary sediment. The presence of interstitial nephritis was established by renal biopsy which showed dense infiltrates in the interstitium, interstitial fibrosis and thickening and splitting of the pericapillary basal membranes. Immunofluorescence was non contributory. Extrarenal symptoms were discrete (arthralgia of both hands, Raynaud's syndrome upon cold exposure). Mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) was suspected because o…
Ductal Carcinoma In Situ of the Breast: A Comparative Analysis of Histology, Nuclear Area, Ploidy, and Neovascularization Provides Differentiation Be…
2002
Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is a heterogeneous group of lesions that has been subdivided into three types: well differentiated (grade I), moderately differentiated (grade II), and poorly differentiated (grade III). Forty-five cases of DCIS were analyzed for image analysis: nuclear area, DNA ploidy, and vascularization in order to establish a more precise correlation between the histologic grade and these morphometric parameters. Our results confirm that the mean nuclear area, DNA ploidy, and microvessel density (MVD) progressively increased from DCIS grade I to DCIS grade III. The analysis of the nuclear area in relationship to DCIS grading demonstrated a progressive increase of values …
Dermoscopy of a Spark’s Nevus
2018
Spark's nevus is a particular type of melanocytic nevus that on histology shows features of both Spitz's and Clark's nevus. Clinically, it is an asymmetric, irregular, multicolored, pigmented lesion that is not clearly distinguishable from melanoma or dysplastic (Clark's) nevus. Dermoscopic features have not been described yet, and one could speculate that they are similar to those of Clark's nevi because the histopathologic architecture of Spark's nevus is similar to that of a Clark's nevus, resembling Spitz's nevi in the epithelioid morphology of melanocytes. We present a 32-year-old woman with a Spark's nevus, who upon dermoscopy showed a pronounced atypical network with accentuation of …
CD1a down-regulation in primary invasive ductal breast carcinoma may predict regional lymph node invasion and patient outcome
2007
Aims: CD1a is a molecule belonging to the highlyconserved group of CD1 proteins. Its expression indendritic cells is related to the presentation of tumour-derived glycolipid antigens to T cells and, consequently, the development of a successful antitumour response. The aim was to investigate the presence of CD1a+ cellsin both primary tumours and lymph nodes (LN) ofa series of 35 invasive ductal carcinomas by bothimmunohistochemistry and reverse transcription-poly-merase chain reaction. Methods and results: CD1a antigen was more expressedin N0 than N1 breast cancer (P < 0.0001) in bothprimary lesions and LN metastases and correlatedpositively and significantly with oestrogen (ER) (P =0.0025) and…
Cytokeratin 8 immunostaining pattern and E-cadherin expression distinguish lobular from ductal breast carcinoma.
2000
Immunohistochemistry using antibodies to cytokeratin 8 can serve as a valuable diagnostic tool for the differentiation of lobular from ductal carcinomas of the breast. In contrast with ductal carcinomas, which exhibit a peripheral-predominant immunostaining pattern, adjacent tumor cells “molding” to each other, lobular carcinomas exhibit a ring-like perinuclear immunostaining pattern, creating a “bag of marbles” appearance with neighboring tumor cells. This immunostaining pattern is stable even in the tumors that otherwise do not exhibit characteristic histomorphologic features (ie, solid or pleomorphic type of a lobular carcinoma) and tumors that mimic growth patterns characteristic of the…
