HIGH PROPORTION OF DEMENTIA WITH LEWY BODIES IN THE POSTMORTEMS OF A MENTAL HOSPITAL IN GERMANY

1997

Objective. Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is under-recognized in Germany. No data on the number of patients suffering from this condition in Germany are available at present. We were interested in the proportion of DLB in the postmortems of demented inpatients in the care of a psychogeriatric service. Design. In a retrospective study we examined consecutive postmortems of inpatients who died in one mental hospital. Setting. A suburban and rural old age psychiatry service in Germany. Patients. 103 consecutive postmortems had been performed from 9/1987 to 6/1995. Fifty-nine (57.3%) of all cases warranted the clinical diagnosis of dementia (DSM-III-R). Measures. The causes of dementia were ex…

Nutritional supplements for neuropsychiatric symptoms in people with dementia: A systematic review and meta-analysis

2020

The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of nutritional supplementation on neuropsychiatric symptoms among people with dementia. Methods/Design: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were searched in the Databases PubMed, EMBASE, SCOPUS, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Clinicaltrials.gov from inception until January 31, 2020. Studies of RCTs carried out on people with any type of dementia who were taking nutritional supplements and had neuropsychiatric symptoms were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Screening for Cognitive Impairment in Hospitalized Older Patients

2021

Abstract. This study develops a screening method for older patients based on nursing procedure to predict complications associated with cognitive impairment during a hospital stay. This multicenter diagnostic cohort study among older hospitalized patients was carried out in eight primary-care hospitals. Following admission of the patients, trained nurses conducted a structured interview and the Mini-Cog as gold standard for cognitive status; complications during the hospital stay were also monitored. In a second step, the structured interview combined with the Mini-Cog revealed whether there was any abnormality in the interview, making it possible to validly and reliably as well as sensiti…

Oral microcirculation in post-menopause: a possible correlation with periodontitis

2011

doi: 10.1111/j.1741-2358.2011.00608.x Oral microcirculation in post-menopause: a possible correlation with periodontitis Objectives:  The reduction in the level of oestrogen, typical in menopause, has some effect on the health of the oral cavity. In fact, post-menopausal women present more severe periodontal disease than pre-menopausal women. Numerous factors can be held to be responsible for this increase, among which are the effects of oestrogens on the oral epithelium, on the salivary glands, on bone tissue and on the endothelium. Our double blind study aims to evaluate the possible variations in oral microcirculation in post-menopausal women. Methods:  Twenty-seven women in post-menopau…

Family Caregivers' Experiences in Nursing Homes: Narratives on Human Dignity and Uneasiness

2013

This qualitative study focused on dignity in nursing homes from the perspective of family caregivers. Dignity is a complex concept and central to nursing. Dignity in nursing homes is a challenge, according to research. Family caregivers are frequently involved in their family members’ daily experiences at the nursing home. Twenty-eight family caregivers were included in this Scandinavian cross-country, descriptive, and explorative study. A phenomenological-hermeneutic approach was used to understand the meaning of the narrated text. The interpretations revealed two main themes: “One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself” and “Uneasiness due to indignity.” Dignity wa…

The Teacher's Perspective in Older Education: The Experience of Teaching in a University for Older People in Spain

2010

The aim of this study was to explore university lecturers' descriptions of their teaching experience with older students. Twelve teachers of the Nau Gran (a university program for older people [UPOP] in Valencia, Spain) were interviewed. We analyzed their responses to questions about their experience of teaching older adults, the rewarding aspects of that experience and the teaching strategies they used. Teachers described their experience as extremely positive and rewarding, and often contrasted the active, interested, and grateful older students with the relatively passive regular younger students. The teachers also mentioned how they adapted their teaching to suit a more motivated and pa…
