The 1946 Production of The Fairy Queen in Covent Garden: 'A Triumph of British Music and Stagecraft'?

2006

This article examines the sets designed by John Piper for eight of Benjamin Britten's operas in the context of England's artistic and political post-war reconstruction. Piper created backdrops that found their logical conclusion in his stained-glass windows. They provide a sense of continuity whilst reflecting fundamental contradictions.

Postfazione

2021

The graphic analysis, as Giuseppe Pagnano stated with great clarity in 1975, allows us to fully explore aspects that verbal language can only touch; it does not make us re-discover the rules of architecture but, as every critical operation, makes us understand which rules the architect used and above all it makes us understand why he formulated certain solutions rather than others. Therefore, investigating architecture with drawing not only means using the language used to design it but also using a privileged access key for understanding the shape. Graphic analysis, therefore, is a useful ‘tool’ for architectural criticism and the history of architecture because it contributes to the knowl…

Imagery and Religious Conversion. The Symbolic Function of Jonah 1:13

2018

Jonah 1:13 has a delaying function in the narrative, introducing a pause between Jonah’s demand to be thrown in the sea (1:12) and the event’s occurrence (1:15). Most commentators discuss only the events of 1:13 and their causes. In this article, I suggest an interpretation of Jonah 1:13 based on the imagery of the narrative. An analysis of the use of metaphors and symbols does not replace the message of the verse; such an analysis simply augments it with motives of the seamen’s conversion. Beside the narrative level, there is a hidden level suggesting a deeper understanding of the story where symbols and metaphors have a consolidating function. Distance, directions, and movement in Jonah 1…

The Relocation of the Canons Regular Monastery in Żagań as an Element in the Reform of Interior Life

2019

The location in which a church was based played an important role in the life of religious communities in the Middle Ages. Interactions with society and the mutual influence of a monastery on the surrounding societies could support or inhibit the development of an abbey. There were situations when monks were moved to serve in different locations. In Silesia, we have two examples of canons regular monasteries. Both the monastery of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Wrocław and the convent of Żagań were originally located in other places. As described in the monastery chronicle, the transfer of the monastery from Nowogród Bobrzański to Żagań in 1284 was an event that opened new opportunities and per…

Coordinating action in technology-supported shared tasks: Virtual pointing as a situated practice for mobilizing a response

2021

Drawing on recordings of remote screen-based work meetings in Finland, this conversation analytic study investigates interactive properties of mouse cursor movements in technology-mediated shared tasks. The article illustrates how participants rely on features afforded by the input device in ways that divert from its pre-designed functions to accomplish virtual pointing gestures. These gestures serve as an organizational resource in the precursory phase of action, i.e. when a next on-screen action is observably made relevant. In this sequential environment, pointing by means of the tool is a collaborative resource: an embodied practice for sustaining co-orientation and advancing the sequent…
