Serine in plants: biosynthesis, metabolism, and functions
2014
Serine (Ser) has a fundamental role in metabolism and signaling in living organisms. In plants, the existence of different pathways of Ser biosynthesis has complicated our understanding of this amino acid homeostasis. The photorespiratory glycolate pathway has been considered to be of major importance, whereas the nonphotorespiratory phosphorylated pathway has been relatively neglected. Recent advances indicate that the phosphorylated pathway has an important function in plant metabolism and development. Plants deficient in this pathway display developmental defects in embryos, male gametophytes, and roots. We propose that the phosphorylated pathway is more important than was initially thou…
Current insights into neutrophil homeostasis
2012
Neutrophil granulocytes represent the first immunologic barrier against invading pathogens, and neutropenia predisposes to infection. However, neutrophils may also cause significant collateral inflammatory damage. Therefore, neutrophil numbers are tightly regulated by an incompletely understood homeostatic feedback loop adjusting the marrow's supply to peripheral needs. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is accepted to be the major determinant of neutrophil production, and G-CSF levels have, soon after its discovery, been described to be inversely correlated with neutrophil counts. A neutrophil sensor, or "neutrostat," has, therefore, been postulated. The prevailing feedback hypo…
De novo t(12;17)(p13.3;q21.3) translocation with a breakpoint near the 5' end of the HOXB gene cluster in a patient with developmental delay and skel…
2007
A boy with severe mental retardation, funnel chest, bell-shaped thorax, and hexadactyly of both feet was found to have a balanced de novo t(12;17)(p13.3;q21.3) translocation. FISH with BAC clones and long-range PCR products assessed in the human genome sequence localized the breakpoint on chromosome 17q21.3 to a 21-kb segment that lies <30 kb upstream of the HOXB gene cluster and immediately adjacent to the 3′ end of the TTLL6 gene. The breakpoint on chromosome 12 occurred within telomeric hexamer repeats and, therefore, is not likely to affect gene function directly. We propose that juxtaposition of the HOXB cluster to a repetitive DNA domain and/or separation from required cis-regulatory …
Gene expression during early embryogenesis of sea urchin: The histone and homeobox genes
1997
Transcriptional regulators are thought to play a key role in cell fate determination and territorial specification in sea urchin. Our goals are to clone transcription factors for studying embryonic development. One approach has been to use promoter binding and gene transfer technology to investigate the mechanisms of transcriptional activation and repression of the early H2A histone gene. By this analysis we identified a transcriptional activator, the MBF-1, that binds to the modulator element of the H2A gene and enhances the activity of the H2A promoter. However, the enhancer activity of the modulator and its interaction with MBF-1 also occurs at the gastrula stage when the early histone g…
Solving stochastic differential equations on Homeo(S1)
2004
Abstract The Brownian motion with respect to the metric H 3/2 on Diff( S 1 ) has been constructed. It is realized on the group of homeomorphisms Homeo( S 1 ). In this work, we shall resolve the stochastic differential equations on Homeo( S 1 ) for a given drift Z .
Kotona asuvan muistisairaan henkilön ja hänen läheistensä teknologiaan liittyvät tarpeet ja toiveet
2018
Homeless Adults' Recovery Experiences in Housing First and Traditional Services Programs in Seven European Countries.
2020
Across Europe, as governments turn to housing-led strategies in attempts to reverse rising rates of homelessness, increasing numbers of Housing First (HF) programs are being implemented. As HF programs become more widespread, it is important to understand how service users experience them compared to the more prevalent traditional treatment-first approach to addressing long-term homelessness. Although there is a large body of research on service users' experiences of Housing First compared to treatment-first in North American contexts, comparatively less is known about how these two categories of homeless services are experienced in the European context. In a correlational and cross-section…
Effect of diet composition on acid–base balance in adolescents, young adults and elderly at rest and during exercise
2014
Diets rich in animal protein and cereal grains and deficient in vegetables and fruits may cause low-grade metabolic acidosis, which may impact exercise and health. We hypothesized that (1) a normal-protein diet with high amount of vegetables and fruits (HV) induces more alkaline acid-base balance compared with a high-protein diet with no vegetables and fruits (HP) and (2) diet composition has a greater impact on acid-base balance in the elderly (ELD).In all, 12-15 (adolescents (ADO)), 25-35 (young adults (YAD)) and 60-75 (ELD)-year-old male and female subjects (n=88) followed a 7-day HV and a 7-day HP in a randomized order and at the end performed incremental cycle ergometer tests. We inves…
Preference for place of death in Germany.
2011
Dying in the preferred place is considered a key requirement for a "good death." The aims of our study were to explore preferred places of death of deceased people and their bereaved relatives in Rhineland-Palatinate (Germany). We further wanted to assess the congruence between preferred and actual place of death. The cross-sectional study was based on a random sample of 5000 inhabitants of Rhineland-Palatinate (Germany) who died between May 25 and August 24, 2008. Relatives of these deceased persons were interviewed by a written survey. After removing duplicates, 4967 questionnaires were sent out, 3832 delivered, and 1378 completed, yielding a response rate of 36.0%. Regarding the deceased, …
