Alix protein is substrate of Ozz-E3 ligase and modulates actin remodeling in skeletal muscle

2012

Alix/AIP1 is a multifunctional adaptor protein that participates in basic cellular processes, including membrane trafficking and actin cytoskeleton assembly, by binding selectively to a variety of partner proteins. However, the mechanisms regulating Alix turnover, subcellular distribution, and function in muscle cells are unknown. We now report that Alix is expressed in skeletal muscle throughout myogenic differentiation. In myotubes, a specific pool of Alix colocalizes with Ozz, the substrate-binding component of the muscle-specific ubiquitin ligase complex Ozz-E3. We found that interaction of the two endogenous proteins in the differentiated muscle fibers changes Alix conformation and pro…

Embedding the Remote Application Control: Visual API for PDA Programming

2009

PDAs are more and more used as advanced adaptive HEI (human-environment interaction) interfaces, thus enabling their users to easily operate applications remotely running in pervasive computing scenarios. Based on a previous implementation, in this paper we discuss the development of a new set of .NET-compliant Application Programming Interfaces to be used within the Visual Studio IDE. Our main goal is to provide programmers with a set of components to be used with the common drag-and-drop operation, in order to embed a remote application control within an application running on the PDA and vice-versa. The interaction relies on ad-hoc communication protocols over a framework devoted to pair…

Interacting with Augmented Environments

2010

Pervasive systems augment environments by integrating information processing into everyday objects and activities. They consist of two parts: a visible part populated by animate (visitors, operators) or inanimate (AI) entities interacting with the environment through digital devices, and an invisible part composed of software objects performing specific tasks in an underlying framework. This paper shows an ongoing work from the University of Palermo''s Department of Computer Science and Engineering that addresses two issues related to simplifying and broadening augmented environment access.

Mobile agents and knowledge discovery in ubiquitous computing

2004

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses a knowledge discovery strategy to be performed by mobile agents in an augmented reality (AR) scenario. AR entities are implemented by mobile agents who perform all the behaviors of cooperating entities. Among other tasks, mobile agents implement a resource discovery strategy, which is aimed at filling lacking entities with missing methods and knowledge rules. A three layer entity description model and a cooperation mechanism are discussed, which allow knowledge and methods to be shared between entities in augmented reality. Three layers host three different projection descriptions of an AR entity respectively are: (1) a semantic projection for knowle…

Analysis of the Biological Response of Endothelial and Fibroblast Cells Cultured on Synthetic Scaffolds with Various Hydrophilic/Hydrophobic Ratios: …

2009

In this study we developed polymer scaffolds intended as anchorage rings for cornea prostheses among other applications, and examined their cell compatibility. In particular, a series of interconnected porous polymer scaffolds with pore sizes from 80 to 110 microns were manufactured varying the ratio of hydrophobic to hydrophilic monomeric units along the polymer chains. Further, the effects of fibronectin precoating, a physiological adhesion molecule, were tested. The interactions between the normal human fibroblast cell line MRC-5 and primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) with the scaffold surfaces were evaluated. Adhesion and growth of the cells was examined by confocal…

Developing Self-Awareness in Robots via Inner Speech

2019

The experience of inner speech is a common one. Such a dialogue accompanies the introspection of mental life and fulfills essential roles in human behavior, such as self-restructuring, self-regulation, and re-focusing on attentional resources. Although the underpinning of inner speech is mostly investigated in psychological and philosophical fields, the research in robotics generally does not address such a form of self-aware behavior. Existing models of inner speech inspire computational tools to provide a robot with this form of self-awareness. Here, the widespread psychological models of inner speech are reviewed, and a cognitive architecture for a robot implementing such a capability is…

Maxwell-Dirac Theory and Occam's Razor: Unified Field, Elementary Particles, and Nuclear Interactions

2019

We introduce and use the space-time Clifford algebra, showing that only one fundamental physical entity is sufficient to describe the origin of electromagnetic fields, charges and currents: the electromagnetic four-potential. This simplified electromagnetic model turns out to be an improved understanding of electromagnetism. The obtained electromagnetic Lagrangian is the simplest possible relativistic Lagrangian formulation. Quantum mechanical relations follow naturally from this model, and we derive the electromagnetic formulation of the Dirac equation. The spinor field is shown to correspond to electromagnetic energy-momentum, and the complex-valued probability density is shown to corresp…

Disentangling Housing Supply to Shift towards Smart Cities: Analysing Theoretical and Empirical Studies

2022

The search for a pleasant home has concerned people ever since. Paradoxically, people are facing strong difficulties in finding a decent place to settle their lives in cities. As such, the housing market regained momentum in connection with the development of Smart Cities, where life quality of residents is strongly emphasized. Well-being in the metropolis is affected by a wide variety of factors with housing supply being among the most important, hence stirred by financing costs, construction costs, vacancy rate, sales delay, inflation rate, housing stock, price of agricultural land, and regulation. The present article reviews empirical studies on housing supply for a better understanding …

A Gamified Mobility Experience

2020

We believe in the use of urban games to define new enjoyable experiences, change citizens’ unsustainable habits and educate them to new environment-and social-friendly ones. This paper presents MUV, an innovative action that has the power to engage citizens and foster sustainable mobility behaviors. MUV complements engaging HMIs with a participatory method within an iterative innovation process called the virtuous cycle (understand, involve, co-create, implement, experiment). The innovation process has led to a new game dynamic: Mobility as a Sport. It results in a rewarding personal mobility experience; the same rewarding sensations the athletes feel when they improve their results.

Training and Deployment as a Basis for Usability Engineering of Mobile Systems

2008

Usability engineering of mobile systems challenges existing methods and raises new concerns. Usability evaluations are frequently described as a separate discipline and in many cases usability evaluations are separate activities within the design and development of systems. This paper presents a development project where training in and the deployment of a mobile system were used to identify usability problems. The project aimed to develop a mobile system to supporting information processes for workers on building sites. An iterative usability evaluation process was conducted the process was refined and validated using two action research projects. The approach of the research was user-cent…
