Supertargeting-based hierarchic evaluation for setting paths in relaxation of retrofitted Heat Exchanger Networks
2010
The application of pinch analysis to the retrofit of existing heat exchanger networks is a complex task, which can be hardly standardised due to the large number of unquantifiable design considerations. Top-down and bottom-up approaches have been usually pursued, respectively oriented to relax a Maximum Energy Recovery (MER) configuration and to improve the existing network by removing network pinches. In this paper the bottom-up approach is critically examined, considering a well known case study represented by an aromatics plant; a MER design is also obtained and evaluated, to represent a target for process improvement. The final objective of researches in this sector is the identificatio…
An intelligent way to predict the building thermal needs: ANNs and optimization
2022
The evaluation of the energy performance of existing or new buildings is a fundamental action to guarantee the feasibility of a project and the achievement of the minimum efficiency requirements. In general, the determination of the thermal loads of a building is carried out via software but their use requires adequate knowledge of physical phenomena and therefore the presence of an expert user. Furthermore, the resolution can be difficult to implement and can require high computational costs; all conditions that can influence the success of a project. Based on these considerations, this work proposes an alternative solution to traditional calculation tools, which in a simple and effective …
Assessment of indoor illuminance and study on best photosensors' position for design and commissioning of Daylight Linked Control Systems. A new meth…
2018
Abstract Artificial lighting systems have to ensure appropriate illuminance with high energy efficiency according to best design practice and technical standards. These aims can be tackled, by incorporating a Daylight linked control system. However, the system behaviour is strongly influenced by several factors and, in particular, by the sensors' position. Indeed, very often the illuminance on work-plane is not fully correlated with illuminance measured by the photo-sensor used to control the luminaires. This fact leads to wrong information for the Daylight linked control systems affecting its efficacy. The artificial intelligence of Neural Networks can be exploited to provide a method for …
Monitoring the urban environment: developing a mixed (fix and mobile) observatory on the urban quality control
2005
An integrated network of monitoring was developed by the authors from 2002. A wide knowledge of the space and time distribution of the environmental data can be acquired integrating the network of fixed stations (were each environmental parameter is collected) with a number of sensors installed on public transport means (were, at the present time, only some parameters are collected). All citizens of the involved local governments will benefit from an increased awareness of environmental quality and their effects on health. The system could be considered as a decision support system and a tool of knowledge dissemination. The aims of the system is to define a standard protocol for monitoring …
Forecasting noise levels by means of neural networks for assessing urban traffic policies
2005
Within the assessment of the sustainability of plans and actions concerning the built environment, the transportation sector plays an increasing role, due to its importance in the economic and social life of countries. As that, the analysis of the sustainability concerning the transportation sector is now often embodied into the so called Strategic Environmental Analyses (SEA), that should provide local administrators with easy criteria for ranking the environmental suitability of designing policies, and that would seem to encounter the needed features for a correct evaluation of the urban masterplan. The urban noise forecast is very useful for local administrations, which have presently to…
An improved five-parameter model for photovoltaic modules
2010
This paper presents a new five-parameter model capable of analytically describing the I–V characteristic of a photovoltaic module for each generic condition of operative temperature and solar irradiance. The parameters of the equivalent electrical circuit are extracted by solving a system of equations based on data commonly issued by manufacturers in standard rating conditions with a trial and error process. The procedure, which does not require any special equations solver, can be easily coded into a short software routine using simple languages and finds the solution of the system of equations with the desired accuracy without needing to be guided towards solutions starting from fitted in…
Dynamic simulation of a 4th Generation District Heating network with the presence of prosumers
2022
District Heating Network is identified as a promising technology for the decarbonization of urban areas. Thanks to the surplus of heat available from distributed renewable energy plants, a typical heat consumer of the network could become an energy producer during the day (typically referred to as “prosumer”). Models for thermal grids developed during the years usually assumed a centralized heat production. The increasing presence of prosumers will require accurate dynamic modeling to monitor the changes induced in the thermohydraulic variables of the network. To fill this knowledge gap, this paper aims at developing a model of a thermal grid with prosumers in TRNSYS environment. The model …

A Novel Framework of Hybrid Harvesting Mechanisms for Remote Sensing Devices
2022
Sensing networks have recently proven to be useful in a variety of disciplines. The use of mobile sensing robots and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is intended to lessen the burden of sensor node energy consumption. However, conserving energy in the networks remains a major concern. In this work, a design of a hybrid RF-Solar harvesting system to support sensing devices is investigated. The harvesting circuits may collect energy from both solar and radio frequency (RF) resources that are commonly available in ambient environments. This approach creates hybrid harvesting circuits for all elements in the combined sensor networks by combining RF and solar harvester circuits. The RF harvester …
