Luminescence of the surface nonbridging oxygen hole center in silica: Spectral and decay properties

We investigated the red luminescence in a porous film of silica nanoparticles, originating from surface nonbridging oxygen hole centers. The excitation spectrum was measured from 1.8 to 8.0 eV by a tunable laser system and a synchrotron radiation source; this spectrum evidences a peak at 2.0 eV, nearly overlapping with the emission, and an ultraviolet broadband with peaks at 4.8 and 6.0 eV. The emission is characterized by a spectrum with two subbands split by 0.07 eV, its decay occurs with lifetime longer than 30 microsec and undergoes a thermal quenching by a factor aboout 2 with increasing temperature from 10 to 290 K. Beryllium-induced disturbances of the murine immune system reflect some phenomena observed in sarcoidosis.

Sarcoidosis is a systemic granulomatous disorder of unknown origin. In respect to clinical and immunological characteristics, it is indistinguishable from berylliosis. As an approach to develop a murine model reflecting some aspects of sarcoidosis, we attempted to induce berylliosis in mice by treating inbred F1 mice (C57B16 x DBA/2) with 3 mg beryllium sulfate (BeSO4) per kg body weight intraperitoneally. Either pure BeSO4 or BeSO4 in combination with incomplete Freund's adjuvant was administered. Alternatively, pure BeSO4 was injected 2 days after a single application of cyclophosphamide (150 mg/kg). The mitochondrial protein TCAIM regulates activation of T cells and thereby promotes tolerance induction of allogeneic transplants.

Primary T cell activation and effector cell differentiation is required for rejection of allogeneic grafts in naive recipients. It has become evident, that mitochondria play an important role for T cell activation. Expression of several mitochondrial proteins such as TCAIM (T cell activation inhibitor, mitochondrial) is down-regulated upon T cell receptor triggering. Here we report that TCAIM inhibited spontaneous development of memory and effector T cells. CD4(+) T cells from Tcaim knock-in (KI) mice showed reduced activation, cytokine secretion and proliferation in vitro. New therapies for sepsis: focus on the interleukin (IL)12 family member IL27

Sepsis is a severe complication of abdominal infections such as peritonitis and is associated with high mortality. Unfortunately, the molecular mechanisms controlling the development of sepsis are still incompletely understood. Interestingly, the interleukin (IL) 12 family member IL27 seems to play a key role in sepsis. In a murine model of septic peritonitis induced by caecal ligation and puncture (CLP), IL27 levels were found to be strongly induced. Furthermore, mice deficient for the EBI3 subunit of IL27 were resistant to CLP-induced septic peritonitis as compared to wild-type controls. A 5500-year oxygen isotope record of high arctic environmental change from southern Spitsbergen

The oxygen isotope composition of chironomid head capsules in a sediment core spanning the past 5500 years from Lake Svartvatnet in southern Spitsbergen was used to reconstruct the oxygen isotope composition of lake water (δ18Olw) and local precipitation. The δ18Olw values display shifts from the baseline variability consistent with the timing of recognized historical climatic episodes, such as the Roman Warm Period, the Dark Ages Cold Period and the ‘Little Ice Age’. The highest values of the record, ca. 3‰ above modern δ18Olw values, occur at ca. 1900–1800 cal. yr BP. Rapid and eco-friendly synthesis of graphene oxide-silica nanohybrids

The increasing interest in Graphene oxide (GO) is due to many issues: the presence of both sp2-conjugated atoms and oxygen-containing functional groups provides a strong hydrophilicity and the possibility to further functionalize it with other molecules (i.e. π-π interactions covalent attachment etc.) [1]. Furthermore since the GO is biocompatible and noncytotoxic many studies have been recently focused on the development of GO-based nanodevices for bioimaging DNA detection drug delivery. Due to their low cytotoxicity and large internal surface area silica nanoparticles have been taken into account as promising material for biolabeling and drug loading/delivery. Particular consideration has recently been demonstrated for GO-silica composites because of the potentialities for electrical applications their chemical inertia and stability toward ions exposure. The possibility to combine the extraordinary properties of GO and silica offers several advantages for the realization of nanoprobes for biological applications and of biosensor [12]. The strategy for the fabrication of GO-nanosilica nanohybrids can be schematized as follows: (i) synthesis of GO by oxidizing graphite powder with the method described by Marcano et al. [3] (ii) Preparation of oxygen-loaded silica nanoparticles by thermal treatments in controlled atmosphere in order to induce high NIR emission at 1272 nm from high purity silica nanoparticles. (iii) preparation of GrO-silica nanohybrid films via rapid solvent casting in water. The nanohybrids were tested by XPS FTIR Raman analysis UV photoluminescence analysis TGA Zeta potential measurements electrical tests AFM and SEM. Several nanohybrids were prepared by combining two different typologies of GO and two different samples of silica.
