Dynamics of the labyrinthine patterns at the diffuse phase boundaries

2001

The phase diagram of a magnetic colloid in a Hele-Shaw cell is calculated. As a function of the magnetic field strength, of the concentration and of the layer thickness the magnetic colloid can find itself in a stripe phase, the hexagonal phase or in an unmodulated state. Those results allow to interpret experiments observing the transformation of a labyrinthine pattern into a hexagonal structure. This possibility is confirmed directly by the numerical simulation presented here and showing the transformation of the labyrinthine pattern into the hexagonal structure.

Anomalous Hall Effect

2018

The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is one of the most fundamental, practically important and for a long time most enigmatic phenomena exhibited by magnetic materials. Here, we briefly outline the relation of the anomalous Hall effect to the geometric properties of the electronic states as given by the Berry phase. The Berry phase origins of the AHE lead to its topological manifestations in insulators, which we review in detail based on key examples. In addition to the intrinsic AHE and its anisotropy in solids, we draw a deep correlation of this effect with orbital magnetism and magnetoelectric response, and discuss its emergence in non-collinear magnets.

Anyons and transmutation of statistics via vacuum induced Berry phase

2004

We show that bosonic fields may present anyonic behavior when interacting with a fermion in a Jaynes-Cummings-like model. The proposal is accomplished via the interaction of a two-level system with two quantized modes of a harmonic oscillator; under suitable conditions, the system acquires a fractional geometric phase. A crucial role is played by the entanglement of the system eigenstates, which provides a two-dimensional confinement in the effective evolution of the system, leading to the anyonic behavior. For a particular choice of parameters, we show that it is possible to transmute the statistics of the system continually from fermions to bosons. We also present an experimental proposal…

Free fermion antibunching in a degenerate atomic Fermi gas released from an optical lattice

2006

Noise in a quantum system is fundamentally governed by the statistics and the many-body state of the underlying particles. Whereas for bosonic particles the correlated noise observed for e.g. photons or bosonic neutral atoms can still be explained within a classical field description with fluctuating phases, the anticorrelations in the detection of fermionic particles have no classical analogue. The observation of such fermionic antibunching is so far scarce and has been confined to electrons and neutrons. Here we report on the first direct observation of antibunching of neutral fermionic atoms. Through an analysis of the atomic shot noise in a set of standard absorption images, of a gas of…

Fermion Condensation in Strongly Interacting Fermi Liquids

2017

This article discusses the construction of a theory which is capable to explain so-called non-Fermi liquid behavior of strongly correlated Fermi systems. We show that such explanation can be done within the framework of a so-called fermion condensation approach. In this approach, as a result of fermion condensation quantum phase transition, ordinary Landau quasiparticles do not decay, but reborn, gaining new properties, as Phoenix from the ashes. The physical reason for that is altering of Fermi surface topology. To be more specific, in contrast to standard Landau paradigm stating that the quasiparticle effective mass does not depend on external stimuli like magnetic field and/or temperatur…

Magnetic order in the heavy fermion system Ce(Cu1−xNix)2Ge2

1990

Abstract The magnetic phase diagram of the heavy fermion (HF) systems Ce(Cu 1−x Ni x ) 2 Ge 2 is discussed utilizing results of transport, thermodynamic and neutron-scattering measurements. While the Kondo temperature increases monotonically with x, a complex x-dependence is found for the Neel temperature, associated with a transition from local-moment to itinerant HF magnetism.

Interference pattern and visibility of a Mott insulator

2005

We analyze theoretically the experiment reported in [F. Gerbier et al, cond-mat/0503452], where the interference pattern produced by an expanding atomic cloud in the Mott insulator regime was observed. This interference pattern, indicative of short-range coherence in the system, could be traced back to the presence of a small amount of particle/hole pairs in the insulating phase for finite lattice depths. In this paper, we analyze the influence of these pairs on the interference pattern using a random phase approximation, and derive the corresponding visibility. We also account for the inhomogeneity inherent to atom traps in a local density approximation. The calculations reproduce the expe…

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction and Hall Effects in the Skyrmion Phase ofMn1−xFexGe

2015

We carry out density functional theory calculations which demonstrate that the electron dynamics in the Skyrmion phase of Fe-rich Mn_{1-x}Fe_{x}Ge alloys is governed by Berry phase physics. We observe that the magnitude of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction directly related to the mixed space-momentum Berry phases, changes sign and magnitude with concentration x in direct correlation with the data of Shibata et al. [Nat. Nanotechnol. 8, 723 (2013)]. The computed anomalous and topological Hall effects in FeGe are also in good agreement with available experiments. We further develop a simple tight-binding model able to explain these findings. Finally, we show that the adiabatic Berry phase…

The WKB Approximation

2017

In this chapter we shall develop an important semiclassical method which has come back into favor again, particularly in the last few years, since it permits a continuation into field theory. Here, too, one is interested in nonperturbative methods.

General treatment of vortical, toroidal, and compression modes

2011

The multipole vortical, toroidal, and compression modes are analyzed. Following the vorticity concept of Ravenhall and Wambach, the vortical operator is derived and related in a simple way to the toroidal and compression operators. The strength functions and velocity fields of the modes are analyzed in $^{208}$Pb within the random-phase-approximation using the Skyrme force SLy6. Both convection and magnetization nuclear currents are taken into account. It is shown that the isoscalar (isovector) vortical and toroidal modes are dominated by the convection (magnetization) nuclear current while the compression mode is fully convective. The relation between the above concept of the vorticity to …
