Actinopathies and Myosinopathies

2009

The currently recognized two forms of "anabolic" protein aggregate myopathies, that is, defects in development, maturation and final formation of respective actin and myosin filaments encompass actinopathies and myosinopathies. The former are marked by mutations in the ACTA1 gene, largely of the de novo type. Aggregates of actin filaments are deposited within muscle fibers. Early clinical onset is often congenital; most patients run a rapidly progressive course and die during their first 2 years of life. Myosinopathies or myosin storage myopathies also commence in childhood, but show a much more protracted course owing to mutations in the myosin heavy chain gene MYH7. Protein aggregation co…

Unmet needs and gaps in the identification of secondary progression in multiple sclerosis: a Southern Italy healthcare professionals' perspective

2022

Abstract Objective Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease with different clinical courses and a tendency to worsening. The relapsing–remitting MS presents acute onset and relapses of neurological symptoms, followed by their remission. This form can convert to secondary progressive MS (SPMS) with irreversible neurological worsening and disability. The identification of signs, symptoms, markers of progression, and strategies to manage MS patients is mandatory to allow early identification of those at higher risk of conversion to SPMS, for prompt intervention to cope with the progression of the disease. Methods A panel of Italian experts from Southern Italy have reviewed the current know…

ULTERIORI APPROFONDIMENTI DEGLI EFFETTI DELLA DIMENSIONE DEGLI ACINI SULLA QUALITA’ DELL’UVA NELLA CV CABERNET SAUVIGNON

2012

In this study we reported the results of a second year of study conducted during 2008 season on irrigated Cabernet Sauvignon\ 1103 P vineyard. We addressed the study of whether differences in berry size (within a population of berries from different bunches) would lead to differences in qualitative parameters and whether flowering process can influence berries variability and qualitative parameters. Berries were classified at pea size into two categories according to their equatorial diameter: ≤ 7 mm as small and ≥ 9 mm as large berries. Development of the two berry categories was evaluated from “pea size” (12th June) to harvest (16th September) in terms of berry mass, equatorial berry diam…

Differences in achievement not in intelligence in the north and south of Italy: Comments on

2012

Abstract Lynn (2010a, 2010b) argued that individuals from south Italy have a lower IQ than individuals from north Italy, and that these differences in IQ are at the basis of north–south gap in income, education, infant mortality, stature, and literacy. In the present paper, we discuss several theoretical and methodological aspects which we regard as flaws of Lynn's studies. Moreover, we report scores of southern Italian children on Raven's Progressive Matrices and a north–south comparison for the PASS theory of intelligence as measured by the Cognitive Assessment System (Taddei & Naglieri, 2006). Both results reveal similar levels of performance of northern and southern Italian children in …

Relationship between socioeconomic factors and intelligence of preschoolers: A cohort study in the Serbian context

2020

The aim of the current research is to analyse the relationship between the socioeconomic status (SES) of parents and intellectual abilities (IQ) of preschool children of Serbian territory, and in particular how SES factors relate to preschool children’s IQ measured with Raven’s Coloured Progressive Matrices (CPM), in the different age groups. The research included 430 parents and 430 preschool children. A confirmatory factor analysis of the SES questionnaire revealed five factors: educational and professional status of father and mother, residential and educational status of the family, sport status of parents and comfort of family housing. No gender differences in IQ levels were found in c…

New Representations for Multidimensional Functions Based on Kolmogorov Superposition Theorem. Applications on Image Processing

2012

Mastering the sorting of the data in signal (nD) can lead to multiple applications like new compression, transmission, watermarking, encryption methods and even new processing methods for image. Some authors in the past decades have proposed to use these approaches for image compression, indexing, median filtering, mathematical morphology, encryption. A mathematical rigorous way for doing such a study has been introduced by Andrei Nikolaievitch Kolmogorov (1903-1987) in 1957 and recent results have provided constructive ways and practical algorithms for implementing the Kolmogorov theorem. We propose in this paper to present those algorithms and some preliminary results obtained by our team…

Urban shrinkage became a central issue in both the scientific debate and the political agenda of several European cities. According to EUROSTAT data (2019) about 40% of European cities with more than 200000 inhabitants are losing population. A shrinkage that is more explicit in a progressive underutilization of the built heritage as well as in the concomitant increase of abandoned areas. In this controversial framework of structural mutation of the city urban policies in Europe try to decline the degrowth as a strategic opportunity to invest in green areas in order to increase urban quality and to act simultaneously on the development of local economies. With respect to the above framework this contribution focuses on the evaluation of the effects that the project of new public green spaces have generated on some sample areas on the outskirts of the city of Palermo. An urban context where according to the latest Svimez Report (2019) the phenomenon of urban shrinkage represents a constantly growing trend and on which the new Master Plan operates through a revival of interventions on environmental capital and urban green areas of the city.Settore ICAR/21 - Urbanistica

Nouvelles méthodes de traitement de signaux multidimensionnels par décomposition suivant le théorème de Superposition de Kolmogorov

2010

The processing of multidimensional signal remains difficult when using monodimensional-based methods. Therefore, it is either required to extend monodimensional methods to several dimensions, which is not always possible, or to convert the multidimensional signals into 1D signals. In this case, the priority is to preserve most of the properties of the original signal. In this context, the Kolmogorov Superposition Theorem offers a promising theoretical framework for multidimensional signal conversion. In 1957, Kolmogorov demonstrated that any multivariate function can be written as sums and compositions of monovariate functions. We have focused on the image decomposition according to the supe…

Adaptive meshes in computer graphics and model-based simulation

2006

Monet luonnonlait voidaan ilmaista matemaattisesti joko yhtenä yhtälönä tai yhtälöjärjestelmänä. Erityisesti differentiaaliyhtälöiden ratkaisu on tärkeä esimerkiksi mekaniikassa, biologiassa tai kemiassa esiin tuleva ongelma. Useimmissa tapauksissa ratkaisu tällaisiin yhtälöihin on tuntematon, joten se täytyy löytää käyttäen tietokonekoodia. Koska tietokoneet toimivat rajoitetulla tarkkuudella ja tietomäärällä, tietokoneella saatu ratkaisu on vain approksimaatio yhtälön ratkaisulle. Tämän epätarkan tiedon käyttö tietokoneavusteisessa tekniikassa voi johtaa laitteen toimintahäiriöihin. Onkin tärkeää saada kuva, kuinka hyvin tietokoneella saatu tulos edustaa tarkkaa ratkaisua.
