Endothelial function and other biomarkers of cardiovascular risk in frequent consumers of street food.
2012
Summary Background & aims Street food (SF) is defined as out-of-home food consumption, and generally consists of energy dense meals rich in saturated fats, and poor in fibers, vitamins and anti-oxidants. Though SF consumption may have unfavorable metabolic and cardiovascular effects, its possible association with endothelial function has not been considered. Methods Participants were recruited among those who took part in a previous study of ours, done in Palermo, Italy, which investigated the association between consumption of SF and health in 1002 people. In that study, a score of SF consumption was obtained by categorizing each of ten foods consumed less than or more than once a month (0…
Dietary habits are related to outcomes in patients with advanced heart failure awaiting heart transplantation.
2012
Abstract Background Empirical evidence supporting the benefits of dietary recommendations for patients with advanced heart failure is scarce. We prospectively evaluated the relation of dietary habits to pre-transplant clinical outcomes in the multisite observational Waiting for a New Heart Study. Methods and Results A total of 318 heart transplant candidates (82% male, age 53 ± 11 years) completed a Food Frequency Questionnaire (foods high in salt, saturated fats, poly-/monounsaturated fats [PUFA+MUFA], fruit/vegetables/legumes, and fluid intake) at time of waitlisting. Cox proportional hazard models controlling for heart failure severity (eg, Heart Failure Survival Score, creatinine) estim…
Crohn's disease and fatigue: constancy and co-variations of activity of the disease, depression, anxiety and subjective quality of life.
2010
International audience; Fatigue in Crohn's disease (CD) is considered as a consequence of the disease and its treatment. If research showed the impact of the activity of the disease on vitality, patients can express fatigue even if the disease is inactive. Sleep disturbances are now considered in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and they could be involved in fatigue. It is well-known that depression and anxiety occur in IBD: They involve sleep disturbances and asthenia. But neither factors have been assessed simultaneously from a longitudinal perspective. Fifty-two patients participated in this study. Fatigue (MFI), depression (HAD-D), anxiety (HAD-A), sleep disturbances (ISI, IQPS), subjec…
The relationship between functional disability and health-related quality of life in patients with a rotator cuff tear
2012
To determine the relationship between functional disability and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in rotator cuff tear (RCT) patients. In 67 RCT patients (mean age, 54 years; 57% males), functional disability was self-reported with the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Standardized Shoulder Assessment Form (ASES), HRQoL with the Short-Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36), and pain by visual analogue scale. ASES results were divided into tertiles (12-38, 39-51, and 52-82).Mean ASES score was 48 (range, 12-82). Patients with the highest functional disability and highest pain level had the lowest HRQoL. For the highest, middle, and lowest ASES categories, respectively, mean SF-36 Physical Comp…
Development and validation of the Migraine Screen Questionnaire (MS-Q).
2005
Aim.—To develop and evaluate the clinimetric properties of a new migraine screening questionnaire: the Migraine Screen Questionnaire (MS-Q). Background.—Migraine is a public health problem requiring screening programs and tools to ensure early detection. Methods.—A questionnaire was developed based on the criteria of the International Headache Society (IHS) and a review of the literature by a committee of experts. Stage I: The original version of the MS-Q was distributed by mail and completed by Pfizer employees and self-administered to neurological patients; all subjects were afterward evaluated by a neurologist who was blinded to the MS-Q results, to establish an independent IHS diagnosis…
Childhood neglect and parental care perception in cocaine addicts: Relation with psychiatric symptoms and biological correlates
2009
Childhood neglect and poor child–parent relationships have been reported to increase substance use disorders susceptibility. Stressful environmental factors, including emotional neglect, could affect individual personality traits and mental health, possibly inducing stable changes in hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis and brain mono-amine function, in turn involved in addictive behavior vulnerability. Therefore, we decided to investigate homovanillic (HVA) and prolactin (PRL) plasma levels, as expression of possible changes in dopamine function, ACTH and cortisol plasma levels, as measures of HPA axis function, and concomitant psychiatric symptoms profile in abstinent cocaine a…
Correlations between central corneal thickness and general anthropometric characteristics and cardiovascular parameters in a large European cohort fr…
2014
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlations between general anthropometric features and cardiovascular parameters and central corneal thickness (CCT) in an adult European cohort. METHODS Analysis was based on a Gutenberg Health Study cohort that included 5000 subjects (2540 male, 2460 female), aged 35 to 74 years at enrollment. The participants underwent a standardized protocol with a comprehensive questionnaire; ophthalmic examination (slit-lamp biomicroscopy; autorefractometry; noncontact tonometry; fundus photography; CCT measurements (optical pachymetry); visual field testing; and a thorough general examination focused on cardiovascular parameters, psychosomatic evalu…
Patient-Reported Nonadherence with Glaucoma Therapy
2019
Abstract Purpose: Effective glaucoma therapy relies to a great extent on the patients' ability to regularly self-administer eye drops. This study aimed to assess self-reported nonadherence and to identify potential barriers to adherence in glaucoma patients. Methods: Participants completed a 16-item questionnaire, designed to examine nonadherence rate and assess the therapy experience. Inclusion criteria stipulated treatment duration of at least 1 year. Nonadherence was defined as missing ≥5% of the prescribed pressure-lowering eye drops doses. Results: In total, 201 glaucoma patients aged 24–88 years were included. Mean treatment duration was 9.4 years. Nonadherence was reported by 30.3% o…
Long-term follow-up of a multifocal apodized diffractive intraocular lens after cataract surgery.
2007
Purpose To report the long-term performance of the AcrySof ReSTOR SA60D3 intraocular lens (IOL) after cataract surgery. Setting University Hospital Maastricht, Maastricht, The Netherlands. Methods This prospective clinical trial comprised 44 eyes (22 consecutive patients) having cataract surgery with implantation of the ReSTOR IOL. Monocular and binocular uncorrected distance visual acuity, best corrected distance visual acuity, uncorrected near visual acuity, best distance-corrected near visual acuity, spectacle dependence, undesired visual symptoms, patient satisfaction, and incidence of posterior capsule opacification were analyzed 6 months and 3 years postoperatively. Results The mean u…
Associations of disordered sleep with body fat distribution, physical activity and diet among overweight middle-aged men
2015
This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate whether body fat distribution, physical activity levels and dietary intakes are associated with insomnia and/or obstructive sleep apnea among overweight middle-aged men. Participants were 211 Finnish men aged 30-65 years. Among the 163 overweight or obese participants, 40 had insomnia only, 23 had obstructive sleep apnea only, 24 had comorbid insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea and 76 were without sleep disorder. The remaining 48 participants had normal weight without sleep disorder. Fat mass, levels of physical activity and diet were assessed by dual-energy X-ray densitometry, physical activity questionnaire and 3-day food diary, respectivel…
