Studies on small and declining populations dominate research in conservation biology. This emphasis reflects two overarching frameworks: the small-population paradigm focuses on correlates of increased extinction probability; the declining-population paradigm directs attention to the causes and consequences of depletion. Government consumption volatility and the size of nations

2016

This paper analyzes the relation between government consumption volatility and country size. Using an unbalanced sample of 160 countries from 1960 to 2010, it finds that smaller countries have more volatile government consumption. Moreover, while this relation is more negative for more volatile economies, there is also evidence that smaller countries have more volatile government consumption even controlling for the level of volatility in the economy.

Government size, composition, volatility and economic growth

This paper analyses the effects in terms of size and volatility of government revenue and spending on growth in OECD and EU countries. The results of the paper suggest that both variables are detrimental to growth. In particular, looking more closely at the effect of each component of government revenue and spending, the results point out that i) indirect taxes (size and volatility); ii) social contributions (size and volatility); iii) government consumption (size and volatility); iv) subsidies (size); and v) government investment (volatility) have a sizeable, negative and statistically significant effect on growth. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Quality of life ranking of Spanish cities: A non-compensatory approach

Abstract Urban areas are hubs of economic activity, but also consumption centers where a high quality of life may attract human capital and increase prospects of economic growth and well-being. We rank 73 Spanish cities on the basis of 35 individual indicators covering three basic facets of quality of life: socio-economic performance, general livability conditions, and residents' health status. We reject the conventional approach of compensability among different quality of life dimensions in favor of a Condorcet-inspired non-compensability approach. The Stabilizing Role of Government Size

This paper presents an analysis of how alternative models of the business cycle can replicate the stylized fact that large governments are associated with less volatile economies. Our analysis shows that adding nominal rigidities and costs of capital adjustment to an otherwise standard RBC model can generate a negative correlation between government size and the volatility of output. However, in the model, we find that the stabilizing effect is only due to a composition effect and it is not present when we look at the volatility of private output. Automatic regrouping of strata in the goodness-of-fit chi-square test

Pearson’s chi-square test is widely employed in social and health sciences to analyze categorical data and contingency tables. For the test to be valid, the sample size must be large enough to provide a minimum number of expected elements per category. This paper develops functions for regrouping strata automatically no matter where they are located, thus enabling the goodness-of-fit test to be performed within an iterative procedure. The functions are written in Excel VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) and in Mathematica. Observed and Simulated Variability of Droplet Spectral Dispersion in Convective Clouds Over the Amazon

In this study, the variability of the spectral dispersion of droplet size distributions (DSDs) in convective clouds is investigated. Analyses are based on aircraft measurements of growing cumuli near the Amazon basin, and on numerical simulations of an idealized ice‐free cumulus. In cleaner clouds, the relative dispersion ϵ, defined as the ratio of the standard deviation to the mean value of the droplet diameter, is negatively correlated with the ratio of the cloud water content (qc) to the adiabatic liquid water content (qa), while no strong correlation between ϵ and qc/qa is seen in polluted clouds. Using CFD to derive reduced order models for heat transfer in particle curtains

3–D Eulerian–Eulerian CFD is used to simulate convective heat transfer in free falling particle curtains. Total heat loss for curtaining particles is compared to heat loss for isolated single particles. Spherical silica particles with density of 2,634 kg/m³ at 400 K (200 µm, 400 µm and 600 µm) flow at approximately 0.041 kg/s to 0.2 kg/s through a narrow slot in a rectangular box (0.45 m × 0.9 m × 0.225 m) filled with ambient air. The slot sizes through which the particles enter the rectangular box were 10 to 80 mm wide.
