Students’ perspectives on English medium instruction within higher education. Exploring gender differences in Norway and Finland

2020

This study aims to explore gender differences in students’ perspectives on language use within higher education (HE), using data from a survey distributed to students at two universities in Norway and Finland. Analysing responses concerning language use in HE, I found that most students were positively inclined towards English medium instruction (EMI). However, while there in both countries were only small differences in attitudes towards EMI between male and female students, in Finland, female students were less confident in their English skills than male students were. Furthermore, female students in both countries reported more difficulties in coping with English in their day-to-day stud…

Engla…

Early prediction of reading : phonological awareness and related language and cognitive skills in children with a familial risk for dyslexia

2007

Efforts to maintain Latvian identity in Augšbebri village, Omsk region

2015

Driven by various motives, Latvian emigrants and exiles have been voluntarily or involuntarily choosing various regions of the world as their new home. Siberia is one such region – the first Latvian exiles were deported to this remote Russian territory already in the 18th century and a new wave of settlers moved there on their own accord in search of a better life in the early 19th century. Some of the Latvian villages have survived in Russia to this day. Augšbebri (Bobrovka) village in the Tara district, Omsk region, is one of them. Augšbebri village was founded in 1897 when the first settlers from Latvia registered as residents there. The modern-day residents of Augšbebri are the sixth ge…

Angļu valodas lasīšanas mācību materiālu teorētiskā pamatojuma analīze

2022

Lasīšanas prasmju un iemaņu attīstīšana ietver vairākas lingvistikas dimensijas, tāpēc efektīvu valodas mācību materiālu izstrāde ir ļoti svarīga, lai apgūtu lasītprasmi. Šī pētījuma mērķis ir noskaidrot, vai ievērojamu izdevniecību mācību materiāli atbilst lasītprasmes attīstības teorētiskajam ietvaram. Kā līdzeklis pētījuma mērķa sasniegšanai tiek izmantota B1/Intermediate līmeņa mācību materiālu uzdevumu kvalitatīvā teorētiskā pamatojuma analīze. Pētījuma rezultāti atklāj, ka publicētajos lasīšanas mācību materiālos tiek izmantoti dažādi līdzekļi, lai atbalstītu izglītojamo lasīšanas paņēmienu izpēti un vingrināšanu. Tiek secināts, ka analizētie uzdevumi atbilst teorētiskajām atziņām un …

The Use of Digital Storytelling for ESP in a Technical English Course for Aerospace Engineers.

2012

Digital Storytelling is a powerful pedagogical tool for both students and educators, which started to be used for teaching and learning purposes a few years ago, becoming more and more popular over time. The use of digital storytelling in non-specific language learning contexts has been widely explored, as shown in the literature. However, its use in technical-scientific contexts of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has not been so widely studied. This paper explores a project of digital storytelling for ESP carried out at the Universitat Politècnica de València, in Spain. The methodology was divided into several stages: completing a pre- and a post-survey, learning about digital storytel…

Might as well jump: Sound affects muscle activation in skateboarding

2014

The aim of the study is to reveal the role of sound in action anticipation and performance, and to test whether the level of precision in action planning and execution is related to the level of sensorimotor skills and experience that listeners possess about a specific action. Individuals ranging from 18 to 75 years of age - some of them without any skills in skateboarding and others experts in this sport - were compared in their ability to anticipate and simulate a skateboarding jump by listening to the sound it produces. Only skaters were able to modulate the forces underfoot and to apply muscle synergies that closely resembled the ones that a skater would use if actually jumping on a ska…
