Oculoectodermal syndrome: Report of a new case with a broad clinical spectrum

Oculoectodermal syndrome (OMIM 600268) is rare and characterized by aplasia cutis congenita, epibulbar dermoids, and other abnormalities. We report herein on a newly recognized patient with oculoectodermal syndrome, which is the 19th reported patient with OES. The boy aged six years demonstrated a broad clinical spectrum of this condition, including aplasia cutis congenita, epibulbar dermoids, hyperkeratotic papule, mildly enlarged cisterna magna, and an enlarged fluid space in the quadrigeminal cistern, suggesting a cyst. New findings What is the central question of this study? Ageing impairs the skin's thermal and tactile sensitivity: does ageing also induce loss of skin wetness sensitivity? What is the main finding and its importance? Older adults show an average 15% loss of skin wetness sensitivity, with this sensory deficit being mediated by a combination of reductions in skin's tactile sensing and hydration status. A study of densified biochar as carbon source in the silicon and ferrosilicon production

Abstract Biochar pellets were investigated as renewable reducing agents in substitution of coal and coke in the silicon and ferrosilicon production, where a high reactivity, good mechanical properties and low feedstock costs are appreciated. The usage of pyrolysis oil as binder was investigated as way to improve the quality of the pellets. Norway spruce biochar produced at 500, 800 and 1100 °C, was pelletized blended with pyrolysis oil and lignosulphonate. Corrosion resistance of passive films on different stainless steel grades in food and beverage industry

Abstract Passive films were grown on 304 L, 316 L and Duplex stainless steels by immersion at open circuit potential in solutions mimicking food and beverage industry environments. In acidic food stainless steel surfaces are covered by Cr rich passive films, and generalized dissolution occurs on their surface with consequent ions release into the electrolyte. In fatty food the concentration of released ions is significantly lower since generalized corrosion does not occur, but the loss on MnS inclusions strongly reduces the polarization resistance in this environment especially for 304 L due to its higher localized corrosion susceptibility with respect to the other grades.

Wetting of a short chain liquid on a brush: First-order and critical wetting transitions

We investigate the wetting behaviour of short chains on a surface covered with a brush of end-grafted chains of the same architecture by a combination of self-consistent field calculations and liquid-state theory. The surface interacts with the monomers via (non-retarded) van der Waals interactions of strength A. At low grafting densities, we find first-order wetting transitions. Mechanical and microstructural characterization of friction stir welded skin and stringer joints

A microstructural and mechanical investigation on lap joints welded by friction stir welding and made out of a 7075-T6 stringer and a 2024-T4 skin is presented. In particular, the metallurgical and mechanical properties of joints have been studied at different tool feed rates (V = 35, 50, 100 mm/min) and constant rotation speed (R = 500 r/min). Temperature distributions have been monitored during the process. It is found that in the welded area, the recrystallized zone (nugget) has an average grain size of about 3 µm and exhibits coarsened MgZn2 particles on grain boundaries.
