Cytomegalovirus DNAemia in patients with de novo acute myeloid leukemia undergoing cytotoxic chemotherapy

2019

There is evidence suggesting that cytomegalovirus (CMV) reactivation following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) may be associated with a lower relapse incidence in acu...

Spanish Society of Hematology and Hemotherapy expert consensus opinion for SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in onco-hematological patients.

2021

Abstract In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, different vaccines in front of SARS-CoV-2 have been approved and administered in different vulnerable populations. As patients with cancer were excluded from pivotal trials of vaccination, little is known on their immunogenic response to these vaccines, particularly in patients with severely impaired immune system. In response to that uncertainty, the Spanish Society of Hematology and Hemotherapy launched an initiative aimed to provide recommendations for vaccination of the main hematological conditions. This document is based on the available information on COVID-19 outcomes, prior knowledge on vaccination in hematological patients, recent pu…

Predictive Factors for Outcome of First Allogeneic Transplant for Elderly Patients With Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

2021

Abstract Introduction/Background: The treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in patients older than 70 is extremely challenging with dismal outcome. Allogeneic stem cell transplantation (alloHCT) has seen many advancements in the last decades showing benefits in younger ALL patients, but this treatment modality is decreasingly used with increasing age due to high treatment-related mortality. Patients and Methods: We identified 84 ALL patients 70 to 84 years old allografted In 2002 to 2019 from a matched related (23%), unrelated (58%), haploidentical (17%), or cord blood (2%) donor at EBMT participating centers with a median follow-up of 23 months. Results: The 2-year relapse incide…

Growth rates or radiobiological hypoxia are not correlated with local metabolite content in human melanoma xenografts with similar vascular network.

1995

Investigations were carried out on two lines of human melanomas (MF; n = 12 and EE; n = 13) xenografted in nude mice. The tumours were characterised by a similar vascular supply but showed a pronounced difference in the rate of volume growth and in the radiobiologically hypoxic fraction. The distribution of ATP, glucose and lactate in the tumours was investigated using quantitative bioluminescence and single photon imaging. Concentrations of the metabolites were obtained as global values for the entire tumour mass, in regions with densely packed, structurally intact tumour cells ('viable zones'), in areas with necrosis, stromal cells and fibrous material ('necrotic zones') and in adjacent n…

Feasibility of thiotepa addition to the fludarabine-busulfan conditioning with tacrolimus/sirolimus as graft vs host disease prophylaxis.

2020

In classical reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC) regimens, including the fludarabine and busulphan (BF) combination, sirolimus and tacrolimus (SIR-TAC) as graft vs host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis has shown acceptable results. The outcomes of SIR-TAC in a more intense RIC regimen as Thiotepa-fludarabine-busulfan (TBF) have been hardly investigated. This retrospective study included all consecutive patients receiving an allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for myeloid malignancies (January 2009-2017) conditioned with either TBF or BF and receiving SIR-TAC. Patients receiving TBF presented higher non-relapse mortality (31.6 vs 12.3%,p = .01), along with shorter overall survival …

Recent Advances in the Treatment of Patients with Multiple Myeloma

2020

Simple Summary The evolving data from trials assessing novel combinations as a part of the frontline and relapse treatment in transplant and non-transplant candidates have markedly improved the anti-myeloma efficacy of the different therapeutic regimens and improved patients’ prognosis. Current treatment objectives are focused to further improve the rate of complete remission, time to progression, progression-free survival and overall survival without increasing toxicity. Besides, different strategies are being developed in the elderly population as this group of patients requires a closer monitoring with individualized, dose-modified regimens to improve tolerability while maintaining their…

Flt3 ligand lessens the growth of tumors obtained after colon cancer cell injection in rats but does not restore tumor-suppressed dendritic cell func…

2000

A defective function of the antigen-presenting cells may represent one of the ways used by cancer cells to escape the immune response. We have previously shown that human and rat colon carcinomas were infiltrated by dendritic cells that did not express the B7 co-stimulatory molecules required for inducing an efficient T-cell response. Flt3 ligand is a cloned hematopoietic growth factor that markedly augments the number of functional dendritic and NK cells in lymphoid and non-lymphoid tissues and exerts anti-tumor activity in various experimental models. We show here that repeated Flt3 ligand administration delays the s.c. growth of rat colon cancer cells in syngeneic animals without inducin…

Endothelial angiopoietin-2 overexpression in explanted livers identifies subjects at higher risk of recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma after live…

2022

BackgroundThough the precise criteria for accessing LT are consistently being applied, HCC recurrence (HCC-R_LT) still affects more than 15% of the patients. We analyzed the clinical, histopathological, and biological features of patients with HCC to identify the predictive factors associated with cancer recurrence and survival after LT.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed 441 patients with HCC who underwent LT in our center. Overall, 70 (15.8%) of them developed HCC-R_LT. We matched them by age at transplant and etiology with 70 non-recurrent patients. A comparable cohort from the Liver Transplant Centre of Bologna served as validation. The clinical and biochemical characteristics and pre-LT…

Fulminant hepatic failure requiring liver transplantation in 22q13.3 deletion syndrome.

2010

We report on a 4-year-old girl with severe developmental delay, absent speech, and chromosome 22q13.3 deletion (Phelan-McDermid syndrome), karyotype 46,XX.ish del(22)(q13.31qter)(ARSA-,N85A-,SHANK3-). At the age of 3 years, she needed an emergency liver transplantation because of fulminant hepatic failure, most likely caused by hyperacute autoimmune hepatitis triggered by a viral infection. This is the second report of a patient with 22q13.3 deletion and fulminant liver failure. By array-CGH we identified in this patient a 5.675 Mb terminal deletion (22q13.31 --> qter; including approximately 55 genes; from NUP50 to RABL2B) and in the previous patient a 1.535 Mb deletion (22q13.32 --> qter;…
