Aspectual suppletion and paradigm defectiveness in the Proto-Indo-European verbal system
2009
The existence of suppletion in the Proto-Indo-European language is still a question of debate (García Ramón 2002). While the evidence for such a phenomenon has been widely recognized within the verbal system of most Indo-European languages, some scholars describe it as a recent monoglot development which characterizes the history of each single language without involving a previous common stage (Van der Laar 2000). According to Strunk (1977), the hypothesis of a PIE suppletive paradigm based on the alternation of basic verbal root pairs such as *es-: *bhū- “be”, or *ei/i-: *gwā/ gwem- “go”, must be ruled out because it violates what he calls b-criterium, i.e. the complementary distribution …
Sustainable Regeneration of Brownfields
2016
Our cities are really rich of building ensembles now deserted which were, in the recent past, sources of job and productivity for the community. They are generally inside the urban fabric or in the suburbs and they are often not particularly taken into consideration because they haven’t architectonic characteristics which could justify a restoration. Due to their big extension, the planning approach turns to be diffucult. Besides, these areas, if adequately restored, could become an important economic and cultural resource and a possibility of experimentation of new sustainable technologies. All this heritage requires a planning approach based on conservation and valorization of all the cul…
QuASIt: A Cognitive Inspired Approach to Question Answering for the Italian Language
2016
In this paper we present QuASIt, a Question Answering System for the Italian language, and the underlying cognitive architecture. The term cognitive is meant in the procedural semantics perspective, which states that the interpretation and/or production of a sentence requires the execution of some cognitive processes over both a perceptually grounded model of the world, and a linguistic knowledge acquired previously. We attempted to model these cognitive processes with the aim to make an artificial agent able both to understand and produce natural language sentences. The agent runs these processes on its inner domain representation using the linguistic knowledge also. In this sense, QuASIt …
Glossing the Old Frisian Psalter: Pragmatics and Competence
2014
The essay takes into examination the interlinear glosses in Old Frisian in the fragment of Psalter in ms. Groningen, Universiteitsbibliotheek 404. This is the oldest medieval Frisian fragmentary codex to survive and contains verses of Psalms XVII, XXVII, and XVIII, accompanied by glosses in the vernacular. This essay is the first lengthy study specifically devoted to the typology of the glosses themselves and their peculiarities (within the field of interlinear glosses). On close inspection, the OF glosses show a large internal coherence and individual quality. As far as the lexicon is concerned, the glosses feature a series of words belonging to the juridical lexicon, whereas other word-ch…
Type/Typology
2020
The concept of TYPE and the reference to a modality of thought characterized by a typological STYLE undoubtedly constitute characteristic elements of the morphological discourse, whether considered in its Goethean meaning, analysed starting from the many philosophical, naturalistic, poetological sources that come together in Goethe’s thought, or still because of the modern and contemporary developments that arose from the Goethean perspective in philosophy and in the natural sciences.
Characteristics of young offenders depending on the type of crime
2015
The aim of this study is to define a profile of juvenile offenders depending on the type of crime (against property or against persons), according to several socio-demographic variables, and a number of indicators of juvenile risk. Participants were 395 adolescents between the ages of 14 and 18 with a criminal record in the juvenile court over a two-year follow-up period. Results showed that in property-related offences the offender is more likely to be male, from an Eastern European country, and with inconsistent parenting. On the other hand, crimes against persons would be committed mostly by girls, Latin American or African juveniles, and with individual factors such as aggressive behavi…

Hygiene and Eating Healthy Habits and Practices in Spanish Families with Children Aged 6 to 14.
2020
During childhood and pre-adolescence, the family environment is key to initiating and consolidating healthy styles in children through a balanced diet and basic hygiene habits. A representative Spanish national sample of 1103 Spanish parents, 270 fathers and 833 mothers, with children aged 6 to 14, is analysed. The study is descriptive, using statistical techniques with classic indicators (means, percentages). The results show that nuclear familie…
Aportaciones documentales sobre cruces de orfebrería valencianas. Siglos XIV y XV
2020
The article intends to make a contribution of new documentary references, from the notarial funds of the Valencian archives, in which news about parish crosses and Lignum Crucis from the silversmith center of Valencia during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries are collected. The importance of these typologies lies in being the main elements of Christian worship, so it was an essential piece in each parish that allowed the provision in them of models of varied typology and functionality; for that reason they are conserved from altar crosses, cross-shaped reliquaries ?known as Lignum Crucis or Veracruz ?to processional crosses, larger and representative of the parish community to which it …
