Isolated Pediatric Intramedullary Schwannoma: Case Report and Review of Literature

Background: Intramedullary (IM) schwannomas are rare entities representing 0.3%−1% of intramedullary tumors and 1.1% of spinal schwannomas. Beside many theories proposed, their rare occurrence might be related to the absence of Schwann cells in the spinal cord. Pediatric IM schwannomas are uncommon, and in the absence of neurofibromatosis they are extremely rare. To date, few cases have been reported in the literature. BACKGROUND Intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) is becoming more and more adopted in neurosurgery, since it has been associated to greater extent of resection (EOR) and to gross total resection (GTR) during brain tumor surgery. From June 1987 to February 1990, 142 out of 319 patients with rectal tumours were investigated by ultrasound scanning with the object of ascertaining the depth to which the tumour had infiltrated. This examination proved completely feasible in 130 of these patients (84 men, 46 women, mean age 61.7 [42-84] years). Postoperative histological examination revealed an adenoma (n = 59) or a T1 carcinoma (n = 19), while intrarectal ultrasonography disclosed the same findings in 79 patients (true-positive in 75 cases). It is well recognized that the identification by classic cytogenetics of t(11;22)(q24;q12) is a useful aid in the accurate diagnosis of Ewing's sarcoma and related tumors. This translocation induces the EWS/FLI-1 fusion transcript, which can be detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Recent studies have also used fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to demonstrate the translocation. Giant schwannoma of the foot: a case report and literature review

A schwannoma is a rare, benign tumor originating from Schwann cells of peripheral nerve sheath. It commonly occurs in subjects between 20 and 50 years of age, and its malignant transformation is exceptional. While schwannomas usually affect the head and neck region, localization in the lower extremity is exceptionally rare, and even fewer cases have described schwannomas occurring in the foot. We report a case of a giant schwannoma of the foot diagnosed in a 65-year-old woman. A giant schwannoma of the foot is an extremely rare soft tissue tumor.
