Moderately close Neumann inclusions for the Poisson equation

2016

We investigate the behavior of the solution of a mixed problem for the Poisson equation in a domain with two moderately close holes. If ϱ1 and ϱ2 are two positive parameters, we define a perforated domain Ω(ϱ1,ϱ2) by making two small perforations in an open set: the size of the perforations is ϱ1ϱ2, while the distance of the cavities is proportional to ϱ1. Then, if r∗ is small enough, we analyze the behavior of the solution for (ϱ1,ϱ2) close to the degenerate pair (0,r∗). Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

On operads, bimodules and analytic functors

2017

We develop further the theory of operads and analytic functors. In particular, we introduce a bicategory that has operads as 0-cells, operad bimodules as 1-cells and operad bimodule maps as 2-cells, and prove that this bicategory is cartesian closed. In order to obtain this result, we extend the theory of distributors and the formal theory of monads.

Simplified Model to Predict Runoff Generation Time for Well-Drained and Vegetated Soils

2016

The study of generation process of subsurface stormflow, typical of well-drained and high permeable soils, can be theoretically carried out by applying the continuity and the motion equations with the appropriate boundary conditions. However, difficulties and uncertainness on determining soil hydraulic properties and soil physics heterogeneities let this way not always feasible. In a different way, processes dynamic can be derived by the local scale through a coarse graining procedure, allowing to preserve medium motion character, while hydraulic fluctuation of the motion are lost. Following an approach as this, in this paper a simplified model to predict the runoff generation time, the so-…

Background As an alternative to direct DNA sequencing of PCR products, random PCR-RFLP is an efficient technique to discriminate between species. The PCR-RFLP-method is an inexpensive tool in forensic science, even if the template is degraded or contains only traces of DNA from various species.

12S rRNA mitochondrial gene as marker to trace Sicilian mono-species dairy products

2016

Abstract For a rapid, specific and sensitive identification of cows', ewes' and goats' milk in mono-species Sicilian dairy products, species-specific duplex-PCR protocol was applied. DNA samples from blood and experimental cheeses of Sicilian autochthonous breeds were extracted to amplify the 12S rRNA (and part of 16S rRNA in case of Ovis aries ) mitochondrial species-specific gene fragment. The use of species-specific primers for Bos taurus , Capra hircus and Ovis aries species, after electrophoresis on agarose gel, yielded fragments of 256 bp, 326 bp and 172 bp, respectively. Amplification by duplex - PCR of DNA pools from two species showed detection thresholds of 0.1% of “contaminant” D…

Polybrominated methoxy diphenyl ethers (MeO-PBDEs) in fish and guillemot of Baltic, Atlantic and Arctic environments

2003

Arctic cod liver samples from Vestertana Fjord at the Arctic coast of Norway, salmon and guillemot samples from the Baltic Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, and salmon and lamprey larva samples from Kymijoki River in southern Finland were analysed for the occurrence of tri-, tetra- and pentabromomethoxy diphenyl ethers and their concentration levels were estimated. These compounds have previously been identified by other research groups in salmon, seal and dolphin samples. The aim of this study was to find out a possible temporal trend in the concentrations of these compounds in the cod liver samples from years 1987-1998 and to investigate the possible spatial differences in the concentrations in…

Expanding the application of stir bar sorptive-dispersive microextraction approach to solid matrices: Determination of ultraviolet filters in coastal…

2018

This work describes a new method for the determination of organic compounds in solid samples based on the equilibrium desorption of the analytes in an aqueous phase followed by stir bar sorptive-dispersive microextraction (SBSDME). Sand samples, contaminated with UV filters due to bathing and recreational activities, were dispersed in an aqueous medium by using a coated stir bar with CoFe2O4@oleic acid magnetic nanoparticles. The UV filters were physically desorbed from the surface of the sand particles and rapidly adsorbed on the hydrophobic coating of the nanoparticles, which were retrieved by means of their magnetism after stopping the stirring. In this manner, both preconcentration of t…

Menstruation: science and society

2020

© 2020 The Authors Women's health concerns are generally underrepresented in basic and translational research, but reproductive health in particular has been hampered by a lack of understanding of basic uterine and menstrual physiology. Menstrual health is an integral part of overall health because between menarche and menopause, most women menstruate. Yet for tens of millions of women around the world, menstruation regularly and often catastrophically disrupts their physical, mental, and social well-being. Enhancing our understanding of the underlying phenomena involved in menstruation, abnormal uterine bleeding, and other menstruation-related disorders will move us closer to the goal of p…

Using Sport and Wellness Technology to Promote Physical Activity: An Intervention Study among Teenagers

2019

Life-long physical activity patterns are established during teenage years. Thus, promoting physical activity for teenagers is important. Sport and wellness technology shows promise for promoting physical activity. Yet, its research with teenage populations is sparse. This intervention study focused on whether using a sport and wellness technology application could affect the physical activity intention of teenagers, its antecedents, and the antecedents’ effects on intention by using the theory of planned behavior combined with the concept of self-efficacy as a theoretical framework. The results showed no statistically significant difference between the intervention and the control group in …
