A framework to determine maximum capacity of interconnecting DGs in distribution networks

2018

Interconnecting Distributed Generation (DG) in the distribution network is considered as an important area of power system planning. When the DG placed inappropriately, the DG can have negative impact on some important and critical characteristics of system performance such as increased power losses, degraded voltage profile, and mis-coordination between protection devices. This paper introduces a framework to determine the maximum capacity limits of interconnecting DG units in radial distribution networks in order to keep protection scheme unchanged, while the voltage profile remains within acceptable range and on the same time having the minimum power losses in the network; applying this …

Stereopsis assessment at multiple distances with an iPad application

2017

[EN] We present a new application for iPad for screening stereopsis at multiple distances that allows testing up to ten levels of stereoacuity at each distance. Our approach is based on a random dot stereogram viewable with anaglyph spectacles. Sixty-five subjects with no ocular diseases, wearing their habitual correction were measured at 3 m and 0.5 m. Results were compared with a standard stereoscopic test (TNO). We found not statistically significant differences between both tests, but our method achieved higher reproducibility. Applications in visual screening programs and to design and use of 3D displays, are suggested. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

UnipaBCI a novel general software framework for brain computer interface

2017

The increasing interest in Brain Computer Interface (BCI) requires new fast, reliable and scalable frameworks that can be used by researchers to develop BCI based high performance applications in efficient and fast ways. In this paper is presented "UnipaBCI", a general software framework for BCI applications based on electroencephalogra-phy (EEG) that can fulfill these new needs. A visual evoked potentials (VEP) application has also been developed using the proposed framework in order to test the modular architecture and the overall performance. Different types of users (beginners and experts in BCI) have been involved during the "UnipaBCI" experimental test and they have exhibited good and…

Parallelizing Epistasis Detection in GWAS on FPGA and GPU-Accelerated Computing Systems

2015

This is a post-peer-review, pre-copyedit version of an article published in IEEE - ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics. The final authenticated version is available online at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/TCBB.2015.2389958 [Abstract] High-throughput genotyping technologies (such as SNP-arrays) allow the rapid collection of up to a few million genetic markers of an individual. Detecting epistasis (based on 2-SNP interactions) in Genome-Wide Association Studies is an important but time consuming operation since statistical computations have to be performed for each pair of measured markers. Computational methods to detect epistasis therefore suffer from prohibitively lon…

A Fast Algorithm Finding the Shortest Reset Words

2013

In this paper we present a new fast algorithm for finding minimal reset words for finite synchronizing automata, which is a problem appearing in many practical applications. The problem is known to be computationally hard, so our algorithm is exponential in the worst case, but it is faster than the algorithms used so far and it performs well on average. The main idea is to use a bidirectional BFS and radix (Patricia) tries to store and compare subsets. Also a number of heuristics are applied. We give both theoretical and practical arguments showing that the effective branching factor is considerably reduced. As a practical test we perform an experimental study of the length of the shortest …

Part of Speech Tagging Using Hidden Markov Models

2020

Abstract In this paper, we present a wide range of models based on less adaptive and adaptive approaches for a PoS tagging system. These parameters for the adaptive approach are based on the n-gram of the Hidden Markov Model, evaluated for bigram and trigram, and based on three different types of decoding method, in this case forward, backward, and bidirectional. We used the Brown Corpus for the training and the testing phase. The bidirectional trigram model almost reaches state of the art accuracy but is disadvantaged by the decoding speed time while the backward trigram reaches almost the same results with a way better decoding speed time. By these results, we can conclude that the decodi…

Knowledge acquisition through introspection in Human-Robot Cooperation

2018

Abstract When cooperating with a team including humans, robots have to understand and update semantic information concerning the state of the environment. The run-time evaluation and acquisition of new concepts fall in the critical mass learning. It is a cognitive skill that enables the robot to show environmental awareness to complete its tasks successfully. A kind of self-consciousness emerges: the robot activates the introspective mental processes inferring if it owns a domain concept or not, and correctly blends the conceptual meaning of new entities. Many works attempt to simulate human brain functions leading to neural network implementation of consciousness; regrettably, some of thes…

Dual Capability EAM for Agility in Business Capability Building : A Systems Theoretical View

2021

Through two cases of IT-enabled business capability building in large enterprises, this paper elucidates how the systems theory approach can explain the enterprise architecture management (EAM) challenge to support business agility. The observation in both of these cases is that a legacy EAM approach does not adapt to a business development scenario involving agility. This leads to a study of the nature of the challenges in EAM when enabling strategic business moves involving new technologies, at the business unit level. For the type of projects as in these cases, we do not find a fitting paradigm in the EAM literature. Suggested solutions are IT bimodality, or Two Speed IT. However, its co…

Massively parallel computation of atmospheric neutrino oscillations on CUDA-enabled accelerators

2019

Abstract The computation of neutrino flavor transition amplitudes through inhomogeneous matter is a time-consuming step and thus could benefit from optimization and parallelization. Next to reliable parameter estimation of intrinsic physical quantities such as neutrino masses and mixing angles, these transition amplitudes are important in hypothesis testing of potential extensions of the standard model of elementary particle physics, such as additional neutrino flavors. Hence, fast yet precise implementations are of high importance to research. In the recent past, massively parallel accelerators such as CUDA-enabled GPUs featuring thousands of compute units have been widely adopted due to t…

Geometrical Modeling of Non-Stationary Polarimetric Vehicular Radio Channels

2019

This paper presents a geometry-based statistical model (GBSM) of polarimetric wideband multipath radio channels for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications. The proposed model captures the effects of depolarization caused by multipath propagation, and it also accounts for the non-stationary characteristics of wideband V2V channels. This is a novel feature, because the existing polarimetric channel models are built on the assumption that the channel is a wide-sense stationary random process. In the modeling framework described in this paper, the channel depolarization function is given by a linear transformation in the form of a simple rotation matrix. This linear transformation is transpare…
