Uncovering value through exploration of barriers:A perspective on intellectual property rights in a national innovation system

2023

Although for a long time policy has emphasized the role of intellectual property rights as a growth agent facilitating innovation, the literature has called into question this relationship. Critical studies have focused on studying policy frames and protection modes that could transform the intellectual property rights system to be more beneficial. Studies have not, however, focused on the intellectual property rights system stakeholders in cocreating the system. Our study contributes to the literature by uncovering the tensions in developing a national-level intellectual property rights strategy. Using the Delphi method, we draw from a broad stakeholder dialogue to show the barriers for in…

Rational Herding in Reward-Based Crowdfunding: An MTurk Experiment.

2020

Crowdfunding is gaining popularity as a way of financing social sustainable initiatives. We performed a controlled economic experiment in MTurk by simulating a crowdfunding platform and developed a theoretical model that rationalizes herding behavior. The experiment was designed to test and quantify the causal effects of revealing specific information to prospective backers: (i) the number of early contributors already financing the project and (ii) positive opinions of other backers versus those of experts. The results show that early contributions to the campaign and positive opinions of peers act as a reinforcing signal to potential backers and affect backers&rsquo

2021

Social media marketing (SMM) plays an important role in business communication, marketing, operations, and other activities. There is a growing interest among researchers, academicians, and practitioners to understand the role of SMM in business sustainability in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in an emerging economy, like India. Few studies have attempted to understand this role. Thus, the aim of this study is to examine the impact of adopting social media marketing for sustainable business growth of SMEs in an emerging economy. Next, some research questions that aimed to explore the meaning of reputation concept for family businesses have been…

The expatriate’s family as a stakeholder of the firm : a responsibility viewpoint

2016

In this paper we argue for the recognition of the expatriate’s family as a stakeholder of the firm during the expatriation. We demonstrate why the expatriate’s family can be regarded as a stakeholder of the parent company and what kind of a stakeholder the family is. Additionally, we argue that the parent company needs to develop and apply a holistic well-being orientation to show stakeholder responsibility in the international assignment (IA) arena. We apply the theory of stakeholder salience to the IA relationship because it provides a theoretical framework for integrating the family into the expatriation process. Yet this theory does not necessarily provide a framework for assessing the …

Unpacking the link between family socioeconomic status and civic engagement during the transition to adulthood: Do work values play a role?

2017

We investigated whether the link between family-of-origin socioeconomic status (SES) and civic engagement in young adulthood is mediated by youth’s work values, i.e., the desired characteristics of their current or future jobs. We used data from a Finnish study: 2004 (age 16–18, NT1 = 1,301); 2011 (age 23–25, N T2 = 1,096); and 2014 (age 25–27, NT3 = 1,138). A lower family SES in 2004 was negatively related to youth’s civic engagement in 2014. Lower family SES predicted the importance that youth attached to extrinsic job rewards (e.g., good pay) in 2011, but not the importance of intrinsic job rewards (e.g., learning opportunities). Extrinsic work values, in turn, predicted lower civic enga…

Patērētāju tiesības un personalizētās reklāmas: patērētāju ievainojamības izmantošanas risks (Kopsavilkums)

2020

Have you ever received a frighteningly personalised advertisement with a specific product at the moment when you are thinking about buying that product? Digital technologies have huge positive potential, but their uncontrolled use poses many risks. However, the notion that the current direction of technological development is unavoidable and that the problematic aspects of technology simply need to be tolerated poses a much greater threat to the future. Therefore, this paper discusses one of the risks – personalised advertising that seeks to exploit consumer vulnerabilities. Thereby, the aim of the article is to analyse legal problems of targeted and personalised advertising that seeks to e…

Deep and Proximate Determinants of the World Income Distribution

2019

This paper studies the deep and proximate determinants of the evolution of the cross-country distribution of GDP per worker in the period 1960–2008 by a novel method based on an information criterion. We find that countries of our sample follow three distinctive growth regimes identified by two deep determinants, namely life expectancy at birth in 1960 and the share of Catholics in 1965, and that each regime is characterized by non-linearities. Growth regimes appear to be the main cause of the increased inequality and polarization, while technological catch-up, proxied by the initial level of GDP per worker, acts in the opposite direction. Finally, human capital marginally reduces polarizat…

Przedsiębiorstwa stale poszukują nowych sposobów tworzenia przewagi konkurencyjnej. Wśród czynników oddziałujących na jej tworzenie ważne miejsce zajmują potencjały sukcesu przedsiębiorstwa, obejmujące zasoby, zdolności i kompetencje, które mogą dotyczyć m.in. sfery logistyki. Obok potencjałów sukcesu można wyróżnić także tzw. kluczowe procesy biznesu, stanowiące instrumentarium realizacji wyznaczonych celów.
