Nel 1750 l’architetto Giovanni Amico (Trapani 1684-1754) pubblicava il secondo volume de L’architetto pratico, in cui metteva a punto le sue conoscenze teoriche e quelle acquisite in cantiere. Tra i vari temi affrontati, due capitoli riccamente illustrati sono dedicati in particolare ai problemi della costruzione geometrica degli archi e al dimensionamento geometrico degli appoggi in relazione alla luce e alla forma dell’arco stesso. In this paper a method for estimating the crack propagation in components subjected to wide band random processes of loading is presented. The analysis has been carried out considering uniaxial stresses and stationary and gaussian processes. The method uses as input one parameter of the power spectral density (PSD) of the stress process, its variance and 2 parameters of the material and eliminate the need of the integration of the equation of Paris in time domain. The method has been developed by carrying out a significant amount of numerical simulations in which about a thousand different PSDs of different shapes and spectral parameters have been considered.

The role of patient specific morphology and contractility of the left atrial appendage on the thromboembolic risk in atrial fibrillation

The vast majority of thrombi that cause ischemic complications in atrial fibrillation originate in the left atrial appendage. The left atrial appendage is an anatomical structure that starts from the left atrium, characterized by a wide morphological variability between individuals. This work analyses simulated hemodynamic for different patient-specific models of the left atrial appendage, using computational fluid-structure interaction studies, modelling the effect of changes in contractility and shape resulting from atrial fibrillation.
