Fuzzy Multi-Criteria Decision Making: An entropy-based approach to assess tourism sustainability
2019
In this article, we propose a method for ranking tourist destinations and evaluating their performances under a sustainability perspective: a fuzzy multiple criteria decision-making method is applied for determining sustainability performance values and ranking destinations accordingly. We select a set of sustainability evaluation criteria and use a fuzzy analytic hierarchy process to weight the selected criteria. We also optimize each evaluator’s membership function support by means of a fuzzy entropy maximization criteria. A case study is illustrated and results are compared with two data envelopment analysis–based models. The simplicity of the proposed approach along with the easy reada…
Milan-out Criteria and Worse Intention-to-Treat Outcome Postliver Transplantation
2019
Background. Milan criteria are widely used for liver transplantation selection in hepatocellular carcinoma but have been recognized to be too restrictive. Milan-out criteria are increasingly being adopted. Our aim was to analyze if liver transplantation waitlisted Milan-out hepatocellular carcinoma patients have different outcome than Milan patients. Methods. Retrospective study including all consecutive patients with hepatocellular carcinoma admitted in the waiting list for liver transplantation between January 2012 and January 2015. We included 177 patients, 146 of which eventually transplanted. Downstaging was achieved in the Milan-out cases (n = 29) before waitlisting. Results. From dia…
Expanded criteria for liver transplantation in patients with cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma
2008
Orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) selection for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a matter of debate. The Milan criteria (MC) have been largely adopted by the international community. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the survival rates and recurrence probabilities of a new proposal for criteria (up to 3 tumors, each no larger than 5 cm, and a cumulative tumor burden </= 10 cm). Patients with cirrhosis and HCC included on the waiting list (WL) from 1991 to 2006 were retrospectively analyzed. Outcomes in patients who had tumors within and beyond the MC were compared. The survival analysis was done (1) with the intention-to-treat principle and (2) among transplante…
Clinical symptomatic de novo systemic transthyretin amyloidosis 9 years after domino liver transplantation
2009
Four years ago, Stangou et al. reported a patient who developed clinical symptoms of amyloidosis 8 years after domino liver transplantation (DLT). In order to alleviate the graft shortage, livers from patients with familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy (FAP) are used as domino grafts for other patients under the assumption that several decades will pass before clinical symptoms due to amyloid accumulation emerge. We now report on another case, the third reported case in the literature, of de novo systemic amyloidosis in a 75-year-old woman 9 years after DLT. The patient underwent DLT at 65 years of age for hepatocellular carcinoma exceeding the Milan criteria in hepatitis C cirrhosis. Transar…
Turbo-Roundabouts: a Model to Evaluate Capacity, Delays, Queues and Level of Service
2012
A turbo roundabout is a particular type of roundabout where entering and circulating lanes are bounded by traffic signs and by non-mountable curbs. The physical separation between lanes, both at entries and on the ring, helps to prevent side collisions crossing the roundabout. The main advantages of turbo roundabouts are: i) reduction in the number of potential conflict points; ii) lower speed of vehicles passing through the intersection; iii) safety conditions at the intersection due to lower risk of side-by-side accidents. These aspects make turbo-roundabouts more appropriate than roundabouts when a higher level of safety has to be guaranteed, particularly in presence of relevant pedestri…
Ontology-based clinical decision support system applied on diabetes
2017
Master's thesis Information- and communication technology IKT590 - University of Agder 2017 Medical diagnosis is a multi-step process which is complex as it requires the consideration of many factors. Additionally, the accuracy of diagnosis varies depending on the skill and knowledge a physician has in the medical field. Using ICT solution, the physicians can be assisted so that they can make an accurate decision. Many applications have been developed to enhance physician performance and improve the patient outcome, however, the quality of these applications varies depending on knowledge representation methodology and reasoning approach adopted. Nowadays, ontology is being used in many clin…

Task-based visual analytics for interactive multiobjective optimization
2020
We study how visual interaction techniques considered in visual analytics can be utilized when implementing interactive multiobjective optimization methods, where a decision maker iteratively participates in the solution process. We want to benefit from previous research and avoid re-inventing ideas. Our aim is to widen awareness and increase the applicability of interactive methods for solving real-world problems. As a concrete approach, we introduce seven high-level tasks that are relevant for interactive methods. These high-level tasks are based on low-level tasks proposed in the visual analytics literature. In addition, we give an example on how the high-level tasks can be implemented a…
EXPLORING THE EFFECTS OF DISCUSSION AND TEXT PLANNING STRATEGIES TO ENHANCE AND ASSESS WRITTEN COMMUNICATION SKILLS
2016
