TORSIONAL STRESS CONCENTRATIONS IN SHAFTS: FROM ELECTRICAL ANALOGIES TO NUMERICAL METHODS

This paper presents the historical development of methods used for the study of torsional stresses in shafts. In particular the paper covers both analog methods, in particular those based on electrical analogies proposed since about 1925, and numerical methods, in particular finite difference methods (FDM), finite element methods (FEM) and boundary elements (BEM).

Questa memoria considera le caratteristiche della fotoelasticità RGB con riferimento al massimo ordine di frangia rilevabile che dipende dalla modulazione del segnale, dalla sorgente luminosa, dalla presenza di colori simili e dal gradiente delle frange. Le esperienze mostrano che la lampada ad incandescenza consente di rilevare ritardi fino a circa 4 ordini di frangia mentre la lampada a fluorescenza consente di determinare ordini di frangia ben più elevati (12 in questa memoria) grazie alla natura discreta della sorgente.

In questo lavoro viene presentato il restauro della statua in stucco rappresentante l’allegoria della Penitenza di scuola Serpottesca. L’opera si trova nella chiesa di Santa Ninfa dei Crociferi a Palermo e fiancheggia l’altare della cappella della Madonna della Salute insieme all’allegoria della Giustizia. L’opera non è autografa, nulli sono gli atti che ne documentano con certezza l’identità, ma è inequivocabile la sua appartenenza alla scuola dei Serpotta, la più importante bottega di maestri stuccatori del barocco siciliano, il cui massimo esponente è stato Giacomo. The paper is focused on the layout and testing of a workflow for the documentation of archeological remains, addressed to the study, visualization and information data input. Topographic, laser scanning and photogrammetric data have been used to build up 3D textured models of three ancient houses built in Sicily and in Tunisia in the Hellenistic and Roman age. 3D models have been used to extract conventional representations (plans and sections), analyze the geometric and proportional features and propose a virtual reconstruction of the original layout. The advance of information technology has enabled in recent years new fruition scenarios for cultural heritage sites. Multidisciplinary approaches integrate survey techniques with multimodal interfaces to allow enhanced fruition for larger group of users. In this paper we propose a multimodal interface to a virtual representation of a medieval ceiling, built in the XIV century, which covers the “Sala Magna” of Steri, the historical headquarters of the University of Palermo, in Italy. Wooden painted ceilings of the Mediterranean area in the middle age have their origin in the islamic culture and were then spread in the countries under the dominion of the Arabs; some of the surviving ceilings are now located in Sicily and Spain. In the historic centre of Palermo two well preserved medieval ceilings are still surviving; the first, built in the XII century, is located in the Palatine chapel; the second one, built in the XIV century covers the “Sala Magna” in the Steri of Palermo.
