IMPORTANCIA DE LAS PERTURBACIONES EXTERNAS EN LA ECONOMÍA ESPAÑOLA TRAS LA INTEGRACIÓN: ¿TAMAÑO DEL SHOCK O GRADO DE RESPUESTA?
2005
This paper analyses whether the impact of European shocks in the Spanisheconomy has increased after the entry of Spain in the European Community. UsingVAR models, we try to disentangle whether the change in the importance of Europe isdue to a change in the size of the shocks or in the propagation effects. The results showsthat after 1986, despite the decrease in the size of European shocks, their impact on theSpanish business cycle has increases due to a larger sensitivity of the Spanish economyto these shocks. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar si ha aumentado la influencia de los shocks europeos en la economía española tras el proceso de integración en Europa, distinguiendo si los ca…
Los Fondos Estructurales y la ampliación al Este de la Unión Europea
2000
This paper addresses the potential impact of the current European Union (EU) enlargement process on EU economic and social cohesion programmes. The first part highlights the reason why enlargement is a priority for the EU and explains the pre-enlargement strategy carried out in the nineties. The Agenda 2000 proposals and the funding avenues provided for EU enlargement are subsequently examined, assessing the repercussions of enlargement on structural actions and the EU as a whole. One of the main conclusion is that, although it is a difficult process requiring considerable adjustment, it is an excellent opportunity to contribute to political stability and economic and social progress in Eur…
Exchange Rate Arrangements in Central and Eastern European Countries – Evolutions and Characteristics
2007
The process of choosing the exchange rate regime for the new EU member states has been influenced by other criteria than the traditional ones, which belong to macroeconomic criteria. This paper make a comparative analyze of the exchange rate arrangements in Central and Eastern European after 1990. These arrangements are dynamic on the one hand due to their permanent diversification and on the other hand because the values established this way are rapidly changing. In essence, they differ according to the degree of flexibility adopted when the exchange rate is established: from more rigid forms – currency board or pegging the currency to a foreign currency – to free floating.
UME Y LA INTEGRACIÓN DE LOS MERCADOS DE CAPITALES EUROPEOS: RELEVANCIA DEL TIPO DE CAMBIO Y LA INFLACIÓN
2007
The aim of this paper is to investigate the effects of the European Monetary Union on the hypothesis of an integrated European Capital Market from January 1993 to December 2004. The extent of the period and the use of Fama and MacBeth [1973]'s methodology for estimating a large number of international asset pricing models that includes an Adler and Dumas [1983] model with and without domestic factor make possible to evaluate this hypothesis as a process towards a full integration. However, our results show that the integration is not a uniform process at all times and for all stocks and recedes in the period 2001-04 with the reappearance of a significant domestic risk premium (diversifiable…

The two primary research objective are: 1. …
QUALITY AND PRICES OF INTRA-EUROPEAN TRADE OF FOOD-INDUSTRY PRODUCTS
2000
The completion of the European Single Market should bring out an exploitation of comparative advantages in production and trade. It is usually assumed that, given the predominance of intraeuropean trade flows in the global import figures of the European Union, efficiency gains from trade creation could be potentially important. However, the analysis of the effects of the Single Market on trade specialisation with a greater degree of accuracy requires trade quality indicators to be available. This paper uses the theory of index numbers to establish the relative quality levels of the food industry shipments to the European Internal Market from European Union member countries. It is found a po…
Micro evidence for sources of innovation in European countries
2012
This paper investigates sources of product or process innovation, such as investments in research and development, machinery, personnel training and management systems, by examining microdata from eight European countries. We pay particular attention to the effect of research and development in favouring the absorption of new technologies, i.e. the absorptive capacity. Significant positive effects of each source on both product and process innovations are found. Significant evidence of positive absorptive capacity emerges only in firms with low predicted probabilities of introducing innovation.
Social capital formation across space: proximity and trust in European regions
2013
An extensive economics and regional science literature has discussed the importance of social capital for economic growth and development. Yet, what social capital is and how it is formed are elusive issues, which require further investigation. Here, we refer to social capital in terms of “civic” capital and “good culture,” as rephrased by Guiso, Sapienza, and Zingales and Tabellini. The accumulation of this kind of capital allows the emerging of regional informal institutions, which may help explaining differences in regional development. In this article, we take a regional perspective and use exploratory space and space–time methods to assess whether geography, via proximity, contributes…
Impact of organisational practices and language on an international business cooperation : the case of a German-Slovakian corporation
2015
In the course of the EU integration process, Slovakia became a target of choice for German investors. The percentage of German foreign direct investment has increased sharply since 1995. A growing number of German small to medium sized enterprises discover Slovakia as profitable location for outsourcing and offshoring. However, little is known about German-Slovakian corporations and expatriate management in Slovakia. The aim of the study is to get an understanding of the impact of organisational culture and language on one specific case of a German-Slovakian business cooperation. During the study, the research question is divided into three sub-questions: How is the organisational culture c…
