Thermodynamics of the two-dimensional Heisenberg classical honeycomb lattice

In this article we adapt a previous work concerning the two-dimensional (2D) Heisenberg classical square lattice [Physica B 245, 263 (1998)] to the case of a honeycomb lattice. Closed-form expressions of the main thermodynamic functions of interest are derived in the zero-field limit. Notably, near absolute zero (i.e., the critical temperature), we derive the values of the critical exponents $\ensuremath{\alpha}=0,\ensuremath{\eta}=\ensuremath{-}1,\ensuremath{\gamma}=3,$ and $\ensuremath{\nu}=1,$ as for the square lattice, thus proving their universal character. Universality classes for wetting in two-dimensional random-bond systems

Interface-unbinding transitions, such as those arising in wetting phenomena, are studied in two-dimensional systems with quenched random impurities and general interactions. Three distinct universality classes or scaling regimes are investigated using scaling arguments and extensive transfer-matrix calculations. Both the critical exponents and the critical amplitudes are determined for the weak- and the strong-fluctuation regime. In the borderline case of the intermediate-fluctuation regime, the asymptotic regime is not accessible to numerical simulations. We also find strong evidence for a nontrivial delocalization transition of an interface that is pinned to a line of defects.

How Universal is the Scaling Theory of Localization?

The numerical implementation of the one-parameter scaling theory of localization is reviewed for the Anderson model of disordered solids. A finite-size scaling procedure is used to derive the 3D localization length and d.c.-conductivity from the raw data computed for quasi-1D systems by the strip-and-bar method. While a common scaling function can be unambiguously obtained for different distributions of the diagonal disorder in the Anderson model, discrepancies appear between the box and the Gaussian distribution with regard to the derived critical exponents. The exposure of the hybrid detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory

The Pierre Auger Observatory is a detector for ultra-high energy cosmic rays. It consists of a surface array to measure secondary particles at ground level and a fluorescence detector to measure the development of air showers in the atmosphere above the array. The ‘‘hybrid” detection mode combines the information from the two subsystems. We describe the determination of the hybrid exposure for events observed by the fluorescence telescopes in coincidence with at least one water-Cherenkov detector of the surface array. Mercury (Hg) is a ubiquitous heavy metal that originates from both natural and anthropogenic sources and is transformed in the environment to its most toxicant form, methylmercury (MeHg). Recent studies suggest that MeHg exposure can alter epigenetic modifications during embryogenesis. In this study, we examined associations between prenatal MeHg exposure and levels of cord blood DNA methylation (DNAm) by meta-analysis in up to seven independent studies (n = 1462) as well as persistence of those relationships in blood from 7 to 8 year-old children (n = 794). An evaluation of exposure metrics in an epidemiologic study on radio and television broadcast transmitters and the risk of childhood leukemia.

Electric field strength values calculated by wave propagation modeling were applied as an exposure metric in a case–control study conducted in Germany to investigate a possible association between radio frequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) emitted from television and radio broadcast transmitters and the risk of childhood leukemia. To validate this approach it was examined at 850 measurement sites whether calculated RF-EMF are an improvement to an exposure proxy based on distance from the place of residence to a transmitter. Association of Exposure to Ambient Air Pollution With Thyroid Function During Pregnancy

Key Points Question Is exposure to ambient air pollution in the first trimester associated with thyroid function throughout pregnancy? Findings Among 9931 pregnant women in 4 European cohorts and 1 US cohort, an increase of 5 μg/m3 in exposure to particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 μm or less was associated with 20% higher odds of hypothyroxinemia. Meaning The findings of this study raise the possibility that exposure to particulate matter might disrupt thyroid function in pregnant women.
