Cognitive rehabilitation of schizophrenia through NeuroVr training.
2013
Cognitive difficulties are prevalent in people with diagnosis of schizophrenia and are associated with poor long-term functioning. In particular, memory, selective, divided and sustained attention and executive functions are altered by this disease. We used a Virtual Reality environment (developed via the NeuroVr2.0 software) for the rehabilitation of shifting, sustained attention and action planning functions using tasks reminiscent of daily life tasks. Test and retest showed significant differences in the assessed cognitive dimensions.
First and second critical exponents for an inhomogeneous Schrödinger equation with combined nonlinearities
2022
AbstractWe study the large-time behavior of solutions for the inhomogeneous nonlinear Schrödinger equation $$\begin{aligned} iu_t+\Delta u=\lambda |u|^p+\mu |\nabla u|^q+w(x),\quad t>0,\, x\in {\mathbb {R}}^N, \end{aligned}$$ i u t + Δ u = λ | u | p + μ | ∇ u | q + w ( x ) , t > 0 , x ∈ R N , where $$N\ge 1$$ N ≥ 1 , $$p,q>1$$ p , q > 1 , $$\lambda ,\mu \in {\mathbb {C}}$$ λ , μ ∈ C , $$\lambda \ne 0$$ λ ≠ 0 , and $$u(0,\cdot ), w\in L^1_{\mathrm{loc}}({\mathbb {R}}^N,{\mathbb {C}})$$ u ( 0 , · ) , w ∈ L loc 1 ( R N , C ) . We consider both the cases where $$\mu =0$$ μ = 0 and $$\mu \ne 0$$ μ ≠ 0 , respectively. We establish existence/nonexistence of global weak solutions. In ea…
Sequentially Forecasting Economic Indices Using Mixture Linear Combinations of EP Distributions
2021
This article displays an application of the statistical method moti- vated by Bruno de Finetti's operational subjective theory of probability. We use exchangeable forecasting distributions based on mixtures of linear com- binations of exponential power (EP) distributions to forecast the sequence of daily rates of return from the Dow-Jones index of stock prices over a 20 year period. The operational subjective statistical method for comparing distributions is quite different from that commonly used in data analysis, because it rejects the basic tenets underlying the practice of hypothesis test- ing. In its place, proper scoring rules for forecast distributions are used to assess the values o…
B cell immunosenescence in the elderly and in centenarians.
2008
The elderly suffer from an increased susceptibility to infectious disease and cancer. Aging of the immune system contributes to this state of affairs due to immunosenescence. Because repeated intermittent or chronic antigen exposure may lead to lymphocyte clonal exhaustion, chronic antigenic stress plays a part in the compromised immunity of the elderly, who have accumulated a lifetime's exposure to infectious agents, autoantigens, and cancer antigens. Literature on immunosenescence has focused mainly on T cell impairment, but B cell compartment is also affected. The age-dependent B cell changes documented by the present review indicate that advanced age per se is a condition characterized …
Fetal and perinatal desths: drugs exposure duruing pregancy
2009
The presentation of this review will focus attention on the area of pediatric forensic medicine and the importance of through investigation of these deaths not only for the appropriate classification of the cause adn manner of deaths, but for complete documentation of toxicological data and pathological findings wich may provide essential informations about the circumstances surrounding the death and possible contributory mechanism.
DOES STILL EXIST A CORRELATION BETWEEN X-RAYS OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE AND BENIGN NODULAR THYROID DISEASE?
2019
Objective: The prevalence of benign nodular thyroid disease in the general population is high, as shown by various studies, and the diagnosis is eased by the improved diagnostic capacity of the instruments used. The aim of the present study is the evaluation of occupational exposure to ionizing radiation as a possible significant risk factor in the determinism of this pathology. Method: A cross-sectional observational study in “A category” X-ray exposed workers (doctors, nurses, technicians) of the University Hospital of Palermo, compared with a sample of the general population, was carried out from June 2016 to June 2017. We evaluated data obtained from the Personal Health Records, includi…
An aggregate air quality index considering interactions among pollutants
2009
Several countries provide an Air Quality Index (AQI) to communicate air pollution, but there is not a unique and nternationally accepted methodology for constructing it. The most of the proposed indices are based on the USA AQI by EPA and are defined by the value of the pollutant with the highest concentration. For each pollutant, a sub-index is computed by linear interpolation according to the grid in a table, but the breakpoints of such a table may differ from one country to another, as well as the descriptors of each category, the air quality standards, the functions chosen as daily synthesis to aggregate hourly values at each site for each pollutant, and so on. Anyway the main drawback …
Ice deformed in compression and simple shear: control of temperature and initial fabric
2012
AbstractLayered and polycrystalline ice was experimentally deformed in general shear involving axial compression (strain magnitude 0.5-17%) and simple shear (strain magnitude γ = 0.1-1.4). As the temperature is increased from -20°C to -2°C, there is at least a twofold enhancement in octahedral shear strain rate, which coincides with the onset of extensive dynamic recrystallization and a change in grain-size distribution at -15°C. Between -150C and -10°C the c-axis preferred orientation rapidly evolves with the initiation of two-maxima fabrics in shear zones. From -10°C to -2°C there is progressive evolution of a final c-axis pattern that is asymmetric with respect to the direction of shorte…
Real-time High Dynamic Range based on Multiple Non Destructive ReadOut during a Single Exposure
2017
This paper presents a new method based on Non Destructive Readout (NDRO) to improve multi-exposure High Dynamic Range (HDR) Imaging. A sequence of Low-Dynamic Range (LDR) images can then be acquired during a single exposure. The concept enables the latency between LDR images to be removed as well as the intrinsic ghost artifacts observed using state-of-art HDR systems based on multi-exposures. The method has been applied to improve the performances of HDR sensor based on logarithmic pixels. Using the NDRO method, a Short Wave InfraRed (SWIR) camera has been designed to produce HDR IR videos. A real-time HDR video stream generation is achieved based on GPU implantation.
Environmental Noise and the Cardiovascular System
2018
Abstract Noise has been found associated with annoyance, stress, sleep disturbance, and impaired cognitive performance. Furthermore, epidemiological studies have found that environmental noise is associated with an increased incidence of arterial hypertension, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and stroke. Observational and translational studies indicate that especially nighttime noise increases levels of stress hormones and vascular oxidative stress, which may lead to endothelial dysfunction and arterial hypertension. Novel experimental studies found aircraft noise to be associated with oxidative stress–induced vascular damage, mediated by activation of the NADPH oxidase, uncoupling of …
