Abstract Long-term operational stability of biotrickling filters (BTFs) degrading volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is dependent on both physicochemical as well as biological properties. Improved resolution power of electrophoretic fractionation of DNA using a voltage gradient up and down application

The improved resolution power of electrophoretic fractionation of DNA in a wide range of molecular masses is demonstrated using an "up and down" application of voltage gradient gel electrophoresis (VGGE). This application also allows separation of different DNA fragments which are poorly fractionated in conventional electrophoresis.

Orthogonal electrophoretic fractionation of DNA in agarose gels.

We developed an electrophoretic procedure, using Voltage Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (VGGE), which allows to obtain both an improvement of the resolution power of the system in orthogonal fractionation of DNA and, mainly, an about fourfold enhancement of hybridization signals in Southern blotting applications.

Effects of heat treatment on hydrogen production potential and microbial community of thermophilic compost enrichment cultures

Cellulosic plant and waste materials are potential resources for fermentative hydrogen production. In this study, hydrogen producing, cellulolytic cultures were enriched from compost material at 52, 60 and 70°C. Highest cellulose degradation and highest H(2) yield were 57% and 1.4 mol-H(2) mol-hexose(-1) (2.4 mol-H(2) mol-hexose-degraded(-1)), respectively, obtained at 52°C with the heat-treated (80°C for 20 min) enrichment culture. Heat-treatments as well as the sequential enrichments decreased the diversity of microbial communities. Polymorphism of mytilin B mRNA is not traslated into mature peptide

Diversity of mRNAs from mytilin B, one of the five mytilins identified in the Mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, has been investigated from circulating hemocytes. One mussel expressed simultaneously two to ten different mytilin B mRNAs as observed in denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), defining 10 individual DGGE patterns (named A to J) within the mussels from Messina, Sicily (Italy). Three patterns accounted for 79% of the individuals whereas other patterns were found in only 2-7% of the 57 analyzed mussels. Isolation and Characterization of Novosphingobium sp. Strain MT1, a Dominant Polychlorophenol-Degrading Strain in a Groundwater Bioremediation System

ABSTRACT A high-rate fluidized-bed bioreactor has been treating polychlorophenol-contaminated groundwater in southern Finland at 5 to 8°C for over 6 years. We examined the microbial diversity of the bioreactor using three 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA)-based methods: denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis, length heterogeneity-PCR analysis, and restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. The molecular study revealed that the process was dependent on a stable bacterial community with low species diversity. Microbial analysis of raw cows' milk used for cheese-making: influence of storage treatments on microbial composition and other technological traits

Raw milk used to produce Grana cheese was subjected to several treatment regimes, including varying temperatures and storage times. Milk from morning and evening milking were transferred to a dairy factory sepa- rately (double delivery) or together (single delivery), after storage at the farm for 12 h; in the former case, milk was stored at 12 or 8°C, whereas, in the latter, it was kept at ambient temperature or 18°C.
