Pro-Degradant Activity of Naturally Occurring Compounds on Polyethylene in Accelerate Weathering Conditions
2019
In this work, naturally occurring compounds, such as Vitamin E (VE) and Ferulic Acid (FA), at high concentrations, have been considered as pro-degradant agents for Low Density Polyethylene (PE). However, all obtained results using the naturally occurring molecules as pro-oxidant agents for PE have been compared with the results achieved using a classical pro-oxidant agent, such as calcium stearate (Ca stearate) and with neat PE. The preliminary characterization, through rheological, mechanical and thermal analysis, of the PE-based systems highlights that the used naturally occurring molecules are able to exert a slight plasticizing action on PE and subsequently the PE rigidity and crystalli…
Metallocenes and post-metallocenes immobilized on ionic liquid-modified silica as catalysts for polymerization of ethylene
2014
Abstract The supported ionic liquid (SIL) strategy was used for the first time to metallocene and post-metallocene heterogeneous catalysts for olefin polymerization. The metal complexes: Cp2TiCl2, Cp2ZrCl2, FI–Ti, and Sal–Ti were immobilized in the 1-(3-triethoxysilyl)propyl-3-methylimidazolium alkylchloroaluminate ionic liquid, anchored on the surface of the mesoporous amorphous silica. The SIL systems were characterized by FTIR, 29Si NMR, N2 adsorption, EA, AAS, TG, and SEM techniques. The developed supported catalytic systems were found to be active in the ethylene polymerization and produce the polyethylene of various properties.
Comparative Investigation on the Soil Burial Degradation Behaviour of Polymer Films for Agriculture before and after Photo-Oxidation
2020
Polymer films based on biodegradable polymers, polyethylene (PE) and modified PE with oxo-degradable additive were prepared by film blowing. Carbon black (1%) was added to all the films. Commercial biodegradable Ecovio®
The role of the matrix-filler affinity on morphology and properties of polyethylene/clay and polyethylene/ compatibilizer/clay nanocomposites drawn f…
2009
In this work the structural variations and mechanical performance of polyethylene/clay nanocomposite drawn fibres, also in the presence ofcompatibilizer, such as a commercial maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene, PEgMA, was studied. In the isotropic state both systems show intercalated morphology. After spinning and cold drawing, by adding the nanoparticles, the tensile strength as a function of the draw ratio increases and this rise is more pronounced for the filled compatibilized system. The reduction of the elongation at break, on the contrary, is about the same for all the examined samples. The orientation of the macromolecules, evaluated by measurements of the birefringence and calorim…
Competition between chain scission and branching formation in the processing of high-density polyethylene: effect of processing parameters and of sta…
2009
Two samples of high-density polyethylene with different molecular weight were processed in a batch mixer and the rheological and structural properties were investigated. In particular, the effect of different processing parameters and the eventual presence of different stabilizers were evaluated. Actually, two reactions may occur during processing: branching/crosslinking or chain scission. The results indicate that when the processing conditions promote a scarce mobility of the macromolecular chains (lower temperatures, lower mixing speed, and higher molecular weight), branching is more favored than chain scission. On increasing the mobility of the chain (higher temperature, higher mixing s…
On the effectiveness of different additives and concentrations on the re-building of the molecular structure of degraded polyethylene
2006
Mechanical recycling is an easy and economic way to re-use plastic waste as secondary materials, but, in general, their properties are worse with respect to the reclaimed materials and the virgin polymer. The aim of this work was to study the effect of concentration and reaction kinetics of two additives, an ethylene-co-glycidyl methacrylate (Lotader) and a hydroxylamine derivative (CGX), in the re-building of a degraded polyethylene. CGX is a nitroxyl radical generator able to form branching in polyolefins while the epoxy groups of Lotader can react with the functional groups present in the recycled polyethylene. The results indicate that the CGX has a higher reaction rate than Lotader, pr…
An investigation of the compatibilization of blends of polyethylene and a semirigid liquid crystalline polymer
1996
The mechanical properties of blends with liquid crystalline polymers are in general poor and lower than those expected on the basis of additivity rule because of the strong incompatibility between the flexible and rigid components. Compatibilization is then necessary to enhance the adhesion between the two phases and then to improve the final properties of these blends. The addition of maleic anhydride functionalized polymers could give rise to some compatibilization because of possible reactions between the maleic anhydride group and the end groups of the liquid crystalline polymers. These reactions do not seem to occur in blends of polyethylene and a semirigid liquid crystalline polymer. …
Influence of accelerated ageing conditions on the process of polyolefines degradation
2003
The process of polymers weathering and the methods of polymers weathering and accelerated ageing investigations were characterized. Accelerated ageing tests of polyethylene and polypropylene samples have been done in laboratory conditions. The ageing time (up to 400 h) influence, at various levels of ageing factors: UV radiation intensity (80—190 W/m2), temperature (35—55 °C) and humidity (30—90%), on the changes of the structures of polymers investigated (shares of carbonyl and olefinic groups from FT-IR spectra — Fig. 1, 2, 4 and 5), on the changes of polymers molecular weights (Fig. 3 and 6, Table 1) and on the changes of mechanical properties during tension (Table 1) has been investigat…
Rheological Properties of Different Film Blowing Polyethylene Samples Under Shear and Elongational Flow
2005
Summary: The rheological behavior of polyethylenes ismainly dominated by the molecular weight, the molecularweight distribution and by the type, the amount and thedistribution of the chain branches. In this work a linearmetallocenecatalyzedpolyethylene(m-PE),abranchedme-tallocene catalyzed polyethylene (m-bPE), a conventionallinear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) and a low densitypolyethylene (LDPE) have been investigated in order tocompare their rheological behavior in shear and in elonga-tional flow. The four samples have similar melt flow indexand in particular a value typical of film blowing grade. The melt viscosity has been studied both in shear and inisothermal and non-isothermal elonga…
Low-temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction and high-pressure Raman studies on [(CH3)2NH2]2[SbCl5]
2007
The structure of bis(dimethylammonium) pentachloroantimonate(III), [(CH{sub 3}){sub 2}NH{sub 2}]{sub 2}[SbCl{sub 5}], BDP, was studied at 15 K and ambient pressure by single-crystal X-ray diffraction as well as at ambient temperature and high pressures up to 4.87(5) GPa by Raman spectroscopy. BDP crystallizes in the orthorhombic Pnma space group with a=8.4069(4), b=11.7973(7), c=14.8496(7) A, and Z=4; R{sub 1}=0.0381, wR{sub 2}=0.0764. The structure consists of distorted [SbCl{sub 6}]{sup 3-} octahedra forming zig-zag [{l_brace}SbCl{sub 5}{r_brace}{sub n}]{sup 2n-} chains that are cross-linked by dimethylammonium [(CH{sub 3}){sub 2}NH{sub 2}]{sup +} cations. The organic and inorganic substr…
