Therapy with non-invasive ventilation in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea: effects on atherogenic lipoprotein phenotype.

2009

Patients with obstructive sleep apnoea are at increased risk of atherosclerotic morbidity and mortality. Abnormalities in lipid metabolism that occur in response to chronic intermittent hypoxia in patients with sleep-disordered breathing may increase the cardiovascular risk in an already susceptible population. Atherogenic lipoprotein phenotype and small, dense LDL have an independent predictive role for future cardio- and cerebro-vascular events in patients with the metabolic syndrome. Therefore, testing the hypothesis that therapy of obstructive sleep apnoea may reduce atherogenic lipoprotein phenotype might have significant clinical implications. We suggest that abolition of obstructive …

El papel de la dislipemia aterogénica en las guías de práctica clínica.

2016

Background and objective Atherogenic dyslipidaemia is underdiagnosed, undertreated, and under-controlled. The aim of the present study was to assess the positioning of clinical guidelines as regards atherogenic dyslipidaemia. Material and method The major clinical guidelines of scientific societies or official agencies issued between January 1, 2012 and March 31, 2015 were collected from the MEDLINE database. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, triglycerides, atherogenic dyslipidaemia, non-HDL cholesterol, and apolipoprotein (apo) B were gathered from the 10 selected guidelines, and it was assessed whether these parameters were considered a cardiovascular risk factor, a therapeutic …

Postprandial metabolism: from research to clinical practice.

2013

Over the last decade, the importance of postprandial metabolism has increased, given that it is the physiological state of humans in modern society. Moreover, postprandial lipemia is considered as a key player in the development of the most important cardiometabolic diseases. In this regard, postprandial lipemia has become more important, since it has been demonstrated that nonfasting triglycerides (TGs) are independent predictors of the risk of cardio vascular disease (CVD) [1,2]. Interestingly, the postprandial phase has been associated with increased inflammation and oxidation, which influences vascular function through a permanent endothelial aggression by atherogenic lipoprotein. TGs a…

Not all women diagnosed with PCOS share the same cardiovascular risk profiles

2009

Although definitive and confirmatory data are lacking, women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are considered to be at increased risk for cardiovascular and metabolic disease. In recent years, the diagnosis of PCOS has broadened considerably to result in several phenotypes. Here we review the evidence for cardiovascular and metabolic risks in PCOS in the classic disorder and the various phenotypes. We conclude that not all women with PCOS should be considered as being similar in terms of cardiovascular risk profiles.

Enfermedad del hígado graso no alcohólico, asociación con la enfermedad cardiovascular y tratamiento ( I ). Enfermedad del hígado graso no alcohólico…

2017

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) comprises a series of histologically lesions similar to those induced by alcohol consumption in people with very little or no liver damage. The importance of NAFLD is its high prevalence in the Western world and, from the point of view of the liver, in its gradual progression from steatosis to steatohepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. During the last decade it has been observed that NAFLD leads to an increased cardiovascular risk with acceleration of arteriosclerosis and events related to it, being the main cause of its morbidity and mortality. This review, updated to January 2016, consists of two parts, with the first part analysing the associa…

Nonceliac gluten sensitivity.

2014

During the past decade there has been an impressive increase in popularity of the gluten-free diet (GFD)—now the most trendy alimentary habit in the United States and other countries. According to recent surveys, as many as 100 million Americans will consume gluten-free products within a year. Operating under the concept that the GFD benefits only individuals with celiac disease, health care professionals have struggled to separate the wheat from the chaff; there are claims that eliminating gluten from the diet increases health and helps with weight loss, or even that gluten can be harmful to every human being. However, apart from unfounded trends, a disorder related to ingestion of gluten …

Vergleich des Hypoglykämieempfindens und der hormonellen Gegenregulation während einer kontrollierten Hypoglykämie: Ein Beitrag zur Diagnostik des Hy…

2008

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Diabetics with abnormal hypoglycaemia awareness cannot recognize hypoglycaemic symptoms early and adequately enough to respond, thus endangering in everyday life not only themselves but also others. Thus it is important to diagnose such symptoms early and assess the extent to which the diabetic is at risk of severe hypoglycaemia. This study was designed to contribute to the evaluation of hypoglycaemia awareness in type 1 (IDDM) diabetics. PATIENTS AND METHODS In 57 diabetics (IDDM) awareness of typical hypoglycaemic warning symptoms and of hormonal counterregulation were tested during controlled induced hypoglycaemia. A questionnaire was used to measure at fixed tim…

Outcome of pregnancy in type 1 diabetic patients treated with insulin lispro or regular insulin: an Italian experience.

2008

Some studies have shown that fetal outcome observed in patients using insulin lispro is much the same as in pregnant women using regular insulin. This study aims to analyze the Italian data emerging from a multinational, multicenter, retrospective study on mothers with type 1 diabetes mellitus before pregnancy, comparing those treated with insulin lispro for at least 3 months before and 3 months after conception with those treated with regular insulin. The data collected on pregnant women with diabetes attending 15 Italian centers from 1998 to 2001 included: HbA1c at conception and during the first and third trimesters, frequency of severe hypoglycemic episodes, spontaneous abortions, mode …

Concurrent strength and sprint training increases resting metabolic rate in masters road cyclists

2020

High-intensity concurrent sprint and strength training has been shown to provide a strong physiological training stimulus in young adult endurance athletes. However, the effect in veteran endurance athletes remains unknown. This study examined if replacing a portion of endurance training with concurrent sprint and strength training influenced resting metabolic rate (RMR) and lean mass (LM) in veteran endurance cyclists. Eighteen well-trained male veteran road cyclists (55.2 ± 8.4 years; 7.9 ± 1.1 training hrs/wk; 323 ± 53 Wpeak) were allocated to a concurrent strength and sprint training group (CT, n = 9) or control group (CON, n = 9). The CT group completed a 12-weeks of sprint and strengt…
