Effect of the lemon essential oils on the safety and sensory quality of salted sardines (Sardina pilchardus Walbaum 1792)

The main aim of this research was to investigate the biopreservative effects of lemon essential oil (EO) micro-emulsions on salted sardines. The experimental design included two experimental trials, SR1 and SR2 carried out with 25 ml of lemon EO micro-emulsion at 0.3 and 1.0% (v/v), respectively, and a control trial performed without EO addition. Chemical analyses on salted sardines inoculated with the EOs clearly showed a substantial persistence of several volatile organic compounds (VOCs) belonging to groups of monoterpene hydrocarbons, oxygenated monoterpenes and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons derived from EOs during the entire period of ripening. Two-phase flow of liquid–liquid mixture in the range of the water droplet pattern

Abstract Phenomena accompanying flow of water–oil mixture during droplet flow of water in oil have been described. Aims used in the determination of characteristic parameters in two-phase liquid–liquid flow have been presented. The method for calculating the equivalent viscosity and pressure drop during flow of liquid–liquid mixture in the range of the water droplet pattern has been given.

Neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, have common features: protein accumulation, cell death with mitochondrial involvement and oxidative stress. Patients are treated to cure the symptoms, but the treatments do not target the causes; so, the disease is not stopped. It is interesting to look at the side of nutrition which could help prevent the first signs of the disease or slow its progression in addition to existing therapeutic strategies. Evaluation of the Effects of the Enriched-Organic Diets Composition on European Sea Bass Welfare through a Multi-Parametric Approach

Three groups of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) were fed for seven months, with either a conventional diet or two different organic diets, which contain organic vegetables and a natural antioxidant compound. The two organic diets differed themselves in terms of raw proteins, fish oil, and lipid contents. Sea bass welfare condition was assessed in relation to these three diets, using 16 different indicators. Phytochemical Studies on Ptilostemon greuteri Raimondo & Domina (Compositae)

Ptilostemon greuteri Raimondo & Domina is described as a new species and its growth is limited to the area of the province of Trapani. Essential oils of aerial parts of P. greuteri were analized by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The analysis of acetonic extract of aerial parts led to identification of triterpenes components: α-amyrin, β-amyrin, α-amyrin acetate, β-amyrin acetate, lupeol, lupeol acetate and taraxasterol. CC and preparative TLC of acetonic extracts has yielded lignan lactone and a sesquiterpene lactone that have been isolated previously from other Ptilostemon species.

Chemical composition and antibacterial activity of essential oil of Pulicaria odora L.

The chemical composition of the volatile oil constituent from Pulicaria odora L. roots has been analyzed by GC/MS. Twenty-seven components were identified, being thymol (47.83%) and its derivative isobutyrate (30.05%) the main constituents in the oil. Furthermore, the oil was tested against seven bacteria at different concentrations. Results showed that the oil exhibited a significant antibacterial activity.

Diagnosis of a Case of Lipoid Pneumonia by Bronchoalveolar Lavage

Exogenous lipoid pneumonia (ELP) was diagnosed by bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) in a 57-year-old woman with a long history of using oily nose drops. Since clinical and roentgenological presentations are nonspecific, BAL, along with specific staining of recovered alveolar macrophages, represents a safe alternative to more invasive diagnostic procedures whenever a diagnosis of ELP is suspected.

Attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), followed by multivariate treatment of the spectral data, was used to classify seed oils of the genus Cucurbita (pumpkins) according to their species as C. maxima, C. pepo, and C. moschata. Also, C. moschata seed oils were classified according to their genetic variety as RG, Inivit C-88, and Inivit C-2000.
