Phase equilibrium constraints on a deep crustal metamorphic field gradient: metapelitic rocks from the Ivrea Zone (NW Italy)

The metamorphic rocks of the Ivrea Zone in NW Italy preserve a deep crustal metamorphic field gradient. Application of quantitative phase equilibria methods to metapelitic rocks provides new constraints on the P–T conditions recorded in Val Strona di Omegna, Val Sesia and Val Strona di Postua. In Val Strona di Omegna, the metapelitic rocks show a structural and mineralogical change from mica‐schists with the common assemblage bi–mu–sill–pl–q–ilm ± liq at the lowest grades, through metatexitic migmatites (g–sill–bi–ksp–pl–q–ilm–liq) at intermediate grades, to complex diatexitic migmatites (g–sill–ru–bi–ksp–pl–q–ilm–liq) at the highest grades. Rare earth elements and hydrothermal ore formation processes

Abstract The geochemical behaviour of REE is influenced by nearly all important hydrothermal ore formation processes including fluid-rock interactions, fluid precipitations, adsorption and scavenging onto particles, and changes in fluid temperature, pressure, pH, Eh, alkalinity and ligand concentration. Destabilization of REE complexes in response to these physicochemical changes and possible chemical-crystallographic controls determine the concentration and distribution of REE within hydrothermal minerals, mineraloids and amorphous phases. Stepwise accumulation and ascent of magmas

One of the currently popular theories on magma ascent is that it mainly occurs by propagating hydrofractures (dykes) and that magma viscosity is the primary rate-controlling factor. This theory is based on mathematical models for single hydrofractures under idealised conditions. We simulated magma ascent with air ascending through gelatine and observed that the air ascended in batches, following paths made by their predecessors. Multiple batches accumulate at obstacles along the path. Although magma viscosity may control ascent rate during movement, obstacles ultimately control the size and average ascent velocity of ascending batches. Geochemical surveillance of the Solfatara of Pozzuoli (Phlegraean Fields) during 1983

Geochemical surveillance of the Phlegraean Fields area has been intensified since 1983, in response to the increased uplift rate (brady-seismic activity). Fumarolic gases from Solfatara (Pozzuoli) were sampled and analyzed monthly. A Reducing Capacity (RC) monitoring unit was installed at Soffione, the most active fumarole in the Solfatara system. The preliminary analysis of the RC temporal variations suggest they are consistent with the rate of the seismic energy release. The composition of fumarolic gases indicates that the equilibrium temperature and pressure are higher than those of sampling. Abstract We present SHRIMP U–Pb ages and REE data for zircon of two granulites, a garnet pyroxenite and a clinopyroxene amphibolite from the North Dabie complex. The North Dabie complex is a major fault-bounded petrotectonic unit in the Dabie continental collisional orogen between the South and North China Blocks. Zircon REE data are applied to link ages to specific petrological processes. In addition to SHRIMP zircon U–Pb dating, measurements were made on monazites from a HP–UHT metapsammitic granulite. Metamorphic zircon grains and coeval overgrowths on detrital cores from one granulite yielded a weighted mean 207Pb/206Pb age of 2042 ± 7 Ma, corresponding to peak HP/UHT metamorphism. The …

Abstract Textural and compositional variations of apatite from the plutonic Ilimaussaq complex in South Greenland and its surrounding country rocks track magmatic and metasomatic processes. Detailed back-scattered electron (BSE) imaging reveals various types of apatite textures including (i) growth zonation (concentric, oscillatory as well as sector zonation) formed during magmatic differentiation, (ii) resorption and overgrowth textures due to fluid/melt induced metasomatic overprint of precursor apatite and (iii) replacement textures indicating the destabilization of apatite in favor of monazite. Single zircon ages for granitoid gneisses in the Central Zone of the Limpopo Belt, Southern Africa and geodynamic significance

Abstract Ion microprobe, evaporation and vapour digestion single zircon emplacement ages for granitoid rocks throughout the Central Zone (CZ) of the Limpopo mobile belt, South Africa define three broad age groups, namely at 3188–3314, 2637–2734 and ca 2500 Ma, respectively. All these granitoids, including the youngest group, display polydeformational features suggesting that much of the tectonic history of the CZ occurred in the late Archaean and early Proterozoic. Hydrothermal fluid venting in the offshore sector of Campi Flegrei caldera: A geochemical, geophysical, and volcanological study

The ongoing unrest at the Campi Flegrei caldera (CFc) in southern Italy is prompting exploration of its poorly studied offshore sector. We report on a multidisciplinary investigation of the Secca delle Fumose (SdF), a submarine relief known since antiquity as the largest degassing structure of the offshore sector of CFc. We combined high-resolution morphobathymetric and seismostratigraphic data with onshore geological information to propose that the present-day SdF morphology and structure developed during the initial stages of the last CFc eruption at Monte Nuovo in AD 1538.
