The Bossons glacier protects Europe's summit from erosion

13 pages; International audience; The contrasting efficiency of erosion beneath cold glacier ice, beneath temperate glacier ice, and on ice-free mountain slopes is one of the key parameters in the development of relief during glacial periods. Detrital geochronology has been applied to the subglacial streams of the north face of the Mont-Blanc massif in order to estimate the efficiency of erosional processes there. Lithologically this area is composed of granite intruded at ~303 Ma within an older polymetamorphic complex. Arsenite adsorption on goethite at elevated temperatures

Abstract Experimental closed-system ΔT acid–base titrations between 10 °C and 75 °C were used to constrain a temperature-dependent 1-pK basic Stern model of the goethite surface complexation reactions. Experimental data for the temperature dependence of pHPZC determined by the one-term Van’t Hoff extrapolation yield a value for goethite surface protonation enthalpy of −49.6 kJ mol−1 in good agreement with literature data. Batch titration data between 10 °C and 75 °C with arsenite concentrations between 10 μM and 100 μM yield adsorption curves, which increases with pH, peak at a pH of 9, and decrease at higher pH values. Effect of pH on the mobility of the herbicide MCPA in a sand-goethite column: 1D and 2D reactive transport modeling

Abstract Adsorption and transport of the herbicide 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) in a homogeneous sand-goethite system were investigated as a function of pH. Interaction of MCPA with the solid surface was geochemically modeled according to the charge distribution multisite complexation (CD-MUSIC) approach. Based on this calibration, retardation of MCPA transport in column experiments was significantly underestimated by conventional 1D simulations. As a new approach, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) was employed to analyze the flow field, using 18F− as a radiotracer. Silicate adsorption by goethite at elevated temperatures

Abstract Batch adsorption experiments with relatively low silica concentrations between 10 µM and 100 µM were conducted at three different ionic strength (0.01  − 0.1 M), and four different temperatures between 10 °C and 75 °C, yielding in a total of 550 experimental data points. The residual concentration of monosilicic acid is controlled by an adsorption equilibrium which is dependent on pH. The % Si adsorbed vs. − log[H + ] curves reveal an upward bend with a maximum at about a pH of 9. With acidification below pH 9 the residual Si concentration in the suspensions steadily increases, as well as in the increasingly alkaline pH range. Abstract Mossbauer backscattering spectra of eight Martian rocks, acquired by the MIMOS II spectrometer of Rover Spirit (MER-A) and containing goethite in addition to other iron minerals, have been selected for in-depth numerical analysis. Where feasible, different temperature windows for a given rock were considered. A novel calibration/folding procedure, exclusively based on the fitted positions of the eight prominent absorption lines in the transmission spectra of the reference target and not relying on the error signal of the MIMOS II spectrometer, has been developed. Abstract The high grade gneiss assemblage of central and southern Malawi belongs to the Neoproterozoic Mozambique belt of East Africa, and reached peak metamorphic conditions at 900±70°C and 9.5±1.5 kbar, followed by an isobaric cooling path. We report single zircon U–Pb and Pb–Pb ages and Nd isotopic data for orthogneisses and metapelites collected around Lilongwe and farther south in the region around Blantyre and Zomba. Multistage Tectonism and Metamorphism During Gondwana Collision: Baladiyah Complex, Saudi Arabia

Field evidence from the Baladiyah complex in the northern part of the Arabian^Nubian Shield of Saudi Arabia indicates several erosional unconformities separating different high- and medium-grade metasedimentary sequences. This suggests that the collision between East and West Gondwana involved several cycles of exhumation and burial, providing a unique opportunity to study the multiple stages of this orogeny. A mineral equilibria approach and thermodynamic modeling are used to place constraints on the formation conditions of each of these cycles. Metapelitic granulites from the Anosyen domain of southeastern Madagascar are exposed in three intercalated formations: the Amparihy, Bakika and Ihosy formations. Although mineralogically distinct from each other, the rocks from these formations show very similar bulk-rock compositions when measured on a FeT basis. The preserved mineral assemblages thus do not reflect differences in the ratios of the main rock-forming oxides (i.e. Al2O3:FeT:MgO), but instead reflect variations in the pre-metamorphic oxidation state of the protolith rocks. Abstract We report on the first occurrence of Pan-African eclogite from the Mozambique belt of northern Malawi, east-central Africa. We describe aspects of (1) the pattern of Pan-African transcurrent and subhorizontal shear zones and how these shear zones relate to eclogite-facies metamorphism and (2) the P – T – t evolution of the eclogite. Finally, we discuss the significance of eclogite-facies metamorphism and shear-zone deformation for the assembly of Gondwana.
