Multimodal user interface for a semi-robotic visual assistance system for image guided neurosurgery

2005

Abstract We developed a visual assistance system for image guided neurosurgery, consisting of a stereoscopic digital camera (exoscope) mounted on a semi-robotic manipulator. In order to minimize the operation time, the application-specific multimodal user interface enables hands-free manipulation of the exoscope. The surgeon wears thereby a head-mounted unit with a binocular display, a head tracker, a microphone and earphones. Different modes of view positioning and adjustment can be selected by voice and controlled by head rotation while pressing a miniature confirmation button mounted on a finger ring or suction device. Apart from the development of the mechatronic and software modules of…

Unsupervised tissue classification of brain MR images for voxel-based morphometry analysis

2016

In this article, a fully unsupervised method for brain tissue segmentation of T1-weighted MRI 3D volumes is proposed. The method uses the Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) clustering algorithm and a Fully Connected Cascade Neural Network (FCCNN) classifier. Traditional manual segmentation methods require neuro-radiological expertise and significant time while semiautomatic methods depend on parameter's setup and trial-and-error methodologies that may lead to high intraoperator/interoperator variability. The proposed method selects the most useful MRI data according to FCM fuzziness values and trains the FCCNN to learn to classify brain’ tissues into White Matter, Gray Matter, and Cerebro-Spinal Fluid in …

The effect of body shape and gender on wireless Body Area Network on-body channels

2010

Technological advancements have made possible the emergence of Body Area Networks (BANs). There are numerous on-body channel characterizations in the literature performed on a phantom or a single human subject. In this paper, using multiple subjects, we consider the effect of body shape and gender on the on-body channel. A characterization of a narrowband on-body to on-body channel among different subjects is presented. The paper investigates the relationship between the propagation and the subject's physical characteristics. The investigation is performed at 2360 MHz; the new medical band undergoing FCC approval. Our results show that the path loss in women is less than that in men and the…

Dosimetric perturbations of a lead shield for surface and interstitial high-dose-rate brachytherapy.

2014

In surface and interstitial high-dose-rate brachytherapy with either (60)Co, (192)Ir, or (169)Yb sources, some radiosensitive organs near the surface may be exposed to high absorbed doses. This may be reduced by covering the implants with a lead shield on the body surface, which results in dosimetric perturbations. Monte Carlo simulations in Geant4 were performed for the three radionuclides placed at a single dwell position. Four different shield thicknesses (0, 3, 6, and 10 mm) and three different source depths (0, 5, and 10 mm) in water were considered, with the lead shield placed at the phantom surface. Backscatter dose enhancement and transmission data were obtained for the lead shields…

A generic TG-186 shielded applicator for commissioning model-based dose calculation algorithms for high-dose-rate Ir-192 brachytherapy

2017

PurposeA joint working group was created by the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO), and the Australasian Brachytherapy Group (ABG) with the charge, among others, to develop a set of well-defined test case plans and perform calculations and comparisons with model-based dose calculation algorithms (MBDCAs). Its main goal is to facilitate a smooth transition from the AAPM Task Group No. 43 (TG-43) dose calculation formalism, widely being used in clinical practice for brachytherapy, to the one proposed by Task Group No. 186 (TG-186) for MBDCAs. To do so, in this work a hypothetical, generic high-dose rate (HDR) Ir-19…

Comparison of Elastic and Rigid Registration during Magnetic Resonance Imaging/Ultrasound Fusion-Guided Prostate Biopsy: A Multi-Operator Phantom Stu…

2018

The relative value of rigid or elastic registration during magnetic resonance imaging/ultrasound fusion guided prostate biopsy has been poorly studied. We compared registration errors (the distance between a region of interest and fiducial markers) between rigid and elastic registration during fusion guided prostate biopsy using a prostate phantom model.Four gold fiducial markers visible on magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound were placed throughout 1 phantom prostate model. The phantom underwent magnetic resonance imaging and the fiducial markers were labeled as regions of interest. An experienced user and a novice user of fusion guided prostate biopsy targeted regions of interest and…

Phantom development for daily checks in electron intraoperative radiotherapy with a mobile linac.

2020

Abstract Purpose IORT with mobile linear accelerators is a well-established modality where the dose rate and, therefore, the dose per pulse are very high. The constancy of the dosimetric parameters of the accelerator has to be checked daily. The aim of this work is to develop a phantom with embedded detectors to improve both accuracy and efficiency in the daily test of an IORT linac at the surgery room. Methods The developed phantom is manufactured with transparent polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), allocating 6 parallel-plate chambers: a central one to evaluate the on-axis beam output, another on-axis one placed at a fixed depth under the previous one to evaluate the energy constancy and four…

Insights into Kelvin probe force microscopy data of insulator-supported molecules

2015

We present a detailed analysis and understanding of Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) data for a system of point charges in a vacuum-dielectric tip-sample system. Explicit formulae describing the KPFM signal $\ensuremath{\Delta}V$ are derived for the two KPFM operation modes, namely amplitude modulation and frequency modulation (FM). The formulae allow for a physical interpretation of the resulting KPFM signal, reveal contributing parameters, and especially disclose an additive behavior. We numerically evaluate these equations and show exemplary KPFM slice data for a single point charge. The theoretical analysis is complemented by two-dimensional FM-KPFM maps obtained experimentally on 2…

Microwave-free vector magnetometry with nitrogen-vacancy centers along a single axis in diamond

2019

Sensing vector magnetic fields is critical to many applications in fundamental physics, bioimaging, and material science. Magnetic-field sensors exploiting nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers are particularly compelling as they offer high sensitivity and spatial resolution even at nanoscale. Achieving vector magnetometry has, however, often required applying microwaves sequentially or simultaneously, limiting the sensors' applications under cryogenic temperature. Here we propose and demonstrate a microwave-free vector magnetometer that simultaneously measures all Cartesian components of a magnetic field using NV ensembles in diamond. In particular, the present magnetometer leverages the level ant…

Validation of the Strain Assessment of a Phantom of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: Comparison of Results Obtained From Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Ste…

2018

Predicting aortic aneurysm ruptures is a complex problem that has been investigated by many research teams over several decades. Work on this issue is notably complex and involves both the mechanical behavior of the artery and the blood flow. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can provide measurements concerning the shape of an organ and the blood that flows through it. Measuring local distortion of the artery wall is the first essential factor to evaluate in a ruptured artery. This paper aims to demonstrate the feasibility of this measure using MRI on a phantom of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) with realistic shape. The aortic geometry is obtained from a series of cine-MR images and reco…
