Experimental control over soliton interaction in optical fiber by pre-shaped input field

2011

Interactions between femtosecond solitons in a nonlinear photonic-crystal fiber are of fundamental interest. But many practical applications would abound if solitons could be arbitrarily superposed into multiples in the fiber. Here, we numerically and experimentally demonstrate a first step towards this aim, the creation of a soliton pair with arbitrary relative phase, delay, and frequency throughout almost the entire output parameter space with the aid of a pre-shaped fiber input field.

Limits of ultra-high bit rate RZ data transmissions in terrestrial optical fiber systems

2006

We numerically study the limits of the terrestrial optical fiber systems as a function of the bit rate. In particular, we compare for 160-, 320- and 640-Gbit/s the limits of single channel and WDM configurations.

40 GHz pulse source based on cross-phase modulation-induced focusing in normally dispersive optical fibers.

2016

We theoretically and experimentally investigate the design of a high-repetition rate source delivering well-separated optical pulses due to the nonlinear compression of a dual-frequency beat signal within a cavity-less normally dispersive fiber-based setup. This system is well described by a set of two coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations for which the traditional normally dispersive defocusing regime is turned in a focusing temporal lens through a degenerated cross-phase modulation process (XPM). More precisely, the temporal compression of the initial beating is performed by the combined effects of normal dispersion and XPM-induced nonlinear phase shift provided by an intense beat signa…

Quadratic solitons in 2D nonlinear photonic crystals

2007

We report on the first observation of spatial solitons in a 2D nonlinear photonic crystal. The experiments were performed in an hexagonally poled LiNbO3 waveguide designed for second harmonic generation from ~1.55 micron.

Control of spontaneous emission of a single quantum emitter through a time-modulated photonic-band-gap environment

2017

We consider the spontaneous emission of a two-level quantum emitter, such as an atom or a quantum dot, in a modulated time-dependent environment with a photonic band gap. An example of such an environment is a dynamical photonic crystal or any other environment with a bandgap whose properties are modulated in time, in the effective mass approximation. After introducing our model of dynamical photonic crystal, we show that it allows new possibilities to control and tailor the physical features of the emitted radiation, specifically its frequency spectrum. In the weak coupling limit and in an adiabatic case, we obtain the emitted spectrum and we show the appearance of two lateral peaks due to…

Unidirectional reflection from an integrated "taiji" microresonator

2020

We study light transmission and reflection from an integrated microresonator device, formed by a circular microresonator coupled to a bus waveguide, with an embedded S-shaped additional crossover waveguide element that selectively couples counter-propagating modes in a propagation-direction-dependent way. The overall shape of the device resembles a "taiji"symbol, hence its name. While Lorentz reciprocity is preserved in transmission, the peculiar geometry allows us to exploit the non-Hermitian nature of the system to obtain high-contrast unidirectional reflection with negligible reflection for light incident in one direction and a significant reflection in the opposite direction.

Light self-confinement via second harmonic generation in a 2D nonlinear photonic crystal waveguide

2007

Spatial solitary waves induced by quadratic nonlinearities have been the subject of many theoretical and experimental investigations in the last decade, with extensive studies being devoted to soliton formation in 1D nonlinear photonic crystals (NPC) such as PPLN (periodically poled LiNbO3). Here we present results on a new class of (1 + 1)D spatial solitary waves, the first examples of quadratic self-confinement in a 2D NPC.

Reconfigurable RF waveform generation using optical incoherent sources

2008

An RF waveform generator operating with incoherent broadband light is successfully implemented. Complex RF ~10 GHz bandwidth waveforms are generated by means of incoherent wavelength-to-time mapping. Our technique can be scaled to the mm-wave range.
