(Table 1) Stable oxygen and carbon isotopic ratios of tree rings, and tree ring width of white spruce (Picea glauca), Ennadai Lake

2012

Stable isotope ratios from tree rings and peatland mosses have become important proxies of past climate variations. We here compare recent stable carbon and oxygen isotope ratios in cellulose of tree rings from white spruce (Picea glauca), growing near the arctic tree line; and cellulose of Sphagnum fuscum stems, growing in a hummock of a subarctic peatland, in west-central Canada. Results show that carbon isotopes in S. fuscum correlate significantly with July temperatures over the past ~20 yr. The oxygen isotopes correlate with both summer temperature and precipitation. Analyses of the tree-ring isotopes revealed summer temperatures to be the main controlling factor for carbon isotope var…

Extract information of polarization imaging from local matching stereo

2010

Since polarization of light was used in the field of computer vision, the research of polarization vision is rapidly growing. Polarization vision has been shown to simplify some important image understanding tasks that can be more difficult to be performed with intensity vision. Furthermore, it has computational efficiency because it only needs grayscale images and can be easily applied by a simple optical setup. Nowadays, we can find various types of polarization cameras in the market. However, they are very expensive. In our work, we will study and develop a low price polarization camera setup with parallel acquisition using a stereo system. This system requires only two general cameras e…

Adapted processing of catadioptric images using polarization imaging

2009

A non parametric method that defines a pixel neighborhood within catadioptric images is presented in this paper. It is based on an accurate modeling of the mirror shape by using polarization imaging. Unlike the most of current processing methods in the literature, this method is non-parametric and can deal with the deformation of catadioptric images. This paper demonstrates how an appropriate neighborhood can be derived from the polarization parameters by estimation of the degree of polarization and the angle of polarization which in return directly provide an adapted neighborhood of each pixel that can be used to perform image derivation, edge detection, interest point detection and namely…

Mapováni spinů povrchových a bulkových Rashba stavů v tenkých vrstvách feroelektrického α-GeTe(111)

2015

Rozbíjení inverzní symetrie ve fereeleRashba efekt; Fotoemisse; DFTktrickém polovodiči způsobuje děleni stavů, tzv Rashba efekt. V tomto článku ukazujeme kompletně mapování spinové polarizace těchto Rashba stavů za pomoci spinovo rozlišené fotoemisse. The breaking of bulk inversion symmetry in ferroelectric semiconductors causes a Rashba-type spin splitting of electronic bulk bands. This is shown by a comprehensive mapping of the spin polarization of the electronic bands in ferroelectric α- GeTe(111) films using a time-of-flight momentum microscope equipped with an imaging spin filter that enables a simultaneous measurement of more than 10 000 data points. The experiment reveals an opposite…

Polarizability and optical rotation calculated from the approximate coupled cluster singles and doubles CC2 linear response theory using cholesky dec…

2004

A new implementation of the approximate coupled cluster singles and doubles CC2 linear response model using Cholesky decomposition of the two-electron integrals is presented. Significantly reducing storage demands and computational effort without sacrificing accuracy compared to the conventional model, the algorithm is well suited for large-scale applications. Extensive basis set convergence studies are presented for the static and frequency-dependent electric dipole polarizability of benzene and C60, and for the optical rotation of CNOFH2 and (−)-trans-cyclooctene (TCO). The origin-dependence of the optical rotation is calculated and shown to persist for CC2 even at basis set convergence. …

Functional fixedness and functional reduction as common sense reasonings in chemical equilibrium and in geometry and polarity of molecules

2000

Many of the learning difficulties in the specific domain of chemistry are found not only in the ideas already possessed by students but in the strategic and procedural knowledge that is characteristic of everyday thinking. These defects in procedural knowledge have been described as functional fixedness and functional reduction. This article assesses the procedural difficulties of students (grade 12 and first and third year of university) based on common sense reasoning in two areas of chemistry: chemical equilibrium and geometry and polarity of molecules. In the first area, the theme of external factors affecting equilibria (temperature and concentration change) was selected because the ex…

Nonlinear polarization effects in optical fibers: polarization attraction and modulation instability [Invited]

2014

We review polarization stabilization techniques based on the polarization attraction effect in low-birefringence fibers. Polarization attraction or pulling may be based on cross-polarization modulation, on parametric amplification, and on Raman or Brillouin scattering. We also review methods for laser frequency conversion based on polarization modulation instabilities in low- and high-birefringence fibers, and photonic crystal fibers. Polarization instabilities in nonlinear fibers may also be exploited for sensing applications.

All-optical regeneration of polarization of a 40 Gbit/s return-to-zero telecommunication signal

2013

International audience; We report all-optical regeneration of the state of polarization of a 40 Gbit/s return-to-zero telecommunication signal. The device discussed here consists of a 6.2-km-long nonzero dispersion-shifted fiber, with low polarization mode dispersion, pumped from the output end by a backward propagating wave coming from either an external continuous source or a reflection of the signal. An initially scrambled signal acquires a degree of polarization close to 100% toward the polarization generator output. All-optical regeneration is confirmed by means of polarization and bit-error-rate measurements as well as real-time observation of the eye diagrams. We show that the physic…

Application of time domain induced polarization to the mapping of lithotypes in a landfill site

2012

A direct current (DC) resistivity and time domain induced polarization (TDIP) survey was undertaken at a decommissioned landfill site situated in Hørløkke, Denmark, for the purpose of mapping the waste deposits and to discriminate important geological units that control the hydrology of the surrounding area. It is known that both waste deposits and clay have clear signatures in TDIP data, making it possible to enhance the resolution of geological structures compared to DC surveys alone.

Four DC/TDIP profiles were carried out crossing the landfill, and another seven profiles in the surroundings provide a sufficiently dense coverage of the entire area. The whole dataset w…
